I used to go a lot more, but I don't really go that much anymore since I don't read as much as I used to. The library near me always seemed empty, but it's still always well kept inside. I'll have to go back again some day.
@@StitchandWitchwell this whole clip only talks about rapist men being killed, how “fear” should be “turned on men. Not “rapists” just the men. Nowhere do you say “all rapists”. It really does come across as more hatred towards the fact that the rapist is a man and not a rapist.

I would even say official audiobooks are even better than reading because there is no chance of you misunderstanding context and you wont mentally skip some lines by accident. So you actually get the complete story and the authors intention
Not everyone can physically read books so I think audiobooks are still reading. Its just that youre processing the story via audio instead of visual input. :D People that have low or no vision, people with dyslexia or adhd or other problems that would cause them not to be able to read or retain the information
it’s not physically reading, like you’re not actually reading words on a page, you’re just listening to someone tell the same story as would be in a physical book. so i wouldn’t say listening to an audiobook is reading, but it is a form of storytelling just like written words are. they do nearly the same thing, but one is reading and one isn’t.
I did not know this was a debate Reading is reading and listening is listening/hearing (not exactly the same but hold on a sec) It doesn't matter how you consume the book, as long as you're able to consume the book and enjoy it
They did a study where a group of people would just listen to the audiobook, one would just read the book, and the other would read the book while listening to the audiobook. Lo and behold they found no difference in levels on comprehension! 😂
Ok, as someone who listened to an audiobook recently super recently, it was amazing. I have trouble keeping interest in a big chapter book. It won't even be the content i just cant picture it, and i would finish a bunch of books halfway and turn on youtube instead... Bro, listen to a dramatized version. Like my brain turned into a whole play. The words stick in my head like glue. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. On top of all that, my vocabulary has gotten better. I would rather sombody listen to an audio book vs doomscrolling.
For people with attention disorders like ADHD, having a reader is SO much more helpful when you really want to read a book but can’t get yourself to read the first paragraph 😅

