After I saw them live here in Sydney last year, it occured to me that Alvvays are what it would sound like if Joni Mitchell fronted the Smiths, and I'm ridiculously pleased with myself for that analogy
She is doing some crazy stuff with that voice ya'll. Switching registers quickly but smoothly and it sounds almost robotic. I've only ever seen Jewel do this in some of her older stuff. It's very cool
She has a peddleboard connected to her mic with a bunch of vocal effects- watch their tiny desk concert you can see her use it on this song a little more clearly :)
I never cared for this band until I saw them live. A bunch of my friends invited me and I was like “alright, not really my thing but sure”. Seeing them play I was blown away. Just the cleanest set I’ve ever seen. Everyone just so dialed in, it was an experience. Big fan now
I became a fan a few mnths before I saw them here in Sydney at the end of last year, but they were just so *magnificent* live, and it made them one of my favorite bands.
As someone who recently saw them live and was worried about the same thing, phone recordings like this don’t do them justice. Trust me they are awesome live
