"Men don't cry". Those 3 words was taught to me at a young age. Asian so being eldest n male means like it or not, you're the next head of the family. Everyone's depending on you to be strong. Didn't when my dad died, my mum died, my grandmother died. Only time was when my dog died. How do you live when you're so screwed up?

This is literally one of the most powerful monologues and best scenes ever in tv history. Ed O'Neill crushed the shit out of this scene!!

Spent every weekend for 6 months cleaning up dog and cat crap to save up for prom (limo, tickets, dinner, tux, etc.) and saved liked $4-5K. My date wanted her friends to come in the limo with us, they were rich and well off and didn't offer to pay any of the limo, I lived in the upstairs of a house turned into an apartment. She ended up walking off sometime during the after-party and hooked up with another dude. I walked home 6 miles at 3 a.m. and had to take a lifeguard class final at 6 a.m. for my second job for the summer. I often think of this clip for some reason whenever I think back on that evening.

This is why I love this show and have NEVER gotten sick of it in reruns. Because they tend to the pepper the ridiculousness with moments like this. Ed is a great actor.

My dad was a tough guy, but something he did without fail was tell me he was proud of me and that he loved me. He had problems with his father and probably didn't want me to go through the same thing.

I'm very sure mine's like that Never shows an ounce of emotion, acts like he's made of steel but the sad truth is he really isn't The way he's going with the drink, he'll definitely be gone within a few years and I'll definitely regret not trying to talk to him even though he really couldn't be more stubborn

This and the scene where jay and phil share a drink in the rain storm S7 E14, Jay shared so much and drank that drink in silence to honour his friend that died, he didn't tell anyone, only Phil knows that, so that is sad too, how much men hold it in

My stepdad was the same with me. He was born & raised in Mexico before immigrating to the US, so he was tough & old school. He was an ass at times but he always there for me when my biological father wasn’t; he came with me on camping trips when I was in the Boy Scouts & when I graduated high school. He taught me how to be tough, do yard work, and how to be a gentleman. When he and my mom broke up, I was heartbroken but I thanked him for everything that he did for me and for being there for me.

My dad and I had a falling out when I went off to college. He got diagnosed with BPD and burned about every single bridge he had. We all tried to get him help but he was his own worst enemy. After years of no contact I wanted to mend the relationship we lost. I reached out and we reconnected briefly. Not too long after he had a heart attack and had bypass surgery. I made plans on a Friday to drive out to the hospital the very next day to see him, so that we could bury the hatchet and be father and son again. At 0200 there was a complication with his bypass and he bleed out in a few minutes in his hospital room. I never got to say sorry. I never got to tell him I still loved him. I never got to say how much he meant to me. He died alone and the guilt eats me every single day. Cherish your loved ones, they aren’t guaranteed to always be there.

My granddad was the same. Lost his son and wife in the same calendar year and never shed a tear. I asked him how and he said "it's life." It still haunts me that I couldn't cry after my dog broke his leg to protect me but we had to put him down and I couldn't cry. I couldn't get why I was emotionally stifled why I couldn't cry anymore.

Are you serious? I can't remember a single scene in the show as real as this. Jay is literally telling the men's side of story in the real world. This is exactly what men are expected to be, even though hypocrites say express your feelings, then you become Nancy and weak, and to be honest, nobody cares.
