this was the last movie I ever watched with my mother before she died so it will always have a special place in my heart she was a WW2 war bride and didn't speak Spanish Dad was from Texas, so I grew up speaking all 3 the movie is so much better if you understand all 3 languages spoken there are so many jokes in each language--kudos to the writer(s)!!!
Kids are too young to understand but the adults should have known better than to ridicule him! Parents need to teach their children compassion in this world!
I saw this wonderful movie as a pre -teen when it first came out in 1963, and I just loved it, as I did all his films ! I'm FINALLY getting a copy of it on DVD - can't WAIT to enjoy this beautiful, gem of a movie again, and again - AMEN ! :) And RIP, Sidney. Gone, but never forgotten, by this old movie fan of yours. :)
If only John Merrick knew that one day he would be famous worldwide. And a movie would be made about his life. Maybe it would have eased his pain a tiny bit.
Subtle yet ...all encompassing proclamation and devotion to the best and brightest of Humans....LORD JESUS. HE left the greatest..most comfortable kingdom...to exist here with us...to be spit on, disrespected, and tortured and murdererd...for you and l. Praises and honor to my SAVIOUR. Amen? Amen!😮
Hannibal Lectors true origin story of how he actually became a serial killer / cannibal 😂 If i was Merrick , i honestly wouldn't want anyone else on earth coming to my rescue & letting me cry on their shoulder more then Hannibal Lector himself especially with his wisdom & open heart for vulnerable & good hearted ppl because Hannibal actually had morals regardless of his extremely evil deeds he only hated & fed on rude ppl so this is actually the perfect person to come up & give Merrick a damn hug tbh because u know he's going to kill all of them later on off camera & eat them just for Merrick ❤ Merrick was definitely not a animal but Dr. Lector sure was 😂
Mr. Poitier is NOT singing! Ha. The voice you’re hearing is actually Jester Hairston the writer of the song. He’s best known as “Rolly Forbes” on the TV sitcom “Amen”.
It wasn't Deborah Kerr singing in the movie " The King and I" either, but it doesn't matter. SHE was the best for the acting role, and was totally believable, as Sidney is here. You don't get an Oscar - which he did, for this movie - for doing a poor acting job ! The fact 'he didn't sing this song' is a very minor detail.
this film was so freakin sad and the reason his head is big is because he has deformaties which effects his speech btw this was a true story in london back in 1929
Can someone please tell me if I have this right about this part of the movie??? It looks to me like when the superior realizes that he's leaving that she feels bad about it or is upset about it?
This IS the final scene of the movie, in fact. I'd say she - unlike the other nuns - is well aware that he's leaving, and this important segment of her life is over, BUT she is very thankful he came into their lives, helped them - overall - and helped build that chapel for them ! :)
Hi Jennifer. Basically she realizes he is leaving and comes to the realization she took him for granted. The job may be done, however she has become accustomed to his presence. She went from a hard ironed nun to one that actually feels something.
I cry for how cruel humanity can be to those we deem "lesser" than ourselves. Every living being is worthy of loving, of dignity, of respect and understanding.
This movie played on HBO when I was 7 years old. I really believe it taught me about compassion and kindness. I cried when I watched it then and I still tear-up when I watch these scenes. and I’m 51 now. The power of great filmmaking. ❤️
My mom may she rest in peace got me hooked on all things Sidney Poitier especially this movie. Here was this journeyman stopping for water and ended up getting rooked by a Mother Superior to build a Chapel. It was a funny and sweet movie about humbling yourself before God and serving Him. Tubi TV has this currently on its platform along with several other Poitier classics!
Born almost 20 years after this movie was made. They don't make them like this anymore. What a perfect ending. I love how he just slips away, he does not want a pat on the back or anything.
