From a young age I was fascinated by television, watching lots of it, and later on wanting to learn all about it - its history, how it was made. The first magazine a read regularly was the Radio Times. Of course back in those days there were 3 channels and you watched a programme as it went out - no way to record it. But what if you could?
In the late 70's domestic video recorders started to come onto the market and grow in popularity - here was a way to record and keep favourite bits of TV or whole programmes, but they were very expensive. Our family eventually got a rented one in July 1982, so at last I had the opportunity to build up my own TV archive. But tapes were costly - the first Maxell E120 I bought was £8.99, so what I kept had to be selective.
Over the years costs came down and my income increased - the TV archive grew. What I present on this channel are a few clips and oddities that I kept/survived accidental over-records from the period - early to mid-80's.

Cliff Richard would have received payment through the royalties collected for the broadcast of his performance. While he did not receive a direct fee for the impromptu performance itself, the royalties paid by the BBC for airing his music would contribute to his earnings.
@ispybeeper
@ispybeeper Месяц назад
• UK Broadcast: If the BBC paid around £50-100 per minute for music royalties, for a 10-minute performance, this might translate to £500-£1,000. • International Broadcast: With millions of viewers worldwide, additional royalties collected internationally could add several thousand pounds or more.

Great show - wish it was still available in any format. Nellie the Morris Minor is still around and has been fully restored in her original cream colour. After appearing with John and Shep it was used in an episode of the children’s show ‘Rentaghost’. If you search ‘Rentaghost Super Dobbin’ on here you can see the car in the episode. It’s given magical powers to go very fast…

Hello VHS Ephemera, This is so uplifting and lovely. Can I use this on my blog please for a little creative project called Hermes Baby! I am trying to get off the ground? There is a work-in-progress blog on my website currently featured at the top. I will embed it properly so it links here of course and hopefully gets a lot more viewers who love Cliff Richard too 😊 Absolutely no worries if not. Sincerely, Nikki Wordsmith 🤓

Hello Nikki, Of course you may, it's something I taped off the TV at the time, so it would be the BBC and probably the music publisher who actually have the rights to it. Best of luck with the blog, Martin

@@vhsephemera9554 ah ok. Thanks really good of you. I reckon I best check the copyright then for a full embed. Links are fine I think as the URL is uncopyrightable. Such a great English moment! I remembered it vaguely so it was good to see how good a performer Cliff is :-)

My grandfather, who was in the Merchant Navy for 40 years, loved Tales Of Para Handy. It was one of those programmes few people remember now, but was the sort of easy going comedy drama that did well in the nineties.
