Oh ye. Some interesting choices but literally a dip of the toe. Arch Enemy have had 3 vocalists: Johan Liiva, Angela Gossow and Alissa White-Gluz. As far as vocals go, the females do trump Johan but i do like the albums he features on. Michael Arnott founded the band and one of his former bands should 100% feature if you ever get around to English metal...Carcass. At the Gates' Slaughter of the Soul is one of the all time great albums. Essentially the blueprint for the metalcore that emerged in the late 90s into early 00s (Shadows Fall, Darkest Hour, Unearth, Killswitch Engag, Trivium). I assume you're going to make your way through continental European bands but eventually you may arrive in Britain and Ireland. When you do i recommend splitting it up into Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland (the whole island). And i would try digging beyond the obvious choices (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Bring Me The Horizon, Bullet for My Valentine), a lot of which I'm assuming you've already heard. Instead I'd recommend acts like: Napalm Death (eng) Electric Wizzard (eng) Paradise Lost (eng) Carcass (eng) Akercocke (eng) Raging speedhorn (eng) Anaal Nathrakh (eng) Bossk (eng) Bolt Thrower (eng) Svakbard (eng) Alestorm (sco) Saor (sco) Bleed from within (sco) Hellripper (sco) Party Cannon (sco) Budgie (wal) Venom Prison (wal but with german vocalist) Brutality will prevail (wal) Primordial (ire) Mael Mordha (ire) Gama Bomb (ire) Cruachan (ire) Altar of plagues (ire) God is an astronaut (ire) And so i watch you from afar (ire) [Ps those last 2 are more post-rock/experimental rock but i think those types of genres can have a decent crossover with metal)
My goodness thank you so much for all of these! Great idea splitting up the other EU countries and Ireland 🙌 Wow didn’t know that about Arch Enemy and At the Gates, how cool! Man I love At the Gates…so good. Far out the more you know hey, I do know Carcass but didn’t know the connection, it all makes sense now! Thanks so very much for all your recommendations I’ll work through them for future vids 🖤
Interesting take on Cenotaphe reminding you of Motorhead. It's not what I would've thought but that sound should dominate your inevitable video on Norwegian metal.
I must admit I thought about what I had said about them sounding like Motörhead- maybe that wasn’t the best example, some small similarities maybe but I’m sure there’s a better reference I could have used haha
@@Spangelaa a lot of bands are heavily influenced by Motorhead so it's not like it isn't in some way applicable. It's just that the sound follows 20+ years of development and in-between stages until you get to the likes of Cenotaphe. Motorhead added real speed and aggression to metal/rock from the late 70s on and those hallmarks become so popular in the extreme forms of metal because of them.
@@mjwoodroff8446 in your opinion is there a band that Cenotaphe sounds like? Yes to everything you mentioned about Motörhead, love their aggressive heavy sound that paved the way for many. My dad lived in the same area as Lemmy at one stage and saw him all the time, he even offered my dad his crusty greasy sunglasses 🤣 my dad politely declined but I wish he would have said yes!
@@Spangelaa Mayhem (Freezing Moon), Darkthrone (Transylvanian Hunger), Enslaved (Fenris). Basically most black metal that emerged from Norway in the early 90s. Other Norwegian bands: Ulver (anything from Bergtatt because they go through crazy evolution in their later years, which you can check out after) Emperor Ihsahn (a former member of Emperor) Immortal Abbath (a former member of immortal) Dimmu Borgir Kvelertak Borknagar Leprous Windir
There is also Burzum but you may choose to avoid it. Personally I've only listened to Filosofem by Burzum and it's fine but the man behind Burzum, Varg Vikernes, is extremely controversial (imprisonment for murder and church burnings, extreme right-wing views). Not that some of the other Norwegian bands aren't controversial; Mayhem (of which Varg was briefly a part of), Emperor. In fact, just check out the history of the above listed bands/second wave Norwegian Black Metal and if there are any controversies that put you off listening to the music then fair enough. You may want to do this full stop going forward because people will list anything they like and some of it may have controversial backgrounds. At least it would then be your choice.

As a german, when i think of swedish metal, i think of italy. Because that's where Nanowar of Steel are from and they did "Norwegian Raggaeton" and Norway, Sweden, thats basically the same. The song is a banger, check it out.
Good selection, but you should probably do more videos with Swedish metal, because man, did you just slightly dip your toe in. Sweden has had a huuuuge metal scene for over 40 years and there are so many good ones not mentioned here. Many more of grander international fame too, of course.
I thought this must be the case after reviewing a few Finnish bands I’m like there has to be the same level of metal enthusiasm in Sweden 😆 if you have any recommendations feel free to let me know! Thanks ☺️
The languages share a lot of vocabulary which shouldn't be strange considering historical trade and cultural exchange. Pronounciation branched off a long time ago though. 😅
That makes sense! Yeah I feel like there are maybe less differences prononciation wise between English and Swedish and English and Finnish maybe? It seems like quite a bit of Swedish is said how it’s spelled? I dunno I could be making that up haha 🙃
A fun couple of videos! The Finnish bands I've seen live so far are Lordi, Turmion Kätilöt, Beast in Black, and Nightwish (who are my favourite band). If you like folk metal at all, do add Korpiklaani to your list - they are very fun, usually quite lighthearted though occasionally hitting you in the feels.
