I've seen four different cuts of this movie over the course of my lifetime. I can remember seeing it the first time on a PBS silent movies programme hosted by Lillian Gish and that was way back in the 1970s. Then I saw this, Moroder's 1980s rock-opera cut with the stills and bridging intertitles inserted in and remember it being touted as the "most complete" version of the movie that was likely ever to be presented. Then there was "restored authorised edition" cut with additional stills and bridging intertitles that made the theatres in 2001 but it was still less than 90mn. And then there came the 2 1/2 cut with the footage from a 16mm print found in Argentina and THAT is likely to be the most complete version of the movie -- unless one day they upconvert the 16mm footage and use a little AI animation to fill in missing scenes to put together a complete print when the technology gets a little better.

I think that this film is purely "entertainment," and not a propaganda film calling for "proletarian unity." Regardless of what the director himself was thinking when he made this film...
Every company CEO on the planet needs to watch this movie and hopefully realize that it's the workforce that's actually making the business thrive and not their greedy egotistical quest to become filthy rich multi billionaires...
Much as I like the more recently restored version, I have to say I still enjoy the Moroder cut with the rock score. It's how I was first introduced to Lang's masterpiece, and it's the version I'll pop in more often whenever I want to watch METROPOLIS.
Strange to think that, when Moroder released this version, back in 1984, both of the film's lead actors - Gustav Frölich and Brigette Helm - were still alive.
I wonder what they thought when seeing this film that they worked so hard to bring to life back in 1927 finally restored as close to its former glory as possible

I'm not sure how that would work as Moroder composed the music specifically for a 90-minute version and you would have to have endless repetitions for a 3-hour version.
