Want tips Okay As soon as the tip of the brush touches the work line width is established Stop at desired with and maintain the same pressure throughout the line Also paint consistency is very important . Drag the brush
My youngest many years ago asked me to get him a new board. I bought a blank. I airbrush an elaborate skull and knife, then pinstriped both sides and brush scripted "Live to Skate and Skate to Die". My ex wasn't impressed, to be hones nor was I after I saw it... he scuffed the heck out of the designs ... my bad. Love your post mate.
Mate, whenever I’ve painted a skateboard I try to not think about it getting used. I do paint a few banger race cars over here, they get totally destroyed in one meeting and then scraped, it does allow me to just splash the paint on and try different things out, I find it quite therapeutic to paint something nice but temporary. As always, thank you for watching and commenting, it really does mean a lot to me that people still watch these old videos, I might have to make some more when the show season finishes 👍
I have a degree in Fine Art, a certificate in Art Education, specializing with Airbrush Techniques, plus an Associate Degree in Business management. I'm an old Vietnam Veteran (2/502 Infantry, 101st Airborne). I've pinstripe since about 1967 and to this day I still love doing it. You can loose yourself creating magic with negative space... Nice post mate ... thank you
I’m a qualified mechanic, a terrible musician and a worse skateboarder. I’ve been pinstriping about 25 years and still enjoy it (well, most of it). Thanks for your comments and for watching 👍
There is an easy way ... LOL ... I'm retired and still pinstripe clocks and saws as I'm rated 100% Disabled (2/502 Infantry, 101st Airborne, Vietnam) after 9 years US Army I got an offer to teach Airbrush Techniques in Australia, in 1979, been here ever since. I often got asked how long it took me to learn to pinstripe as I did a lot of Truck yard work ... like airbrush work, it's mostly "muscle memory" ... a point in time when you no longer need to think about it. You instead look at the negative space, the balance of the shapes, and go with your visions. Nice post... love your work.
Hello sir. Yeah, I made it as easy as possible, giving all the relevant information but it does take a bucket load of practice and a bit more practice. Thank you for watching, thank you very much for commenting (I see you’ve commented on a couple of other videos of mine, cheers). Is there somewhere online I can see your work?
Most of these videos I’m using Dibond or Alupanel, it’s two thin aluminium sheets with a plastic core, it’s light weight, strong and coated both sides. It’s available at building supplies places or sign materials shops. Thank you for watching, have fun.
The voice is hard to understand. I just got a kit of 1shot as a gift. I am looking to use for my goldleafing to clean up the lines. What reducer is good?
Hello, sorry about the voice but it is what it is and I’m not changing it now. Reducers, I mostly use chromaflo for pinstriping but sometimes use the low temp reducer when it’s really cold. You can use mineral spirits but I find that makes the paint sort of slippery. If you need to clear over your work, add hardener to the paint and use high temp reducer but be aware the paint will dry very quickly even in the brush. I hope this helps, thank you for watching. If you’ve any other questions let me know. Have fun 👍
@@PaintySniffers hardener to the paint? I thought just clearing over the pinstripe would seal the deal. Im working on my motorcycle tank and added gold leaf after wetsanding the clearcoat again. I plan on clearing it after pinstriping the goldleaf edges
Clearing over 1shot can be tricky, it’s an enamel (oil based paint) and can wrinkle up under the clear coat. Anything that I need clearing over I use a little hardener in it and leave to fully cure for a week (or longer if I can), then a few “dust coats” of clear and leaving to dry before hitting it with a wet coat. It’s solvents in the clear that does it.
@@PaintySniffers if i use a hardener as you stated before clearcoating how long should the enamel stay to dry before clearcoating? If its over 24 hours i scuff the enamel with a grey scotch brite pad for the clear to stick?
Hey Painty! I pretty much just got done poppin' my cherry on this second design. I painted the middle part about 300 times. Then I did another 50ish with the width. My lines are starting to look pretty good. Still a bit sloppy. But, now I am moving on to other designs. I also switched from the Mack to the Kafka scrolling brushes set. Anyways! Thanks for the videos. They got my paint drippin'.
