We trace a picture on waxed paper or parchment. Something strong. Then use the awl to make little holes, close as we can without connecting the lines. We put tape or pins to secure the hole paper. We use a makeup brush or a powder puff (velvet powder puff) and push fabric bluing, or s noticeable washable chalk (like the blue chalk powder building contractors use). When all the chalk is push through, lift the hole paper . You spray with hairspray to set it. You have a drawing to embroider on the cloth. This method is 200 years old.
