The only thing that I will be planting in the middle of October, here in Canada, is my hard neck garlic. Nothing else would survive in the ground over our cold winter.

I'm using my own saved garlic, Provence Whits, onion seed, toughball, I have a lot of salads growing, - Mizuna, pak choi, komatsuna. red mustard, rocket, spinach, winter density lettuce, broad beans. I have alreday sown and planted my winter brassicas of savoy cabbage, purple sprouting, Claret and Rudolf, purple cauli and Eskimo. Also lamb's lettuce and Claytonis. Happy gardening 🙂

Decided to give my plot up before I was asked. Just returning back to gardening in my very small garden. Garden was getting neglected. I work full-time, so the weekends were spent at the plot. I needed to do other things. Home things. Plot and garden were then both neglected for a while. So I gave up the plot. Let someone else have a try :-). Felt like a weight had lifted to be fair. I might maybe take on another plot once I retire, as I should then have more time on my hands. I am concentrating on my little garden now. Can't grow lots, but I don't have the pressure. Well done with your decision Ray. Lets see what happens next season x

In which season can we grow the Gypsophila, please?!
@GardeningforBeginners
@GardeningforBeginners 2 дня назад
gypsophila direct in April or September, where they are to flower, as they dislike root disturbance

So.... how long does it take for a cutting from a mature blooming plant to put on flowers? I have read that it takes up to 15 years for the seeds to propagate and bloom. I have a 35 year old with a 16" thick base that is a heavy flowering specimen, with large dark purple flowers that are really something to see. It is also heavily laden with seed pods. I would love to propagate it, but at my age, I may not have the 15 years to wait...... so I wondered if a cutting might bloom in my lifetime.

Yes, correct it does take a long while therefore many people buy plants

An amazing tool I’ve started using to save the aching in my joints is a digging hoe , a different action but worked the soil a lot easier, my misses is 60 and she couldn’t believe how easier it is for her. They’re used like a long handle pick axe or adze.

There’s plenty of good stuff for the compost or mulch with all those clippings 👍There was a waiting list for our little village site ,I got mine last year and more than half are over grown still a year later, I nearly gave mine up but luckily it’s a short walk and I’ve got used to going regularly just to do a little now I’ve sectioned it off . I’ve sown a load of green manure seeds for now and mulching everywhere I can with clippings I mow up to get some life back in the soil , it had been bare from continued weeding . The soil where I put potatoes Is better because I had mulched over those with compost and clippings etc , many more worms

I cover empty beds using water permeable membrane or cardboard.
@GardeningforBeginners
@GardeningforBeginners 22 дня назад
Using cardboard in your vegetable plot can offer several advantages. It helps to control weeds, enhance soil health, and maintain moisture levels. Moreover, it can discourage pests and is a budget-friendly choice

It’s was really interesting, I think I will collect some pods dry then out and try to grow my own from seeds. It was not just interest from a fuchsia point of view. For years I have tried growing lots of things from seeds. Maybe if was actually seeing it rather than just assuming. Quite a few things I have tried to grow from seeds and those that do germinate. Which sometimes are very few and far between. So having seen how many fuchsia seeds he planted 4 rows, to actually see how so few of those germinated. I realised I wasn’t doing anything wrong. This guy is an expert and it looks like it’s just luck of the draw to hoe many seeds of all plants and flowers germinate. I honest thought when I perhaps only got a day one of two from something like 75. Seeds. It’s that why I blamed myself. So it was nice in one way to finally realise it’s not necessary down to who plants the seeds it’s the seeds themselves. I am excited to see how he’s going to cross plant to form a new fuchsia
@GardeningforBeginners
