The Soviet Army doesn't get the credit it deserves for their impact against the German forces. Without their participation, the war would have taken a turn for the worst. I for one salute them.
Can you give a full reference to this? Also, to which unit this soldier belonged to? There were several Waffen-SS formations that operated in the Ukraine at the time (winter-spring 1944). A more precise date and location where these actions took place would be nice too.
Having read serial books on the eastern front, can't believe that a military which relied on quick movement, they totally screwed by lack of hard surface roads, and being underreported for cold weather, by cold I mean cold I live in MN southern half & we get cold but the cold is mild compared to Russian winter..No winter clothing issued,supply trains stretch beyond ability to deliver needed supplies.. They ( general staff) should have read about Napoleon's Russian campaign...
