Please, what's the conditioner you use to reshape a Kolinsky brush? Also, is it important to use specilised soap for brushes, or a natural soap made of Olive oil is as good?
Thanks voor the video. I had the same problem with Pentel pocket brush pen, it was just too wet to create dry brush effect, so I pulled out the cartridge and use it as a dip brush together with rotring ink.Works pretty well for me that way now.
Hey there, I just picked up this same brush pen as I'm learning to ink and make my own comics, has the india ink caused any issues or caked up the brush tip, I am using waterman ink right now but it just isnt dark enough on the page to me?
How does this stand up to long term usage? Do the bristles fray? Does it lose its shape and no longer produce fine lines? I'm happy with my Pentel and I'm always looking for a better brush pen.
A genuine and semi stupid question, but do you by chance sell or have a resource where to get inking practice sheets with decent quality paper, I was printing off sketched out comics for a bit but my buddy’s printer kinda sucks XD;;; I want to learn to do better line work as I am mostly a digital artist, and finding your page a few weeks ago really got me going to dip my toes back into hand inking.
Cool supplies Jason you should try the Pentel white ink pen, and maybe an electric toothbrush for different effects! so yeah I'm going to try and get the F-w ink and Rapidograph pen.
Try the Caran D'Ache Fixpencil 3 it fits a Hunt 102, I just tried it. I personally never found any issues with the Speedball crowquill holder. I have some regular pen holders that I drilled a 3mm hole, I also did the same to a metal scalpel pen to try it out, I found it too heavy, there's definitely a market here, surprised the chinese didn't clone those Maxon all metal pen holders which were a clone of the Grifhold nib holder, the japanese ones go for a lot.
You are not respecting the lighting and line weights. Example 0:13 top left hand corner Batman face. Bridge of his nose should have a thinner line. Light is hitting it. Under the nose should have the thicker line. Overrall, you have too many deadlines. Deadlines means no variance of thick to thin, especially. When you are texturing. Richard Friend and Jimmy Reyes go over inking on their RU-vid channels.
@@counterstrike89 some people to layout and sketching I red but I just mean printing in red vs blue. The only reason is to make something line work easier to read.
There isn’t a standard. You can reproduce pretty small these days. I will on occasion use a .003 for certain small things but it’s rare that you will have a line that small that is all one width through out.
Really excellent work! I think it looks great! I'd love to see the effects of those two red Michael's "segmented" brushes. I only use synthetics, but have yet to try a trad synthetic brush that didn't have something about it I disliked, so I've resigned myself to various synthetic brush pens. I'd like to try a Kuretake 13! FYI, if you don't like the stock ink in the Pentels, I have successfully refilled their cartridges/bodies (for the squishy gray fude ones) using a syringe with UIltradraw for a couple years now without ever cleaning them. Also used Ultradraw in a Kuretake 8. Never had any clog, but I do use the pens daily. If you get the big bottle of Ultradraw, you save a lot of money! Just shake it well before you fill your pens, and you'll have a very smooth, super black ink: )
I do use Ultradraw in my Kuratake and my tech pens. I use Black Star for most everything else. I do want to get a syringe for trying to refill my Pentels
@@jasonpaulperkinsart That's cool you use Ultradraw in your tech pens! Which ones? I've tried it in some fineliners. Worked in Pitt pens really well, but so-so in Microns and Copic SPs.
@@badicecream2913 I use it in Rapidographs. That’s how I started using it. Never tried in copic SP. I wish that worked. I love those pens but the ink isn’t my favorite.
@@jasonpaulperkinsart I've always been scared off of getting into Rapidographs because of the rumored maintenance, but I love the idea of the them. I hate having to stop and fiddle w/tools, even if I love the tools. Hear you 100% on the SP ink! The Ultradraw works, but doesn't flow *quite* as well, and leaks a bit around the tip. I've only tried it on an 0.7, since I have two of those. But something like an SP that you could choose your own ink? Boy, that would be great: )
@@badicecream2913 rapidographs are a bit of maintenance but I have found that if I clean them as a routine every couple of weeks I rarely have an issue. I have a set that I got as a gift but really only use about 3 or 4 of them.
