Hey! Thanks a ton for the honey you sent my way. Tasted fantastic. I've actually never really liked honey related products, however I can say with confidence that this is some amazing honey. Me and my wife were genuinely shocked by just how fresh it tasted!!

I’m a bit South of you. 3 Colonies of bees that are doing amazing this year, what a difference a year makes. Unfortunately, the mosquitoes are also doing extremely well this year! Not really worried about them and the bees, but it’s been hard to tend to my hives like I’d like to, even mid day. Any tips/advice?

Awesome 👍👋 it's mid winter here in central Otago southern New Zealand but ironically I actually got too pull a finished full depth super off a hobbyists dead out today. 25 kg or 55 american pounds of thyme honey capped in that super. It's very odd pulling a honey super in mid winter but we've had three days of unusual and exceptionally warm weather due to a very rare strong wind coming from central Australia and directly across the Tasman sea (2500 miles) tonight it ends with a Antarctic storm pushing in from the south and snow warnings for my area😂 shame about the hobbyists dead colony but fun to pull a full honey super like you guys are doing. Well raise a split for him in the spring to repopulate his dead colony with. 👍👋 Great video 👍

Why did you cut the thick comb? Also the frame of honey looks great
@zeesbees
@zeesbees 2 месяца назад
They drew out the wax way past the frame since I am running 9frames in my supers. I run plastic foundation so I cut the wax off both sides and put them into an extractor. The cut off wax and honey is also processed in my cappings tank.

If your brood box is full, do you suggest another brood box or add the super box on top? Seeing mixed messages.
@zeesbees
@zeesbees 3 месяца назад
I run two deep brood boxes, if the queen had packed both with brood I may consider splitting, if the two brood boxes are full and there is a nectar flow and there are no signs of swarming I put on honey supers. This is what I choose to do, there are a lot of people running single deep colonies

Correct, they are coming back after a day of looking for a queen to mate with. Drones will make a bunch of flights in hopes of finding a queen that will essentially end his life

If there is a queen cell, does that mean the hive is sensing they need a new queen? Is it fairly common for them to raise queens and you have to stop it?
@zeesbees

What does the term drawing out mean?
@zeesbees

Drawing out is when the bees build wax comb on the plastic foundation. They draw out the wax to then store nectar, pollen, brood.

Why treat with apivar in the spring? How long do you do so? And what about honey collection?
@zeesbees
@zeesbees Год назад
I like to treat when getting a nuc since they are likely to have significant mite exposure in the large bee yards. I pull well before adding any honey supers and treat OA vapor in fall 3-4 times. I was able to get mites loads below 1% and had 4 out of 4 hives survive a Wisconsin winter.
