I too just picked up Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Would love to hear your review at some point. Great video - enjoy the mix of permaculture gardening and books!
Ooh, what genres are you interested in? A good middle grade graphic novel is Pilu of the Woods. I also really liked Odessa, a post-apocalyptic kind of story.
What a fun concept! I couldn’t anticipate a single one of these books, and wouldn’t want most of them either 😅. Sorry this was a disappointment, but I’m glad I found your channel!
Great fun video! I would love book recommendations for a rainy Saturday afternoon spent at an old laundromat in Cleveland. Not wild and crazy, but there is a definite vibe. Interesting characters, humming of the machines, smell of dyer sheets in the air, etc.
You have a lot of interesting books. The only one I've read is The Good Earth, which I'd say is a bit oddly written, but still an interesting look at Chinese culture. Definitely a classic. My TBR list is in stasis as I have too many books on my currently reading list.
Fun idea for a video. The thrift store where I shop has books 5/$1...so my only criteria used to be, "can I see myself ever reading this?"....nowadays, the criteria has changed to "do I want this badly enough to try to cram it into my over-packed shelves?"! I do however love browsing my own shelves when I feel like reading...and more often than not finding many books I don't exactly recall buying...kind of like a cool surprise for myself years later! I absolutely by books based on the cover...! Thanks for sharing your video!
Also for getting manga there are a few official sites and apps like viz media and manga up that you can use but you only get the first 3-4 chapters for free which should be fine for sampling. The only issue is there is only a select few manga on these things so some series the only way your really gonna get it is buying off barnes and nobles or other online stores
I will say vinland saga is not about battles, war, and strategy for the wider story but it takes a while to get there (something like 10 volumes) so if you're not ready for that you can drop it or watch the anime I'll only give 2 recommendations based on things I think you might like Land of the lustrous: You said something about how you liked the use of negative space in manga and this is the king of that. still ongoing at 12 volumes but it's got like only 1 more volume left to go. Girls last tour: This is pretty much my favourite manga ever, a chill story about 2 girls exploring a dead world. 5 volumes quick and easy.
Your video showed up in my feed at an appropriate time. I have a 10 year old daughter that I homeschool. She's an avid reader but hates math and anything physics related. She also thinks she's terrible at math. She's not, but sometimes she needs to go over a new concept twice before understanding the instructions. Then she's off and running.
I know something I struggled with was the different ways of studying the different subjects. Studying math seemed more tedious to me, like it was difficult to make fun. But there are ways to incorporate it into fun activities like baking, sewing, knitting, or woodworking/building things.
I want to thank my RU-vid algorithm for recommending this amazing video to me, what a great video idea Jenny, so unique!!. math and physics in books are my favourite things to see in novels, they add more depth to the novel, also there's a list in GoodReads called "Favorite Science/Math-themed novels" if you want more book recommendations
I love this video! Flatland has been on my list for some time because my favourite cosmologist, Janna Levin, referred to it in one of her books. She has a novel called Black Hole Survival Guide that I’d recommend in particular, it’s technically non-fiction but she writes so poetically and it has a kind of narrative to it that follows a girl who falls into a black hole. Her love for maths, physics and art absolutely shines through in all of her work and she’s so very eloquent.
What a great topic for a book video! Some essays & stories by Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges, particularly one called The Library of Babel, were strongly influenced by mathematics. His writing is great -- beautiful & strange. I did lol @ "Do you want to be able to build a trellis or not?!" People tend to forget about the practical, daily uses of basic math. Lovely to see one of your cats and your little dog hanging out in the background.
I love this. I have had a life-long struggle with math and had poor confidence in the subject that made me avoid the subject area as much as possible. Only now as an adult and being finished with school for some years have I been able to start repairing my relationship with math. Even now my relationship with math is not 100% positive but I have came a long way from where I was. There is definitely something where women and girls put themselves down with math and assume they will never be good at it and just give up. It’s sad to see. I think there are strong and prevalent stereotypes in society about girls being bad at math and boys being bad at reading/writing/spelling/grammar. And, of course, neither are true but they get engrained from a young age and are very persistent. I have been reading a lot of non-fiction over the years of repairing my relationship with math and physics so I don’t really have any recommendations to give for fiction. I really like Carlo Rovelli for non-fiction though and want to recommend his writing in case you haven’t read him yet. I have found it helpful to read a biography of Einstein to see the human side of a mathematical genius to sort of demystify or break down the intimidation factor of a math whiz if that makes sense. It’s good to be reminded that people who are amazing at math are still regular humans with love lives, children, political opinions, etc. I still have more math non-fiction books on my shelf I want to read and another Rovelli book checked out from the library I need to get to. I’m glad you made this video; it is a subject that needs to be talked about more. And I have not heard of any of the books in this video aside from The Phantom Tollbooth and Einstein’s Dreams but I still haven’t read either of those.
