This channel is dedicated to remembering the critically praised Space: Above and Beyond series, airing for only 1 season from 1995 to 1996, without any word from Fox why it was disbanded.
The show won 3 primetime Emmys during that season and was nominated for several more. Despite this fact and the viewer ratings, 20th Century Fox still cancelled the show after 24 episodes.
Speculations say that the mammoth hit Babylon 5, despite it's inferior cast, production and scripts, muscled S:AAB off the air.
Glen morgan & James Wong (X-Files), the producers of Space: Above and Beyond haven't made statements to indicate a reason for Fox's abandon of the franchise.
However, not all is dark. A DVD box set of the entire series is now available from retailers in the US.
Totally underrated series! Cut before its time! ☹️😒 Whereas the grossly overrated RDM Galactica (which was never much of a reimagining of Battlestar Galactica - appropriated the title and character names) completely ripped off Space A&B(!!) 🤬😤👎 and was allowed to go one for several seasons (all with diminishing returns) and unwanted spinoffs (like Caprica💩)!? ⁉️🤔🤷♂️
Recuerdo esta serie juvenil espacial, la dieron en MEGA Pero tuvo un par de temporadas y la finiquitaron..... Los '90 solo intentaron continuar con copias de Galactica y Star War
they killed so many extras and main cast by the end of the show that it was practically another show...ending sucked a bit. Interesting one time watch.
Doubt that'll never happen now as the original show was a FOX production and FOX is now owned by Disney. And if there's one thing Disney are known for it's not giving a shit about any of the properties it owns that aren't deemed "successful".
I can personally vouch that this show aired in 1995. Why am I so certain? Because I remember very vividly as a child that I was playing outside one day and found a 1995 decal sticker for a license place, and I gave it to my mom because our car's tags had expired and we didn't have the money to renew them, and I used to watch this show w/ my mom and her then boyfriend.
Interesting concept of a show, I believe I watched most episodes as a kid, but looking back, why in the hell would they use the same marines as both pilots and front line soldiers? It would be like having the cook serve part time as a nuclear engineer.
Prob my fave show! So many good lines, fantastic writing, barely a moment of bad acting, nothing corny, nothing that feels like American propaganda (90% of todays shows especially all the police, CIA, and other secret services/agent shows - complete and utter trash and US propaganda), great chemistry between all characters, great camera work and directing style, every episode is well done, and did I mention many memorable lines (especially from Hawkes and McQueen)? Noththing is over dramatised but that actually makes you feel more for the characters. Everything about Space: Above and Beyond is well done and that's why it's one of the only shows (especially recently) I can watch while actually caring and without cringing.
Except for the "Stay with the dead" episode...*shudders* but otherwise I agree, this show was great and showed real potential but like many potentially great things it was ruined by various outside sources...
I remember seeing the longer intro when I watched this on the Space channel (in Canada). I picked up the DVD set and was a bit disappointed they only use the short intro. :(
Oh wow. I remember watching this show in 1996 and never saw it again. Wondered whatever happened to it cause it was good. Didn't even remember what the show was called, but i did remember the "Chigs" so I just looked it up on google and here I am. Dam I wish it were 1996 still.
3:16 PM 3/10/2014 Listen to the second intro. Its a synonym. WE DID THIS A LONG TIME AGO TO HUMANS. We bred humans to fight wars, that was there task in life. Back in the day each race had a task in life. That's how we setup the system. Blacks were forced to work in the mines, they knew that was there task in life too. Aryans got bred for warfare and fight wars around the world for the King/Emperor. Yes this is real. Invitros are artificial humans, they are ARYANs. Even the Kings of Atlantis were Aryan. ;)
Takes me back to the mid-1990's and working the late night 3rd shift.I would have this recorded on vhs and watch this show when I get home sometime after 6 am when the sun is rising up.
I have yet to find anything that compares to Babylon 5 - with its incredible writing and comedy - for to include comedy as well as brilliant storylines - many of these sci fi series seem to miss the comedy and that is a shame. Babylon 5 wins hands down.
You mean you cannot find anything on televison to compare Babylon 5? Quite right. I tried really hard to watch Battlestar Galatica.....but the series kinda went nuts when Starbuck reappeared out of the blue in the season finale. I stopped watching after that. It's just......too dark. I don't mind characters having to go through dark times that is expected. But you have to have some comedy in it....even if it's dry humor it's still welcome. JMS is stating that they are going to reboot the series and he will make it one way or the other. Google it.
Yes its true. When I was a kid I was always watching this when it was on. I cant believe Fox ended this tv series. If they bring it back which I doubt. They already know what to put in it for a story. Just make it where West is a squad leader now and new events happened like earth is messed up internally and someone in his squad isn't really human at all. Part Alien and part human and the Govt. knew it too. He was special and helped beat the odds against what was left of the aliens.
I think this is one of the few TV series from the early 90's in which the special effects didn't age terribly. I would go for a sequel rather than a remake.
True, I feel as if a remake would cheapen the original by attempting to overwrite it. In a direct comparison, the history of Hollywood remakes suggests a high chance of failure. Plus, given how the series ended there is arguably a lot of potential to continue the story with some fresh faces.
@Mert Dekor, unfortunately the special effects would look crappy on a HDTV set: they were made by the same company that did the effects on _Babylon 5_ , IIRC (and the video was done two stops on the register, which is why initially it didn't look like CGI.)
I remember this series and was hooked but it was difficult to catch. They kept changing the times of showing it. Not many people remember it. Drove me nuts the enemy was so elusive and mysterious, near impossible to catch. They had some strange land mine that gave off a lot of light and this did something to humans, don't remember what. Lot of fire fights on dark planets and moons and such.
