Hello, I'm Matthew Encina. I'm a creative director, designer, and educator. I create content about living by design, and I share how that manifests in different parts of my life- home, work, and habits.
I’m a Filipino-American, born and raised in Los Angeles, and I've been a creative professional for over 20 years- directing, designing, and telling stories for some pretty awesome clients. I love to rock climb, breakdance, play video games, drink coffee, and nerd out on mechanical keyboards and comic books.

☕ Watching you in calming manner state while go through all the process in many videos. So, curios about what is generally/typically you do to help you keep going and be in better state with yourself. (eg. Update detailed routine, How to prepare being state, Why you keep going with work, How to maintain those mindset, etc.) Very inspired by your work a lot. It's valuable. ✨
@@fluqefluqe ☕️ thank you. In general I’m very excited and grateful to show up to work. I do my best not to take on too many projects and just focus on a few things to do them well. I have authorship and am challenged constantly to learn new things. All of this adds up to me being very engaged with the project.
@@MatthewEncina I think ‘engaged’ is prompt me to reflect about this word more. Also really love your attitude to show up and how you balance all the things. Thank you for reply back. 🙏✨
@@MatthewEncina nice, I didn’t know that. We use them in the research lab in high tech electronics applications, they’re super high quality so I guess it makes sense. Very cool video!
@matthewencina thanks for sharing this. I came across your video to get inspiration to build my coffee bar. Is there anything you wouldve changed to the millwork/cabinet having used it for a year now? I would also like to use an Ikea cabinet to save cost but after adding wheels and a work top, the height would be uncomfortable for me to make coffee on.
@@kkwkamm it’s held up very well for me. Granted I don’t move it around a lot. Only every couple of weeks for cleaning. The only thing I would change is to use wheels/casters that have more than one mounting point (3-4 screws) for better stability. For my height it works well. I would measure the height of your waist and use that as a reference point for standing.
what an absolutely gorgeous studio. This video was so calming to watch. Your voice is poetic and the way you filmed the video was so relaxing. Thank you !!!!!!
I would like advice on pantone selection when it comes to your keycaps. What pantone guide are you using to select your colors? From what I see it's very different from my pantone guide set which is the solid coated and uncoated. Any advise on selection of colors?
@@kinokun6553 I’m using the FHI catalog, but you can use any. Just make sure whatever you use there are plastic swatches available to match to. That will be the closest representation of what the keycaps will look like.
⚠️⚠️⚠️Thank you so much for posting this!!! I’m in the beginning process of developing a product to launch & not having much experience this definitely came in handy!!! ⚠️⚠️⚠️
Thank you for the informative video! My name is Varun and I am a fashion accessories manufacturer from India. I specialize in products such as backpack pins, keychains, brooches, fridge magnets, and personalized gifts. I am seeking advice on how to think creatively when designing my products and how to validate the quality of my ideas. Additionally, I would appreciate recommendations for books on product-market fit. I look forward to your insights. Thank you for your time.
Bro changed a few colors here and there and acts like this is a revolutionary idea 💀. But i guess this is genius marketing which is what this video is about idk if i should be impressed by this or not.
One thing im struggling is the "whats the point" part. I had videos where i knew 100% they will work (and they did) but how do i know if my point is a legit one or just some superficial answer i give myself to continue the process?
The final out come is visually appealing, exactly what you would expect of a product designer. However it’s just a boring overpriced piece of equipment that takes up desk space and doesn’t really solve any problems. The design process was great but I feel like you are going in the wrong direction
Been watching lots of your videos recently as I design my desk setup! I also have a polycarbonate Mode Envoy. Where can I buy the cable you use for your Envoy?
In the first 5 minutes, I was very impressed with the aesthetics and your filming. However, as the video continued, I realized that the whole process is designed to make viewers think you're creating an impressive, creative design. In reality, you're just adding small, generic touches to universally standard parts-adding some colors here, some layers there-to give a false impression that you designed the entire keyboard from scratch, including new switches, etc. Even with this minimal generic design, your cut can reach 30% for practically nothing. This video is a great example of how the custom keyboard industry is just a big scam and doesn't deserve these insane prices
@@tomcat7928 not every new product needs to be redesigned from the ground up. Many products that exist today use already existing parts or are variants/iterations of previous products. In many cases it wouldn’t make sense to design everything from scratch. If you watch some of my other product design videos, you can see other projects designed from earlier stages. Everything has a place.
Who needs meditation or yoga. Watching your videos is like a calming lotion for my brain. Your voice, shots, story (and obviously the space) is so relaxing to experience. I am at peace 🧘.
I have done some steps of this process separately before. Now, watching this video and seeing the whole process, a realization that this might be the thing I can do all day for the rest of my life hit me hard. Thank you for the content!
Amazing video! When it comes to filming, did you plan all of your shots in advance before you started the actual construction portions? I am assuming so because for videos like this you have one chance to get the shot for some of these scenes because your are putting pieces together and there is no return. Can you share some insights on how you go about filming for a video like this that involves putting together something please.

Genuine question. How did you start out? How did you get to this point in your career where you can contact multiple people that work with different things
@@boxdacelestial2810 I have 20 years of experience in the creative field and I’ve spent a good amount of time in the keyboard hobby. This gives me a good approach to things and genuine relationships to tap into. Check out my intro video on my channel to get the lowdown on my background.
@@MatthewEncina It was my first thought the moment I saw those holes, but because I don't have experience I decided that its not a viable solution if you didn't used it, but later in the video you painted it. it will add at least one step to the manufacturing process so maybe that is why manufacturers told you its impossible, they don't like changes that cost them money or require them to think "outside the process"...
Another option can be to use custom font that will not have closed shape characters (if its even possible) Or make the character transparent to make it backlit
Awesome and informative video. Weird question...I notice you seem to type the same length of time when testing the keyboard sound at the end. What are you typing? Is it the same thing every time?
do you verify market demand before creating your ideas into products? i haven't seen this in any of your videos, so i'm very interested into what extent you do this before. Or is it because of your already-built audience that this step isn't as necessary?
Wherever possible I use related/comparable sales data when available to inform decisions. The rest is just instinct/anecdotal based on studying the niche and trends. Having an audience helps of course, but you still have to know what direction is worth pursuing.
@@marcospicciani61 The PCB supports other layouts if you solder it. You need the appropriate keycaps to match an ISO Italian layout. You can see PCB layout support on the images here: modedesigns.com/collections/encore-extras/products/envoy-pcb
@@Mkrabs it don’t think it would work, cause the clear would still be on top of the legend. The clear needs a channel to get around the legend regardless. Currently the channels “holes” are already on the bottom of the keycap injected through to the top.
