How *EXACTLY* did you remove the keyboard ribbon cable? I couldn't see from the video and there's zero documentation on these machines anywhere on the Internet. Even more so for my model, the PCG-Z505-LS. It has a Windows ME sticker on it so it must have been made around the turn of the millennium, but besides that I know nothing.
My deck is a technics RS-B40 and obviously was poorly serviced. I got ome of my tapes chewed up a bit, not like on this video. Do you think it can still be ok with the sound?
if you lower the tape from the side sticks inside the cassette, then you would reduce the detonation coefficient, there would be less friction, a lower indicator
Great job! I came here trying to understand what would be required to restore my old 660ZX, and what ive seen is that I need to find someone as skilled as you-! I'm probably able to remove the transport section, but too much more involved without a understanding what happened during your fast vid sections....Hopefully I can find some good tape player repair closer by- well done Juliano!
I recently acquired one of these ultrabooks (model PCG-N505SN to be precise) and I would to share some thoughts. First of all, mine only has 96MB od RAM (both RAM extensions slot populated), the rest is pretty much the same, except of hard drive, that someone replaced with 30GB model. Mine only needs 45s to fully start, which is probably due to faster HDD, but to be honest I don't use full Sony software suite, as I found most of it useless. Thing I find most impressive is the LCD TFT screen - XGA in 10,4" was quite a thing. Also hinges are perfect for 23 year old hardware. Overall quality of this thing is truly amazing - I wish modern laptops were made that thoroughly. Nothing is broken and case did not become britle. You are lucky to have all accessories nad software - I had none (at first not even power supply), so I had to be creative with data transfer methods - now I use USB port and flash drives. Only bad thing is battery - 3 cells and 2200mAh is really not enough. Luckilly, the internal electronics of the battery does not lock when cells are disconnected, so I could replace all cells with new ones. Too bad it works no more than 90 minutes on battery with brightness dimmed halfway down. Best regards from Poland.
Love your technics, is beautiful when is silver color. just a quick question, I bought a m228s series works great using tape. but when I switch to dbx disc the sound is fading in and out. The way my setup is, technics lp120 -> m228x -> Sony amplifier. Do you know the reason why is this happening?
Nakamichi uses lots of cheap plastic gears and parts. Azimuth adjustment is a gimmick to compensate for poor tape transport tolerances and bad design heads. The best tape machines in the world like Revox, Studer, Nagra, Stellavox, Otari don't use azimuth adjustment because it's not required. Every tape machine ever used in mastering and mixdowns never used azimuth adjustment. Nakamichi and japaness tape machine is toys

Hi Juliano. I just went after the transport on my 682ZX. Original owner but in storage for years and idler wheel and belts needed replacing. This was invaluable - thank you! Question. After re-assembly the flywheels seem to be producing a little friction slowing down playback. That or the reel motor needs lube or replacing. I didn't notice the quick spot of lube you applied to the flywheels - any recommendations? Basic 3-IN-1? Thanks so much.
I have a PCG-N505VX, which I believe is nearly identical (only a PII-333 MHz and 6 GB hardisk). I managed to upgrade the hardisk to a 40 GB and install a dual-boot Windows 98 and XP, but stuck with 64 MB of RAM as it uses proprietary memory. For those interested, the Yamaha YMF-744B sound chip offers a hardware OPL3 (FM synth), hardware XG (wavetable synth) and legacy SoundBlaster 16/pure DOS support! I've been running MS-DOS games on mine from the 90's. The only disappointing thing is its built-in speaker is heavily distorted unless set to extremely low volume (maybe it's broken?) so I need to use external speakers. It also needs a new main and clock battery, both are long dead.
I remember when this computer came out. It was a technological marvel that was out of reach for most people. Thank you for sharing this tear down and mod!
