i once convinced a cal trans lady to let me drive highway 49 from 89 Sattley to Downieville. i lied i said i was only going to Sierra City. it was a WHITEOUT BLIZZARD. i drove like 3 mph the whole way using Google Maps little blue dot to see where the road was going. well i finally got to Downieville. there was a pizza place open. luckily. it was already getting late cuz i had taken so long it musta been around 10 pm. well i had the best pizza of my life and played some ping pong. truth be told i had to go all the way to San Francisco that night. i dropped off a guy catching a flight to Costa Rica, didn't even offer to pay me a dime either. oh well. "good deeds don't go unpunished." [edit we had left Truckee that eve around 5 pm. got to Downieville by 10 pm. Got to Auburn around midnight / finally got to the bay area around 2 am. (on a usual day with no traffic a drive from Truckee to Bay Area is about 3-4 hours. it took us about 10)]
The backside of the lake is the best.. ive even heard a baby back there as we were packing up to head out all i heard was some splashing and crying and i was young so stupidly went to it but never seen anything and never touched the water.
Cool finds. I used to collect crinoid (cri-noid) segments in Oklahoma. I made jewelry from them to give away. I got a good laugh when DMO said he doesn't like worms with teeth. Thanks for posting.
A local friend in his 80's took me up there. Unfortunately, he fell his first step out of the truck. He still wanted to drive me around but wasn't up for much walking. After we saw fresh bear tracks, he was ready to leave. LoL
I love Frenchmans Lake! Sadly, the camera doesnt do the rose quartz justice colorwise and show the beautiful lilac color. Also, they arent joking about the mosquitos at Little Last Chance creek! They swarm you and get in your face! I was fishing there and ran to my car for repellent. When i opened the trunk, dozens of the little bloodsuckers got into my trunk and car. It was like a swarm of bees the way they chased me to the car. There was literally a cloud of the little bastards! We were in pretty bad shape with itchy bites for days after. Word to the wise, put repellant on early and re-apply frequently if you go there!!!
Great town was here in Aug 2019 and camped out back Walt sure has some story's.p.s. Heard a story the reason the buildings are not painted is because it is aways so windy that the paint drys before you can put it on 😟Thank you for the Explore ⛏️💣🇺🇸🤔
Three of us were backpacking and went fishing there in the early '70s and were approached by two Native Americans on horseback with Cowboy hats and rifles and told us to leave, that we were on the reservation. So we said sorry and left.
Came across your page love it very nice. I'm into all kinds of things in Nevada, paranormal, native American stories, etc. i also do earthquake content research forecasts updates. And true needles active. And also water babies. Never go in the evening or night into pyramid lake. Greetings from Reno, Sparks Nevada. Also walker lane fault. Might be the new San Andreas fault in the future where can be Tigger new large Earthquakes who knows. Another thing heard it here first online: Lake Tahoe and pyramid lake is connected as well with a secret underground tunnel passage. Lastly Walker lake has underground tunnels connected to Area 51, Las Vegas, Reno and Pacific Ocean. Can find me on all platforms under Casimiro Media Productions. Im also part of a independent weather team. United National Weather Team. Do y'all have social media pages ?.
Hello from northern California! A friend of mine and I visited Pyramid Lake on the way to Black Rock desert. What an interesting place! I love rock hounding, and I had so much fun rock hounding in Nevada. Thanks for sharing all of the information with us. Bright Blessings & Many Smiles!

I lived there at age 10 in 1945 and got to ride on the fire engine at the end of ww2. I have commented on three other explorations of Austin. First pics of the old mill. We used to shoot bats with bb guns on the ceiling of the mill. I lived there from 44-48. My dad was Forest Ranger. Bert Acre was Justice of Peace his wife Millie was County Clerk and they played for the dances in the Hotel Austin. Bert on sax and drums and Millie on piano. My dad Q Hansen sat in on the piano occasionally and my mom sang a few songs. I was a tourist there in around 3016. Talked to Pancho Williams. His older brother Bubby was out of town. Good memories of sledding in the winter. We would hook up with the Hiskey Stage that had chains and get towed to the summit and coast all the way back to town at night. They had a town bob sled that held 20. Stan Mastretti had the Austin Garage, Shell and Leroy Cassidy had the Chevron. I worked there for $2 a day got my SS card. I cleaned restrooms, grease rach, tools and oil bath air cleaners. There were four bars, the Town Pump, Golden Saloon, (Bill Williams) Silver Dollar (Frank Aldape) and the International. I saw an article in National Geographic around 1965 about Austin and Cowboys. Gus Stressly, Walter and Henry Schmidtlein were ranchers in Smokey Valley and good friends. Altha Schmidtlein, Georgia Reed, Beverly Miles, John and Virginia Malloy, Gary Gandolfo. Peter Dory, Glen Dory, and Joy Vigus were names of schoolmates I remember. David Hansen
Your footage is 2 years out of date you frauds . You harm our town when you pull this shit. I don’t care about you needing likes and subscribes. Stay honest
Hi Guys, old mining town of Buel use to be on my little place in NE Nevada near the Utah border. You ever come over this way, give a yell. I'll give you the "tour" in my late middle aged Ranger. Lots of old history and mines. Take care.