Thanks Jason... yeah gonna try to get the sable brush pen I don't like the feel of the synthetic ones thy are too bouncy, I'm guessing this is akin to your regular watercolour sablewithout all the washing out and cleaning issues, wish me luck as I am english and this hasn't popped up on my radar😊
I actually drew all the hands in that book a couple years ago. Couldn't tell how much it helped, but woo, George Bridgman sure was brilliant. Have you watched Marshall Vandruff's 2020 Bridgman Bootcamp videos? Those really helped crack Bridgman open for me. Lot of fun too.
@@jasonpaulperkinsart It was something you used to have to buy on his website, but he was nice enough to upload all of it to YT pretty recently. Great stuff!
Im resortimg to mineral paper in order to avoid scratching up pages with my nib. Ill have to try this paper out. It looks like it takes the ink very well.
These are some super cool ideas! Have you tried a 3mm clutch lead holder, or does it need to be slightly larger than 3mm to accommodate a standard crowquill nib?
@@jasonpaulperkinsart Yeah, that one looks really comfortable. The one you frankensteined out of two tools, yes? I wish you could just buy those clutch chucks separately.
@@badicecream2913 I agree. I did Frankenstein them together but it was cheap and I still managed to have two tools in the end. Just not how they came in the boxes.
This is actually two different gloves. I have on a compression glove that you get at a pharmacy. I get a little pain in my thumbs from phone use and mouse use. This helps with that. Then I have a simple drawing glove. I think it’s the one that came with my Huion monitor.
You have to pay a lot of attention to the outside contours of each object with Brett's pencils. If you can get it all to 'pop' with the outside line weights alone, the rendering stuff is mostly 'one line' over and over. I inked a number of Brett's pages years ago.
One vote for color! I will give it 24 hours. And commit to it. I have a lot of my stuff on instagram. It’s not my favorite format for images but a lot of the work that has gone into my portfolio has gone there. Thanks again!
Great job Jason, good shout about getting some one else to give you a different perspective or dynamic on your own work, I'm an illustrator interested in comic art but if I am doing something for myself I'll throw it out there and have had some great surprises, keep upthe good work the videos are great...
Thank you so much Russell! I recommend working with artists and mentors to learn and add as much variety as you can. Thanks for the comment. New video coming today.
Some good Jason lore in this one. Similar to you I kinda "woke up" in my 30s realizing what I needed to be doing. Your inking is very impressive I look forward to more of these
Great series that is fairly hard to get these days. I was lucky enough to get a few of them. Ironically the one on Digital Penciling is fantastic, though a bit outdated when it comes to storage size and RAM requirements. Great review!
Thank you. I have three of them. The one for Coloring has one of the best descriptions ever of Color theory and the one on writing is worth it just to read the Stan Lee intro about Denny O’Neil! Thanks for the comment!
My daughter? You mean my dog Hanne? She is doing better. Eating and going to the bathroom but she is still weaker and more tired than normal. Thank you for asking.
I play videos like these in the background when I draw. Since I draw a lot, I'm always in search of new artists with a different style, a different voice, different techniques, etc. I really absorbed a lot from watching and listening. Your work is amazing. You really lean into the detail when a lot of artists find ways to use shorthand or just block out those sections in shadow. Im looking forward to drawing to more of your videos good sir.
Aww, thank you so much!! That is really wonderful to hear. I do the same with videos. I learn so much from artists just chatting about art and the industry. I do have more coming soon. 🙏
I change it to blue line in procreate or in clip studio. Find a page of pencils and look up videos for blue line art. DrRocker has one for Procreate and there are lots of videos for it in photoshop and clip studio. It’s not really required but can help. I will also do red line sometime to help me see better.
