I’ve said it a few days ago, I’ll say it again: The Sequels are SEVERLY FLAWED. But there are some things in them that are great. Either had great potential or were genuinly good. Here’s an example
I didn't like "The Last Jedi" or "The Rise of Skywalker" because I thought the writing was terrible and a disgrace, but I did agree with Luke in this scene about the Jedi. Why? Because he was right about everything. Sifo-Dyas tried to warn the Jedi that a war was coming, and a great evil would rise but they didn't listen. Qui-Gon Jinn tried to tell the Jedi that Anakin was the Chosen One and they didn't listen. The only things the Jedi truly did was take force sensitive infants away from their parents without their consent, installed this fear of the dark side which was the catalyst for turning to the very thing they feared, and they allowed themselves to think they were the greatest guardians of the Old Republic but were driven by past glory. In many ways, the Jedi were no better than the sith and the Star Wars Galaxy is better off without them. I'm not saying the Sith are a better choice than the Jedi, what I'm saying is, they were both wrong. That being said, Luke could've chosen a different path for his Jedi Order, and he didn't. Instead, he chose to give in to the old ways, and he didn't even try to help Ben Solo overcome his darkness. He tried to destroy Ben Solo because the old ways decreed that any student who was turning to the dark side had to be destroyed. Frankly, Luke was a coward and should've done more to help Ben. Sadly, what's done is done and there's no going back now. Now, I can't even watch Star Wars anymore without being repulsed by it. Thank you, Disney, for taking a franchise that many of us have loved for decades and destroyed it with your hypocrisy and hubris.
Luke was right. The Jedi were in a way, responsible for their own demise. They isolated Anakin from his mother while she aged in slavery. Obi-Wan cared more about the code than his own padawan's wellbeing until after she died. That was a perfect opportunity for Sidious to groom Anakin into thinking of him as his only true father figure after Qui-Gon. The Jedi Council obsessed over 'preserving the light' and the Dark Side responded. The Jedi didn't redeem Vader. He acted to save his only son. And Luke never got to further help his father before he died. That survivors guilt probably had a part in him letting fear control him with Ben. Like Father, like Son. Failed by the old ways of the Jedi.
Well Legends Luke remedied their failings in Legends by substantially changing Jedi (New Jedi Order). Hell, even Yoda in Legends in his time on Dagobah came in to conclusion the old jedi were in a way corrupted and dogmatic beyond saving and needed "hard reboot". Luke had have always depth. I read novels where he suffers from serious self doubt and feeling of burden of responsibility over the galaxy. He also develops into exponentially bigger bad-ass than he was in Mando. I have great doubts that (now) canon Luke could as much as scratch Abeloth. The Legends Luke - in one altercations with Abeloth- went literally Force Light Side-Super Sayian. Though he had not outright seriously harm Abeloth that time, he managed to slow her down. Great feat of power indeed since it took both him and Darth Krayt, and destruction of her other two powerful avatars in other locations to finally kill her. However somewhere along the line I heard he came to realization that both light and dark side flows evenly in the Force. He was notrnaive nor foolish. Perhaps overly humble in the end. Edit: And in the end I like the fact that he is not - in the original trilogy- hero who wins by winning. Luke - although prodigy- is aided at every turn by his friends and loved ones.
I know The Last Jedi is controversial, but honestly looking back I get most excited about that movie out of the three, the highs were higher than the other two. I do hope they would've handled Luke differently, and Canto Bight side quest was pointless. But I love when they're talking about the Force and the Jedi, and the salt planet aesthetics are just beautiful, I also like the look of the Irish island set they filmed at, and the star destroyers coming to close up angles from hyperspace was just amazing in the theatre, Snoke's throne room scene is tense and you get the feeling that the characters are in danger, so many great visuals too and cool transitions in the beginning. Even though I disagree with a lot of the choices in the movie, I still think it's well made. But what I wished for even more was that they had actually written the whole trilogy from the get go, and not as a reaction from the previous one.
