What memories. Glad i also withessed it. That West field line was still in use when you came in 2014? Interesting as i never witnessed any trains heading West back in 2014.
Yes, the west line was still in use then. Sadly, I didn't know enough about Sumberharjo then to realise I should have followed the trains rather than wait around the mill area. Too late now.....
2014 was my first trip to Java on my own and I knew very little about the sugar railways. It wasn't until much later I realised a field line may have still been in use. I first saw No1 at lunchtime and I think it had taken loris out that morning but I'm really not sure. Have put some photos on Flickr for you. www.flickr.com/photos/50333240@N05/albums/72177720313697024/with/53428174129/
1983 was a long time ago and sadly I wasn't interested in the sugar railways then. That only happened about ten years ago. Glad to hear you're enjoying my work.
Is there any information about how long this on Java can continue to exist?? I notice that it is getting less and less, and I assume that buying new locomotives is not the case.
Definately getting less and less. My knowledge of which railways will work each season mostly comes from local enthusiasts. As preparations get underway for the new season they quickly put footage onto RU-vid. Word seems to get out about the same time if a mill won't be opening or using its railway.
Basically no money available. Also the mills own the track, rolling stock etc and if it's run down to the point of being no longer usable then all the cane can be hauled by road transport which the mill doesn't own. Saves them a heap.
