Welcome, this is my channel where I share my passion for Reptiles. I have been keeping reptiles and other pets for most of my life. I love the outdoors and nature itself. This channel is a window into the most enjoyable part of my life dealing with the creatures I enjoy keeping.
I keep Dubias, Red Runner roaches and just broke into breeding grasshoppers for my Ackie. They just started laying so fingers crossed they thrive. He loves the Red runners, but we alternate prey randomly to keep from getting hooked on one thing. Red runners are fantastic cause they breed like mad.
Great video and excellent commentary 💯 You have a great voice, not sure if you have ever considered podcasting or radio but you'd be great at it...just saying
I had some choya branches I was storing outside and used them for my lizard's enclosure, I washed them and put them in with no issue. 3 days later I see my lizard really interested in the branches, which was cool, but then a gecko ran out and he ate it before I could get it and he ran off with it.... He seems fine right now, but is he ok to eat those?
It's so cool. Thinking about taking care of an ackie. I usually study up on things like those for a long time before actually doing it. Where would i look to get one? I like going through reputable breeders for my tarantulas. Id like to shop around while i learn about them
@Scales13 wow... the response time was insane lol. I'm showing your video to my girl, n you're already responding. You're actually the second person to mention rareerthinc to me. I'm so intrigued by this animal
@Scales13 Yeah, I saw that.. active and fun to feed can really lead to an unhealthy pet. I appreciate the advice and video.. Great video.. I'll let you know if I get one.
they also need a minimum 4'x2'x18" FRONT opening enclosures with proper UBV and 4" of substrate to burrow in. You should have had this all in place and before you got Panther. Do better.
Great video!!! Love the shout out of grasshoppers and the importance of including them in the diet!!! One thing to add with roaches is that roaches do carry a lot of uric acid in their fat pads in addition to protein. I agree- size and amount should be regulated. Another thing of note with crickets is they are high in purines as well, but less uric acid than roaches. The awesome thing about crickets is we know more about their gut physiology than any other feeder insect, so we know how to gut load them effectively Black soldier fly larvae also have a higher calcium:phosphorous level than most insects I avoid waxworms and super worms due to the fat content.
I built a very large pvc enclosure and it's a bio active set up and he absolutely loves it he has about 6 inches of substrate and I have a dry side and a wet side I use evb and he has live plants and bugs that clean up his cage for him I try my best to spoil him as much as I can atleast but I def recommend if ya have one a pvc enclosure is the way to go keeping g humidity is super easy with this type set up
How do your geckos not get fat on 8 mealworms couple times per week? I have been feeding mine 4 - 5 mealworms every 4 days for a while, because I did not have enough dubias and they all got quite thick tails and on were in the verge of getting too fat.
Haha this is a great little video ! It’s always great to give these guys plenty of exercise ! & it’s fun to watch them run around lol. I have a couple monitors myself…I’ve always wanted a red Ackie…that’s next on my list ! I really like how you have the enclosure set up with different high/low levels. Great idea ! 🦎🤙🏻
I have a juvenile and they said to feed him every day should I do that or every other day what would ya suggest he's prob few months old maybe 3 or 4 months about 6 to 8 inches long
@@Scales13 i had taken my colony from 20 to about 300, then had a massive die-off. was never able to get them started again. Was working with S. Nitens. My females turned turquoise lol and then went super soft and died
@@Scales13 they’re crazy. I had success with spraying them everyday and keeping them in wooden enclosures with only 2 sides screen. Halogen on 24/7. I want to try them again now
I really like your video, this information is very important. I was wondering if you know how much a good weight for a young adult Ackie should be? My Ackie is about 140g and probably 1.5-2 years old, I have seen a lot of varying suggestions, so I’m not sure if his weight is ok, he doesn’t look to skinny or fat.
After researching over 2 months I came to a conclusion that we currently don't have enough info on Savanah to captive raise properly, so gave up on getting one. I wish him/her best of luck with long(er) and happy life!
A lot of great points! Something I think that would help with portion control is having a set quantifiable amount. Studies of wild Ackies show they have a fresh food consumption rate of 13.2g/kg/day, meaning that a 100g Ackie only needs 1.32 grams of food per day. I think the important thing looking at wild diets is seeing the proportion of which insects make up the diet, so we can replicate protein levels that the animal is evolved to digest and absorb
Very true, I think the only obstacle they're is factoring in the amount of movement a wild has per day vs. a Captive specimen, which of course offsets the calorie load the animal can handle. If we factor that into the equation, I think we can start to nail down better feeding regiments for adults.
@@Scales13 regardless of differences between wild and captive individuals, the 13.2g/kg/day serves a benchmark to help guide how much is appropriate for the species. I think another thing to take into account is that monitors are not constantly on the move. Studies show monitors have similar metabolic rates to other lizards, so monitors shouldn’t be treated differently energy demand wise as other lizards in similar environments. I have a paper on gout in the responsible herpetoculture journal that details a lot of this further too!
@ericloskamp2110 True to the point. I'm just saying an animal that doesn't get the chance to roam at it's leasure vs an animal in a box will defently show a huge difference in activity, I'm not saying that energy consumption based on the animals biology is any different, but more or less how much energy the animal has a chance to consume. I do agree with your point that people forget that monitors are also just lizards and share a similar metabolic rate with other ectotherms.
@@Scales13 agree with those points- I wanted to add the fresh food consumption rate to the comments of your video to add supplemental information- awesome content as usual!
Great color. That is the point of this series to given keepers the chance to share info for the benefit of newer keepers and the welfare of the animals they're keeping. Excellent hope to hear from you again!