it's such a great message. that's what I love about it. we need to LET THE PAST DIE. KILL IT IF WE HAVE TO. good stuff. like with Hero Luke Skywalker, hero of the Rebellion? there's a real guiding wisdom to his idea of _IF we fail, we must simply give UP and in. Pack it in, go find a lonely place under the deck to die. Let our unique skills, knowledge and lines go to waste._ I just find that really relatable and touching. it's stuck with me through the tough years. I bet it has for a lot of kids around the world. The Jedi weren't perfect, far from it. they INDEED saw a Sith Master to take hold ... but not without a fight. not without resistance. and they were viciously trapped and wiped out, almost every single one. and even if imperfect, they're certainly better than SITH. for example, they do _not_ explodinate a half dozen planets over three or four films.
Finally a comment section that understands that Luke's arc in TLJ was pretty much on brand for the character himself and that the "legend" was EXACTLY what the complainers bought into. TLJ, in pieces had some great concepts and arc writing that was trying to move the saga forward rather than rehashing it. In time, like the prequels, TLJ will be the stronger film of the sequels when watched starting from Rogue One, IV - IX.
I dislike a lot about The Last Jedi, but what thy did with Luke was not one of them. I liked his pretty frank view on the Jedi's past, a view most of us share as viewers. The Jedi order was full of hubris and dumbass'. 😅
Anakin was always conflicted that's why he was a terrible Jedi, heck the only Jed who could have saved him ad given him the proper training was Qui-Gon
I don’t think people realize how deep these movies are. Revenge of the Sith is where Anakin lost his way, Return of the Jedi is where Luke saves his father, and Anakin Skywalker fulfills his role in the prophecy and destroys Palpatine, Luke Skywalker is a Legend for that. There was nothing Anakin loved more than Padme, and with Padme gone I’m sure he felt dead inside, but then come along his son to save him from the evil he embraced.
What makes this scene so frustrating is that Luke is right. The Jedi did corrupt their purpose by Episode II, by becoming hypocritical and not keeping peace and true justice, which contributed to the warriors that they would eventually become. The Sith were able to use that to create anger, hate, suffering, and war. Eventually, things got so bad that the Chosen One would have to rise to restore the balance of both sides of the Force. That Chosen One was Anakin Skywalker, a young man who lost everything he ever loved, in the name of peace and justice. Except his children. The two people that should've hated him the most for his actions, were the only ones that could break through to him. Ahsoka Tano struck one side of Darth Vader's mask, and Obi-Wan Kenobi struck the other. But it was only Luke and Leia that could crush Vader's fist, and penetrate his heart long enough to save Anakin Skywalker. He repaid them by fulfilling the Prophecy of the Chosen One and bringing true balance to the Force, while sacrificing his life to save them.
The Jedi were indeed hypocrites. Chastising the Sith for dealing in absolutes when they did the same. True balance in the Force was an equal understanding of the light side and the dark side In essence, the perfect Jedi would have been a Grey Jedi.
This just shows how they F'd up Luke Skywalker and his character arc. He had already understood what had happened in the past and true Luke would have seen the missteps of the Jedi and worked to fix them not hide like a bitch!!!
Both sides the light and the dark have the same fate everytime. Rise then fall. But what we learn from Mace Windo one of the only Jedi to learn darkside powers or saber techniques is you have to control the darkside from consuming you to harness is strengths to make a better complete jedi. In other words if the light and the dark sides would learn from one another and become 1, a complete warrior, guardian, protector, attacker.......then they will survive and last forever creating a true peace threw out the galaxy
This also shows how Luke has a misguided view of the Jedi too. If he thinks that the Jedi were at the height of their power during the Clone Wars, he doesn't have a good picture of the Jedi of old. The destruction of the Archives and all that knowledge means he only has snippets to piece together, and they certainly don't reflect how great the Jedi were even during the High Republic era, much less the eras before that.
