Nice idea and vid. Will have to try it. Top tip: If you scrunch the paper into a ball and then straighten it out, it will conform to the shape of your pan easier and not spring back. Where did you get the little baking rack pls?
@EpicureanHikers
@EpicureanHikers 3 дня назад
I got the rack from Ebay. I had hoped that it would fit my smaller trangia mess tin but it's a tiny bit too big. As you can see it's a bit too small for my larger Larken (nolonger available) mess tin. These racks are sold alongside copies of trangia mess tins so search for something like "lunch box rack" and check the size carefully. Thanks for the crumpling trick. Got to give that a go.

Great vid. Not really a coffee connoisseur…whats V60 technique? Where can you get the sealer from please?
@EpicureanHikers
@EpicureanHikers 16 дней назад
V60 is a type of coffee filter that has a lot of pretentious techniques around it. To be fair it does take a bit of skill to get a decent cup out of it. I picked the sealer up from Ebay. Lots of similar ones are available. It was under £10. Search for "Mini Bag Sealer 2 in 1 Heat Sealer Cutter Handheld Bag Sealing Machine" takes a bit of practice. Good luck

A little slower, but with Stoves with no simmer option the cake won't burn if water checked & topped up. A very good option. I have tried with alfoil but didn't think about using parchment / baking paper. Well done! Thank you for sharing 👍 🙂

Cooked this way the cake is moist and very sweet. If you keep the cake above the water on a rack it doesn't matter what you use, parchment or foil. Thanks for commenting

Nice stove and good video. The different parts pack well inside each other👍. Making camping stoves is fun. I once made a modification of the Esbit stove. It works with a Trangia gas burner, an alcohol burner and can also burn wood. It might also work with a Trangia alcohol gel burner or a multi fuel burner, but I don't have them.

To clarify.. is the gas cylinder from a gas lamp, and you removed the lamp part of the system?
@EpicureanHikers
@EpicureanHikers Месяц назад
Yes. The cylinder is from a gas lantern. Most of these lanterns fit standard gas cylinders. Some offer a small cylinder as an optional extra that has the same valve as a standard gas cylinder. A company called Camping Moon sells a larger cylinders that holds something like 35g of gas as well as smaller ones like the one I picked up that holds 15g. I like the concept but didn't like the high cost of Camping Moons products so picked up the one in the video for about £15. Unfortunately it's no longer available but others of the same volume are out there and can be found with a bit of searching. I hope that answers your question if not please ask again.
@EpicureanHikers
@EpicureanHikers Месяц назад
The gas lantern cylinder is removable for filling. Also the lantern can be attached to a standard cylinder as shown at the beginning of the video.

That's pretty cool...I never thought that those little stoves could be used like that
@EpicureanHikers
@EpicureanHikers Месяц назад
The smaller the stove = less heat. Sometimes less heat is better. We tend to prepare for the most extreme weather which we rarely experience. I started making these little stoves as a backup to my main stove so that if everything went pear shaped I'd be able to get a hot beverage or something. After using them in day hikes they are my main goto for day hikes. With careful choice of ingredients and recipes it's surprising what you can do with a simple setup like this. I'm still having fun with this concept but will rely on my canister stove for multi day hikes and use these as a backup. Thanks for watching.
