Samoans are the original navigators. They were nicknamed "the island of the navigators" by early french settlers cause of how knowledgeable and skilled they were at voyaging and sailing the seas with practices such as using stars to navigate. Also they didn't have simple canoes they used boats with masts that used wind to carry them. Samoa is also at the centre of Polynesia and the name "Sāmoa" literally translates to "sacred centre". All Polynesians originated from Samoa. Hawai'i for example were Samoans who sailed from the island of Savai'i. Notice the similarities between the names also Samoan and Hawaiian culture is very similar.

When samoa and tonga were settled there was a 1000 year freeze before they ventured east and settled the rest of the islands in polynesia hence why polynesians are credited for exploring and settling the rest of the pacific.
