I remember watching this live on ABC TV,back in the day. It sure was a memorable day of racing. Several different categories and some genuine excitement and entertainment. I'd forgotten that both Brabham and Fangio actually were having a real go. The difference between racing front engine versus rear engine is clear, the magnificent sounding straight 8 and it's huge grunt notwithstanding. I will say something unpopular. To watch this, where no time is measured and no points are scored, pleases me and moves me much more - due to the personalities and the machines involved and the nostalgia - than to watch not only any Formula One from the last 25 years, but even than the legendary Villeneuve vs. Arnoux duel at Dijon. Somehow this moves me deeper, sorry.
repco motors appeared on Brabham in 1966, which means that it is not a 1.5 liter engine, and fangio is on a much slower bucket.fangio's car is 100kg heavier, weaker by about 20-30hp, the engine develops less rpm, the gearbox has less than one gear ratio, which worsens acceleration, not to mention the terrible weight distribution of the front-engine car, and terrible grip on these thin tires.

No seatbelt. He gets out in a second. No earplugs no Hans and practically no helmet. Goggles for wind protection only. Stones in your face at 150 mph. Wow how confident and brave you had to be in those days. He drove faster than other drivers were willing or capable of doing with those incredible visceral machines. Talk about earning your place in History. Schumacher, Hamilton etc have nothing on these guys when it comes to risk. Niki Lauda was a great driver. And today Alonso is showing the way. Yet Fangio will always ring Supreme because of the time and place of his victories.
I was priviliged to see Fangio do a demonstration lap at Laguna Seca. He was in his 80's, driving a Alfa the 151 that he won his first championship in. It was loaned by the Alfa Mueso Storico and the tires were correct but had been sitting for a long time. So he drove several laps to warm them up. Then he drove hard. And this was a sight to see, I was at the tight turn entering the pit straight when the tires lost grip. The car started to spin around, more than once. The not so young Fangio managed the situation. No bumps no bruises to he or the multi-million dollar Alfa. If I hadn't seen it iI wouldn't believe it. The best ever.
Everyone who has just a drop of petrol in his blood must jump off the couch watchhearing this ... one cannot tell where the Arrow stops and Señor Fangio begins and vice versa .. the Brabham is no less exhilarating in its delicate grace . this has to be the essence of racing in class 🌹:)
