Clearly the very Last song he wanted to be singing at that stage of his career and development. Superb song in its original state. Way beyond Dire here - and I am fairly certain that he would (gleefully) agree.
I'm going to assume the piano is Jools Holland, who often participates with the bands he has has on his shows. There's likely no 'irony' or 'message' to it. JH likely said "Do you mind if I play piano?" and John Lydon likely said, "Okay."
Cripes, remember watching this live back in the day! he was much better to listen to back then as he was fairly on key, whereas these days he doesn’t even bother trying to sing in tune, and I just can’t listen to it.
As I understand, this was in preparation for the triumphant return to Randy's Rodeo where they'd promised to play some real honky tonk music this time!

What do you think of Party Napkins? (That's what I thought Lydon had said when he introduced *Martin Adkins* and the other members of PiL on American Bandstand!)
The Monochrome Set did the theme music for a 2014 programme about the London Underground. I am working at home today and I just watched it on a channel called "That's TV Scotland". That's how I came to the Monochrome Set.
