Follow along each week as Dad & Chad take on a new adventure. Up first, building a Rans S21 Airplane from the ground up.
On this channel, you'll see content related to planes (their Rans S21 airplane), trains (Dad, a private pilot, is a retired Union Pacific Engineer who occasionally operates engines for the Grapevine Vintage Railroad and who is also currently battling cancer, after previously beating breast cancer in the early 2000s) & automobiles (Chad buys & sells vehicles for a living) and other adventures.
I said to myself.. where are they .. I see 134.3, then I see Bremond, Calvert and TX6. I will be starting my S-21 in July. I'm at Coulter Field. Currently fly a J3.
I was leaving coulter! lol My dad had his 172 there in the 80's. The old FBO is now just concrete bc it burned down. Lots of memories there. I'm actually about to fly there now. Still have family in CS. I was born there. I just filmed another guy up in Bridgeport that just started. I'd love to answer any questions you have.
Thanks Steve. You too! Nothing on time limits at 2700. I did find some literature from Continental on chts. I think I've heard you mention what I'm referring to. I would like to know what they like to see constant cruise rpm to live at.
Not sure if you guys still monitor this but I am curious how you are liking your panel and if you would recommend taking the same path you did with the avionics. Nice build, I pick my kit up next month.
What pitch on your WW prop? With 16deg I'm seeing about 200' as well with the Titan IO-340 180hp WW prop taildragger at about sea level and 55F. The same 16deg gives me 150mph, 2600rpm at 3000'
18 degrees or so right now but I'm only getting 2550 rpm out of it. I need to repitch. I'm getting about 135-140 true at 3000' msl and 50F at 2300 rpm. That's at 8gph. I can crank it up if I want to burn more fuel.
The irony is the bugs come off the ceramic much easier than the PPF on the Leading Edge. It’s softer and the bugs stick into it and bees will actually stain it yellow for a period of months. It helps abrasion from rain, ice and sand better, but I’m undecided if I would ever do it again.
Really nice! This is on my list too. Who did it and what did they charge (it's a lot of work!)? Also did you put the film on the leading edge? Hard to tell in the video.
Thanks! Expel liner on leading edges and under the doors was $900. Detail, Polish and Ceramic Coat (7-year) was $3,800. It seemed high but it took 2 guys about 15 hours. I'm very pleased with it. It stays cleaner longer now and it's very easy to clean. I have the guys contact info that did the Expel liner and Sapphire Auto Spa did the Ceramic Coat.
Thanks, I've been flying the rans a little over 20 hours by myself. I just get a cross country endorsement from my instructor and go! Hoping to get my checkride this month! I went up with my instructor this week and passed all the maneuvers on 1st try!
at 3:07 LOL, what can you do without your cameraman? I saw your other video going over Dan's S-21 plane; he nut plate the cowling for easy access to maintenance the engine. is it possible to nut plate the boot cowling so you have easy access to service these avionics? i guess the windshield is in the way.
Haha! You can't get to the boot cowling that way bc of the windshield. You can still access things thru the g3x's. Not as easy as some designs but doable.
thanks for capturing the tips from the experience builder and get under to get the back of panel shots. Avionics and wiring is like a Bermuda Triangle for the first time builder. Love to hear more from the experience builder's tips.
Yeah, it's an enigma. I'd sugggest hiring a good avionics shop to help. I went with pacific coast avionics. They help long after they have been paid. There is a lot of crap you aren't evening thinking about that you will need help with once the place is ready to fly.
Congratulations on the first flight. I also put paint protection film on the leading edge of my 21’s wings, horizontal and vertical, stab, wing struts, gear, legs, and front cowl. I also ceramic coated the plane. The PPF is great, but it’s kind of a double edged sword. I protects the paint from impact and abrasion but it’s softer and the bugs actually stick to it and are harder to remove then on the painted surface.
Congratulations!!! I've been following your channel and have used it as one of my guides for my build. First flight is huge... Thanks for sharing it with us. Hope to be in the air with you soon.
Awesome, thank you! Now we work on getting oil temps down and fine tuning the autopilot. Everyone has these problems so we will be documenting what we are doing to fix it!
Congratulations gentlemen!!! Such a great accomplishment. It’s a pleasure watching your progress. I’ve taken several of your thoughts and tips to heart on my build as well, thank you. Your paint job looks fantastic as well!
Congratulations you two! Been watching the channel for a year and it's so cool to see your plane flying! And doing it as a father and son is an unforgettable experience for you both.
Congratulations on the first flight! I've been eyeing the S21 to build for a while now thanks for sharing the build!! Did you consider the taildragger vs tricycle gear, I can't decide on which way to go. Your build looks great I hope yall get tons of enjoyment out of it!!
I reread your comment and noticed I didn't answer you question. We considered both and Dad has tw endorsement. I guess it depends on your mission and personal preference. The tw won for us. But again, the builder can change back and fourth with a minimal cost and time.
Did you need special authorization to have a second pilot on the initial flight? I had heard this could be done now, but wasn’t sure if anything special had to be done to make that legal.
The APP specifies the qualifications necessary for the additional pilot. Having the additional pilot onboard during Phase I must be specified in the Operating Limitations.
@@cubman2711 I was thinking there was some paperwork required to do this. I just read AC 90-116 and see that section 15 addresses this. The operating limitations are set by the DER during the airworthiness inspection, correct?
Nice plane. Know it all old dude is a pain in the ass. I am 65 and he is the best reason to never to go to a retirement village and to avoid listening to crap like this.
Congratulations!!! So exciting!! Question for you: what did you do for insurance transition training? I’m starting to think about it and worried the insurance company will require time in a trike S-21.
Thanks! Not sure if the hours. More than I want to count. Ordered kit at Oshkosh '19. Received kit June 28th 2020. Finished plane June 29th 2023. Took a longer to get a DAR out than we anticipated. Wanted a safety pilot as well so that took some time to line schedules up.
