Be careful about the beauty supply stores. I notice people with the means to buy elsewhere and more options for their hair than my kinky hair are coming into the beauty supply store and the Black hair care section at Target...it’s not that it’s bad but then y’all share the idea like when skinny white Girls took all the plus sized close at thrift stores to chop up and people needed it with other body types(mostly women of color due to racial inequality)and then white women caught on to certain products we use on our scalps and hair from Black owned lines so companies started changing ingredients to suit hair like yours more...which meant it worked like crap for us, and old faithful products were chronically sold out because tik tokers kept sharing it so like if you need something and it’s your only option I get it...but if it’s not remember it’s already where we start and stop so we can’t lose all our little kids hair products to someone with straight hair wanting to pay less for decora. That means nothing in my hair for any style because rubber bands y’all have break or break my hairs. I need the right oils and not the silicone ones because I already have hair prone to dryness so dimerhicone sitting on it or those sulfate heavy shampoos mixed, make my hair fall out. And maybe don’t be the jerk I saw at target who brought all the Black Girl Sunscreen brand instead of just supporting by getting 1 from a couple different formulas, but bulk bought everything for her white family and then I had to go look like Casper with eczema because different skin needs and color....that’s all lol. We have so little made for us and some of those hair ties are cultural mainstays for little girls too so when we can’t pass it down and it’s on some non Black girl who looks cute but maybe could’ve found some alternatives, it feels like getting kicked in the face more than life already does and hair is our safe space 😊
Just now revisiting this from when I first saw it 11 years ago. The nostalgia and giant rush of optimism came flooding back. God, even 11 years ago things were so different than they are now.