Thanks for the lovely comment ❤️ And thank you for the nonfiction recommendations! I'm so glad that this video resonated with you. I remember in Spanish class in high school we had these informal debates to help us practice and for one I debated a boy about women being as capable as men in math and physics despite myself feeling quite bad at math at the time.
Thanks for mentioning the inventive panel layouts. Hellboy also has incredible layouts and tons of literary references, which I love. Now I'm definitely checking out Witch Hat Atelier!
I think the reason why both "a certain..." series felt so short and not fleshed out is because they are spin-off series from a series called "A Certain Magical Index" so they both make the assumption that you have already read at least part of the index series and are already familiar with all the characters and settings. The Main character in the Railgun series was one of the most popular characters from the original series, which is why she got her own. The index series is incredibly popular and has many spin off series which are almost all canon and create a big MCU type multiverse. I definitely recommend giving A Certain Magical Index a try if you liked the setting and world, Just something to note is that it is a Harem series and the target demographic for the series is younger boys (think like 12-18) Which is why the accelerator has tons of action scenes. The index series started as a Light novel series which is still currently ongoing A couple recommendations from me: The Apothecary Diaries - Currently has an anime airing, has a really high quality manga adaptation and the original source material is one of the best Japanese light novels I've Read Medalist - A little different from the stuff i think you've read - this fits with theme of young girl with a mentor/father figure. Its a sports manga about a young girl who is aspiring to become an Olympic figure skater. A dropout/retired ice skater decides to become her coach so she doesn't have the same regrets he does Apothecary diaries will probably be easier to find as medalist is a fairly new manga with a niche genre. I could give tons of recommendations but I'm happy to have discovered your first steps into the medium!
Loved the video! It's awesome that your recs aren't just the household names that a lot of other channels get recommended. Btw, my recommendation would be to read Blue Period. It's a slice of life manga about a high school student discovering their passion for art and going all in on it in hopes of making a career out of it someday. One of my favorites.
Adore "Non Non Biyori"..the anime...(not read the manga) Wonderful characters and wonderful music...So much so..I recently visited the real life school and candy store on which those in the anime are based.(possibly the manga also?.I have some so I should check..haha)..I did buy some manga while in Japan..All in Japanese and I cannot read Japanese..but it didn't stop me buying it!....So cheap when buying from stores like "BOOK OFF"....I hope one day to be able to read read them..but I don't see it happening..to old to start learning..and to costly...But I'll enjoy the pictures...and as I know the anime I'm sure I can work out what's being said..hehe.
I think it would be fun to supplement learning Japanese with manga in Japanese, but I find writing and reading Japanese the hardest part about trying to learn!
So happy to know you liked Cardcaptor Sakura!!! It's one of my favorite manga/series ever and I really hope you can enjoy the rest of it! Clear Card Arc is basically the second part of the manga and it's more recent (last volume is being published in April), I heavily recommend it as well as both are pretty good. I'd also love to recommend Akatsuki no Yona ^_^ This was a great video!!! Keep it up!!!
Oh man, at one point I thought a fun reading challenge for myself would be to read books I find in little libraries, but now I’m worried. 😂😅 My mom actually loves the Bosch series, so I’m sure there is someone who would be happen to find that one! 🎉 Let My People Go Surfing sounds interesting to me.
Glad you enjoyed Berserk enough to continue! Try to make it to the next arc (end of Volume 3) because most people agree that this is the point where the story really gets compelling. Just be warned that the story in general depicts/tackles a lot of dark topics like torture, SA, and related traumas. I'm not trying to dissuade you by any means but understand what you are getting into. There is so much more to the series than darkness and depravity so I hope you are able to continue. 😊 My manga rec is Our Dreams at Dusk. I'd rather not say too much about this one because it's best to experience it first hand. It tackles the theme of trying to understand one's self. Being true to your own identity and accepting the way others want to live their lives. It's a really wholesome story and one of the most touching manga I've ever read.
My gosh! I remember "Millions of Cats" from grade school! I got my Brother and his family a copy for Christmas because they took in the local crazy cat lady's three cats when she bailed and they all had kittens! They have placed all the kitties (including two with me) and some of the grown cats but they still had a few adult cats of their own around the house!
