I was born in Cedar Rapids in 1971 and lived there until 1984, and this is a blast from the past! All of these businesses were part of my childhood, and sadly, they are no longer with us.
This was one of the best malls in Iowa in its heyday. Too bad it didn't get updated like Lindale did. The opening of Coral Ridge Mall 20 miles down the road was the final nail in the coffin for the "old" Westdale. The decline of many regional enclosed malls, and the redevelopment of some of them (including Westdale) into open-air "town centers", had made me feel nostalgic for Lindale in the 1970's, when it was an open-air mall.
Is this the store that I knew as Barlow Foods in the 1970's and early 80's? I believe this was the store on the west side; we usually went to the one at Armar Plaza because that was closer to our house. I haven't lived in Cedar Rapids since 1984, but I thought I heard that Barlow Foods became Randall Foods. I now live in Waterloo, and one of its suburbs (Hudson) has a small grocery store called Randall's, which I assume is no relation to this one.
I used to love this place! I remember going on a church youth group outing there a time or two in the early 1980's. I haven't lived in Cedar Rapids since 1984, but I heard that Chapman's had been in decline for some time before it closed. Kind of a pity; you just don't find facilities like this anymore.
I’m watching a crime documentary on Michelle martinko , it took me down a rabbit hole . Ended up here . I’m your South Dakota neighbor and I remember when malls in their heyday were an era of simpler times and when people were still more social and we looked forward to get togethers, even at the mall .. thanks for the glimpses of nostalgia.
Where did the Kernels play while they built the new one? I remember the way the stands felt under your feet. We will rock foot stomping sounded great in there, lol
The new one was being built during the 2001 season behind the right field wall. The old stadium now is the upper parking lot between the new stadium and Kingston.
In the 60’s on 2weekends to get parents downtown to shop Mid Continent Bottlers sold O-SO-Good soda pop that 6 bottle caps would get you into a movie on Saturday Morning at the Paramount Theater.
Excellent footage! it brought chills, having hung out with Jimmy C helping his dad Bud and Thermie H , I even ran the the old score board one year. I just told someone about players getting off the bus in spring (Apr) the. chasing snowflakes in there mouths. They were from i believe the DominicanRepublic and had never seen snow before Thanks 🙏 for the Video. I can’t wait to see every thing you have posted.

I worked as a custodian for Linn County while they were in the old Montgomery Ward. Walking through the back hallways was interesting, but finding the hidden deli, that was fun.
Yes, they closed down in 2014, because the City of Cedar Rapids wanted to build a Flood protection levy where the loading and delivery dock was for Smulekoff’s.
K's Merchandise on Pioneer Parkway in Peoria, Illinois, now long gone. Man'o'Man, I spent hours & hours in there back in the 1990's when my 3 Sons were young. They admired the newest VHS tapes, I admired the Furniture & Jewelry counter. Such fun Friday Night dates with my kids! I miss that world, those days, so much. My heart aches. : (
