I think it’s quite clear they knew what would happen if they kept going, they were even warned by the FAA. But what do you think is going to happen when you stand up against any authoritarian regime. It’s not like they didn’t know, rather it’s the fact that they knew and were willing to sacrificed themselves anyways for the good of their people. That’s what makes people remember them.