PLEASE react to Turmion kätilöt if you have not already i would recommend the songs sikiö, teurastaja, tirehtööri, pirun nyrkki, faster than god. (In no particular order) They're all great songs
You really should have tried some other song from Nightwish, like "An Ocean Of Strange Islands" from the new album:) Although in general their best stuff can be heard at Wacken 2013 live concert ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I6iwrJjzkIY.html But yeah Nightwish has only few songs with growling with the Dutch singer Floor, e.g. "Yours is an Empty Hope" (before her none), their heaviest songs otherwise are probably "Romanticide" and "Master Passion Greed". @@stimolus yo I addressed this in my most recent video of Finnish Metal Bands 😅 got a lot of recommendations some that you listed too I listened to wintersun and nightwish and amporphis in the new video 🙌 also I love 69 eyes Thank you 🙏
@@Spangelaa When I first saw them at bloodstock 2011 they played the way of fire. Over 10 years later they finally released it XD They're so worth watching live, I'm sure you'd love it :)
@@Spangelaa It really did take quite a bit of "Time" The fanbase likes to take the piss out of them because of it :P Please do, you won't be disappointed, depending on recording quality of course! :)
@@timometsanoja9666 BROooo I recently heard about Heavisaurus 😂 maybe it’s because I have kids? I don’t know maybe I read a quick article about them, very cool stuff wish I was introduced to them as a kid…all we had here was the wiggles and they’re not very metal 🥲
@@Spangelaa it is actually legit metal music although the lyrical content is kids appropriate... And they put out a lot of stuff. At least at one point they were putting out a new album per year. They have had all sorts of visiting stars from the metal world play on their albums etc. I have lost touch as my kids have grown out of that phase, but it was quite entertaining while it lasted... Even for an older dude. Check out HeviSaurus "Riffi Raffin Tilubiisi"... The title track from that album "Räyh" is also a classic from them...
Many people who don't know much about Finland can say with almost certainty that Finland produces a lot of high-quality metal music. It is one of the things that Finland is famous for in the world. It is said that there are 50 metal bands per 100,000 Finns in Finland - that means that Finland has the most metal bands in the world compared to the population. So it's no wonder that Finland has done well with its metal music.
Yes!! I knew that they were famous for producing great metal, it’s like the Finnish just embrace the culture for all that it is unapologetically it’s so awesome. If I didn’t have you guys I would have been stuck with Spotify’s horrendous suggestions 😂 thank you!
Hello avian being; Kai Hahto the drummer for Wintersun is also the drummer for Nightwith. You picked THE most poppy Nightwish song... perils of using spotify again. Yes they are symphonic but they have many other brilliant songs.. some a lot more metal. Try Romanticide Live at Wacken (Nightwish live is always better)
HAHAHA you did your research 🐦 oh interesting didn’t know that one! Yep I feel like I should give them another go, a few people have said I should listen to more of their stuff to truly get a feel for them 😄 thank you!!
@@Spangelaa The thing with Nightwish is that they are the most successful Finnish band ever for a reason: they can appeal to a lot of different listeners. Think of their singles as gateway drugs to symphonic metal. People like you who are already hooked don't need them; you can start from their more serious stuff. A rule of thumb: although many of their shorter songs (like Romanticide) are heavy or otherwise non-poppish, every Nightwish song over 8 minutes long is at least ambitious if not your type of music. And live at Wacken 2013 is legendary. Unfortunately for you, the Nightwish songwriter Tuomas Holopainen dislikes growling for the most part. He only writes growling into his songs when he's feeling angry and wants to emphasize his message. But he does have a female vocalist who can sing pretty much anything he asks her to. Growling included.
Swedish eh? Ok, a fresh flashback from the 80's, Nestor. "Kids in a ghost town" and "On the run". Both from the 2022 album (called Kids in a ghost town). Then again, not really metal. More like 80's (hard) rock. And like someone said earlier, Nightwish has a ton of different styles, even though symphonic metal is their backbone. You'd maybe like "Master Passion Greed" at least. Most likely "Your's Is An Empty Hope" too (with their current singer). Cheers from Finland.
If you want to try Swedish metal I would suggest the following: Arch Enemy - melodic death metal Amon Amarth - Viking metal Candlemass - Doom metal Opeth - prog metal Sabaton - military history power metal Bathory - black viking metal Therion - symphonic metal (I know you said you are not a fan of this genre but thought I would toss them in) Cheers from Iowa USA
@@alancarter41 thanks so much!! I know Opeth and Amon Amarth, have heard of Bathory. I’ll definitely use your recs 🙌 I like some symphonic metal, maybe I’ll love therion 😆
@@Spangelaa No worries. Guess I should have added Hammerfall, after all they were one of the bands my son introduced me to 20 years ago that started my metal journey.

More Amorphis and Battle Beast! You started Amorphis with their radio hit song, which doesn't represent them very well. Try some of their early stuff or later songs like The Bee or Dead Man's Dream. Btw Amorphis started year 1990 and HIM 1991, so Amorphis is year older - and still kicking strongly. Noora Louhimo from Battle Beast is absolutely my favorite female singer and I would have hard time to choose winner, if I needed to decide between Noora and Tomi Joutsen from Amorphis.
Though to be completely honest my favorite songs from Amorphis at this moment are Sampo, Golden Elk and Northwards. With Battle Beast I can't choose favorites. About 3/4 of their songs are my favorites. 😅
Ohh thank you for this!! Yeah I totally agree I didn’t give Amorphis a fair chance and did want to listen to more of their stuff and I did like it because it reminded me slightly of HIM (even though clearly Amorphis was first 😂) oh yeah Battle beast definitely impressed me! I wish I was even a little bit as talented as Noora . I’ll definitely dive deeper into Amorphis, thank you!
@@Spangelaa You're welcome! 👍 I must yet add that Children of Bodom has covered Amorphis and vice versa. I think that they are from the same hood. In book about Amorphis band members tell, that they got to know young talented guitarist Alexi Laiho when he trained in same building as them.
@@Spangelaa In my opinion, Amorphis and Children Of Bodom are the best Finnish melodic death metal bands, whereas Amorphis is progressive and COB is neoclassical.
