I wonder if warriors of ages past adhered to the concept of human shields. I dont think you can win the hearts and minds of a nation through war, either the populace want you or they dont. If the majority aren't willing to fight for your beliefs, you cannot change them. If you want the nation to adhere to your beliefs and culture, it has to become a war of conquest and brutal suppession, in the medieval sense. You can't have it both ways, and from Vietnam to Afghanistan, the West hasn't taken this to heart.

We got to ramadi mid 06 coming from up north near mosul. There was still fighting going on, the worst i saw was in sep-nov. Maybe not as bad as in this vid, idk. I was driving an abrams so its hard to say, i felt pretty safe most of the time except for the ieds. Ran over at least 5, blowing the track off usually and having to get towed back in. Drove all around that city though. I remember the night we got there driving through the middle of town. Even through night vision you could tell how fucking insane it had been there already w massive holes in buildings and craters in the road. Never had seen anything like that. It was eerie as shit too because it looked like a ghost town. One of the ieds we ran over a few months in crippled the tank pretty bad so we had to convoy across town to get parts from the main base, coming from camp corrigedor. It was a tank, us in the 113, and tank behind us. Got the parts and headed back exactly the same way we came(wasnt much other option). I was sitting in the back of the 113(light armored track vehicle for my non vet peeps). I couldn't see out of it minus a little bit of daylight from the driver hatch. We stopped and I thought oh that's not good why we stopping! Before I could even finish that thought a bright flash went off right next to me and all of the air in my lungs felt like it was pulled out in a instant. Disoriented, nearly deaf now and choking on smoke, I realized we were hit and our vehicle was filling up w smoke real fucking quick. There was a few of us in there suddenly trying to get out of the same small hatch while also being shot at. Could hear pings hitting that death box we were in. I was the first to stick my head up enough to locate the tank in front us so I knew where I was heading. Before I could duck back in to try to make idk a fucking plan or smthg I was practically pushed out by the others now choking badly on smoke inside the vehicle. Out I went! Jumped off and ran for that tank scared shitless of getting hit w secodary ied or gunfire. Climbed on the tank and dove in that fucker. The tank crew looked really surprised to see me because everyone was still trying to figure out wtf was going on. Just as soon as I made it in the rest of the crew from the hit vehicle was piling into that turret like sardines. Wanna say there was like 8 of us in that turret now lol. That's when I realized how fucked up my arm was from shrapnel and burns - the pain started to hit but I was alive and never felt so relieved in my life. I was gonna live! We did a quick head count and gtfo of there, abandoning that now completely ablaze 113 pos in the middle of route Michigan between the mosque and water tower Spent a month in Germany after getting all the metal pulled out of my arm so I'm not sure when or how they ever did get those tank parts we almost died for lol. -Blue 4 delta C 2-37
I am from there and I served there as a Cop from 06-13 as well. Thank God I am not there anymore . I have seen a lot of death and fear and I still have many bad memories. Ramadi was once the worst and most dangerous place in the world. I have lost a lot in this city: friends, home, family. But scenes of destruction remain in the city to this day. Fortunately, people are now happy and living without fear, despite all the suffering they have experienced for years.
