WHat a wonderful lecture!! Thank you-- I have always been attracted to her work, especially figures of the mother-daughter relationship, the hysteric and family dynamics as home and prison. Thank you for all this careful work and presentation
Unbelievable; what's supposed to have been in any way special or particularly noteworthy about the fact that some his sitters were Jewish ? Nothing, nothing at all.
I don't think the stuffed monkey can be considered a 'ready made'. That is a duchampian term, and it means an object selected according to the the criterion of aesthetical indifference. wheras the monkey is obviously an emotionally charged object.
excellent; what Yuskavage says about painted thingness etc. amusing how the curator is constantly trying to catch up, but flawed production; sound and visuals - worth watching but you're going to have to google all the images as you go along - oh and so weird that neither talks about the fact the Yuskavage's work is epic and Vuillard's is not.
Was lucky enough to see him seated alone at table in MOMA's garden one day. I went over and told him I loved his paintings but was too shy to say anything else. He thanked me and I left. Have since read much about him and what I love above all is how generous he was with his money. Always asking young artists he knew if they had enough money when he met them. Surely a sensitive soul like Mark is now enjoying a wonderful next life.
Thank you for this feature and to the artist for his openness to share such substance. I am with joy that Andrew has had the “freedom to imagine”. The creations I’ve seen over the years have all been clean, cultured and with an inviting depth signature to his obvious skillsets. I had not known of the timehri rock paintings of Guyana thus enjoyed the reference that inspired me to learn a little more. Again, thank you.
This is such an unexpected comment on a video of such a thoughtful lecture that is about, ironically, how critics, and by extension the audience of the work, takes the work in a very different direction than what the artists and their subjects may have intended. Maybe that's what you meant? Erica Hirshler is a treasure and this lecture was excellent.
@@t3dro I deleted my reply because you said it better than I could. It is sad when people take their criticism of modern art into the world of Sargent.
All museums and or countries in this situation should be ashamed. The whole world knows works were stolen yet conveniently they are in possession? They’re compliant with nazi crime
I had the privilege of attending Jon's book talk in Providence last year and learned many new facts from this one - thanks for sharing, Barb! Wish I was there! Compelling family saga and great story-telling. Can't get enough!
Judaism does not have a personalized image of God or an enlightened person unlike the images of Jesus, Buddha, or Krishna in their respective religions. Perhaps, when Kate mentions the influence of Judaism, she is suggesting the presence of Jewish spirituality and faith in the paintings without a personalized image of God. On a different subject, I wonder about the ventilation in the studio and the voluminous amount of turpentine fumes the artist was exposed to over the years. This was before odorless turpentine I am guessing and whether this would have played a part in the mental health and wellness of Mark Rothko.
Perhaps it is just me, yet this whole presentation feels so disconnected and woody from the artist I have come to know through many sources. Perhaps it is the moms tone style of just reading a lecture, perhaps it is the zoom format leaving a audio distance between the presenter and us out here in internet land. Kinda sad because the emptiness in this presentation would turn people off to this wonderful woman, human and artist. I relate to her so much, so this is disappointing.
What an incredible conversation!!! I'm embarrassed to say I had never heard of Jim Dine before this. What an inspiring, eloquent, present individual. If I ever get the chance to go to New York, The Jewish Museum is definitely on my must visit list! 😄