Depends on how you learn words to me. If you can spell them and contextualize them just as well when you listen as when you read and I don't see too much of a difference.
I used to be anti audiobook. I changed my tune when I started to listen to stories. Then it was further pointed out that people who are dyslexic, blind, elderly, or otherwise unable to read a physical book without significant struggle, often feel like they can't read until someone reads it for them. I then discovered that back in olden days, women who were doing sewing or churning or other work would get together and have someone read a book to them as they worked. So as a former naysayer, AUDIOBOOKS ARE VALID! THEY ALWSYS HAVE BEEN! I still prefer reading a book myself. I'm faster than the narrator. But, I can enjoy an audio book when I need to do other things.
Nobody said they aren't valid except gatekeepers like you used to be. You still get the same story as if you actually read it, it's just told to you. Which in turn means you aren't reading it.
sorry but audiobooks are simply not reading. Not that they have any less value then reading at all and i personally love audio books. the reality is the definition of reading clearly a states reading is consumption of written or printed material and words mean things. It doesn't matter honestly because both are still getting the job done.
I think I only really doubt it for myself, like I won't police others saying they read a book when it's audio but for me it definitely isn't the same where I know for sure I used an audiobook because I can barely remember what happens in the book usually because I get wayyyy more distracted so I do think for some people claiming it isn't really reading have some validity if it's based off their own experience where the retention level clearly feels different, but for those who feel like there is no difference or it's even just the only way they can read anyway due to a disability or time, that's perfectly valid! Just wanted to explain a possible less demeaning side of the "not quite reading" club I guess
When my father - who is blind - consumes a movie should he say he “listened to it” then? The blind and visually impaired community still says “I’ll see you later.” The D/deaf and HoH community says “listen to me!” The actual definition of these words is far more fluid than some of us seem to want to consider…
@StitchandWitch yes your blind friend listened to the movie. Just as people who consume audio books are listening to books being read. They are not reading them. Yes some words have multiple meanings. It doesn't change the fact that listening to a book being read is not the same as reading it. Your friend who is wheelchair bound is not walking to the store. Some people have different capabilities and we don't have to change the meaning of words to make everyone the same.
You mention Tress, and this debate reminds me of something that happens in the Brandon Sanderson fandom. You will get people who read read the books and people who listen to the books, and often the only debate is over character name spelling and pronounciation. People who only read read know how to spell the name but not always how to pronounce it, and people who listen know how names are pronounced but can't spell it. The first time I listened to the Stormlight Archive, my friend was read reading it, and we tried to talk about it. I asked about "Yasna" and it took him a while to realize that I meant "Jasnah" because he was reading the J like a J. Anyways, point is, there's pros and cons to both, but the important thing is that the book is consumed in some way.
No. Because actually looking at and reading the words do different things to and for your brain. And even those that are visually impaired; yes the audiobooks are awesome for them but even reading a book in brail does different things to and for the brain than just hearing it. I hated reading in school and it shows in my terrible spelling abilities. I have great vocabulary but I can't spell shit.
I don't quite agree. I think that this is only a debate because people want to hold the act of "reading" to a higher standard than "listening" when, as human beings, most people could stand to learn how to listen.
Physically reading is a luxury of time I don’t have anymore, so I listen to audiobooks all day and it’s not the same but it’s 100% reading. You have to follow along like any other story lol
Interesting, I hadn't really heard this debate but as someone who only listens to audio books, I feel like it's hard for me to call that "reading" for myself. I listen to them like I listen to RU-vid videos or podcasts, I never watch the screen, and i wouldn't call those activities "reading", but I'm curious what arguments people have that it's actually reading.
High-functioning autistic here... it's reading... I have on paper a fifth grade reading level in real life it's probably 10th grade but I understand so much more then i can read. So audio books are the why to go
I have been listening to Jane Austen audiobooks for over a year now. I can get a book under my belt when I’m forced to be doing other things. I can hear it repeatedly, and sometimes I stretch it out to make it last. It’s not the exact same as reading for me, but I’m still enjoying a book, which is a treat I love ❤❤❤
Your logic is extremely illogical. By your own justifications, I can say I’ve read all the Harry Potter books because I’ve seen the movies & have heard people who have read the books explain the parts that were never in the book. If I heard a portion of the book being read aloud, I could instantly recognize it, but Ive never read the books. I know the story of the Christmas carol practically word for word… I HAVE NEVER READ THE BOOK!!!! The process of reading QUITE LITERALLY involves you looking at written words with your eyes & then using your brain doing the work of figuring out what those words meant…. Listening to an audiobook is the equivalent of someone reading to you. If you read your child a book at bed time, then you don’t count that as a book that THEY’VE read simply because they heard the story… If a teacher reads a book aloud to the class, but not one of the students have looked at the pages, then the students have not read the book. The fact that anyone has to explain this is absurd.
If someone asks you if you've read an book you listened to are you going to say "No I listened" but really the only reason the person even asked is because they want to discuss if you liked it or not. Any book I've listened to I'd just answer yes when someone asked me if I've read it because they aren't asking because they want to know if I literally read it
As a vision impaired person. They count as reading. I am able to read longer content, and not have it be a robot voice. Yes large print and ebooks exist but i still a lot of eye fatigue from reading them too. So an audiobook lets me do what I did as a kid sometimes and get really into a book and finish it fast bc i physically can't otherwise. Like the no it isn't argument comes off kinda ableist at times bc they can be and are an accessibility tool, just everyone benefits in the same way elevators and ramps benefit everyone.
I agree that it counts as reading if you are disabled and can’t actually read, but I’m sorry it’s completely different for abled people. Saying that a seeing person listening to an audiobook counts as reading is like saying an abled walking person using a wheelchair counts as walking… Did they get from place A to place B? Sure, but they’re clearly lying about how. If anything, that feels a million times more ableist in my opinion. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG with using audiobooks to read when you don’t have the eyesight or mental ability to read. Just as there’s nothing wrong with ANYONE listening to an audiobook. However, it’s extremely disingenuous for seeing people to call it reading so they can feel self-righteous about how many books they checked off a “look at me” list. This entire video was just her convincing herself that because she knew the story, then she shouldn’t have to actually read the book in order to SAY she’s read it in her social groups. It’s just as easy to say “oh yeah, I listened to that book! I loved it” as it is to say “oh yeah, I read that book.” But all this video proved to me was that people are consciously mincing their words in order to feel better about themselves & to feel better than others.

Anyway, watch Inside Doom's Most Terrifying Mod (by PowerPak) its kind of based on/references House of Leaves and its honestly just a visual treat, the Power Pak video specifically goes through the mod while reading and showing the attached journal entries and external media that accompanies the game. Its truly fascinating and there is nothing and will never be anything that comes close to this multimedia treat. Im not sure whether to call it an ARG or not, but I would say it is since it is/was interactive, and youre meant to suspend your disbelief and view the ARG as someones heartbreaking, irl, lived experiences crafted into a love letter for a lost lover. Its beautiful and is far beyond "just a reference" to HOL

I think it’s a form of reading, but as you noted, it’s a different brain process. Different things happen in my mind when I’m visually reading a book than when I’m having one read to me. I enjoy both, and time is limited, so I try to fit in whatever I can
