Well to play devil's advocate...there is some colorism in the MJ fan community. Those younger non-black "fans" that only acknowledge him from the BAD era and on.

It's as he said several times over... it's not something he could help... People had vitiligo before he was born, and many have since he died... why did the press make it such an issue with MJ? His skin tone was nothing to do with his music anyway... If MJ had turned green, I'd still have bought his CDs!
If anything, him becoming lighter affected his career negatively, especially in the Black community, but he still managed to break records and be the biggest star in the world.
He already became a global phenomenon during Thriller I feel like his vitiligo negatively affected his other albums they were still successful tho nonetheless that lady barely watched any MJ videos