Great to hear you’re having fun, I’d stick to the Mack brushes myself but if you’re more comfortable rocking the Kafka brushes, go with it. Thanks for watching and keeping me updated with your progress. Keep them brushes wet and keep that paint flowing 👍
Depends on temperature and humidity but normally touch dry in about an hour and fully cured in a few days to a week. If you’re painting on leather it can take forever to dry. There are different reducers and additives that can speed up or slow down drying as well. I know right, loads of stuff and no definite answer to your question, really sorry about that. Thank you for watching and taking time to comment, it really is appreciated.
@@PaintySniffers I was having my new 4Runner pin-striped with 3 colors (yellow/orange/red) - slightly wider stripes in a straight line down each side of the vehicle. Just curious how long it needs to typically dry. He was painting one color strip per day - so will have my vehicle for 4 days.
Talk to your pinstriper and ask about drying times and aftercare, they’ll let you know. I personally recommend using a good quality wax after about a week, not a polish. Thank you for supporting your local pinstriper and getting the job done properly.
@@PaintySniffers thank YOU for taking the time to answer my questions! I much preferred a painted pinstripe over a vinyl decal. This 4Runner will be carefully maintained - absolutely waxing her well before winter sets in!
Fantastic video BUT..........why the dreadfull background noise ?? Thanks a lot, I'm challenged to do my Morris Minor. After doing your practice pieces though.
By background noise, do you mean the horrible voiceover or the terrible music? I hope you learned something about pinstriping mate, if you have any questions or need a hand with that Morris, let me know 👍 Thanks for watching, Have fun. (Edited for spelling 😬)
@@PaintySniffers Once again, thanks a lot. It's the ' music ' I'm on about. Personally. I think a lot of vocal descriptions on videos are spoiled by this kind of background. That said, I learned a lot and I've also got my 1950 AJS motorbike project ( fuel tank lining
@colinatkinson4150 No problem mate, next time I make a how to video I’ll skip the musical bit. Thanks for taking the time to comment and reply, it means a lot 👍
Nope, as long as the brush is held the right way up you should be fine (wooden stick part of the brush to the left). Let me know if you have any other questions and thank you for watching. Have fun 👍
I use a sign making material called “Alupanel” or “Diabond”, it’s two thin sheets of aluminium with a plastic core, very stiff and lightweight, easy to cut and comes in a variety of colours and finishes. Glass isn’t an easy surface to learn on, yes you can trace designs but it’s a slippery surface to paint and keep control of your brush (I’m sure someone is going to disagree with me here). Practice on loads of different surfaces, people are going to bring some daft things for you to paint, there’s always someone that wants a leather jacket or a textured dashboard pinstriped 🙄. Have fun.
@@PaintySniffers thanks so much for the advice as well as the quick reply!! I’m just getting back into paint, and remembered that I have a set of Mack brushes as well as some One-Shot, so I thought I’d get into pinstriping, too.
That’s a good idea, if you have any issues or questions feel free to ask 👍 Practice daily for no more than an hour (tired eyes can get you flustered) and keep it fun (taking anything too seriously isn’t good for you).
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I’ll be making some more videos when I’ve got the time, probably in the winter. Cheers for watching, keep practicing and keep it fun 👍
Hahaha, not everyone loves the same kinds of music so I’m not surprised somebody doesn’t like it. Yeah, the voice is annoying but it’s just how it is and I’ve no plans to re-record anything. I hope you still managed to learn something from this video, if not then feel free to watch it a dozen more times but on mute 👍 Have fun, keep up the awesome commenting 😀
And I forgot to say that I’m your first subscriber so go and make some content for me to watch (let’s hear what your voice and music sounds like). Cheers for watching mate, thanks for the kind words 👍
I wish i could understand half of whats being sqid, that qccent and voice changer makes it hard to understand. Also, it helps to explain why you are doing something.
Sorry, I’ll try harder next time. I hope you still managed to gain some information from this video and I hope you give pinstriping a go. Also….. while we’re dealing with complaints here, you might like to read your comment and change your typos, it makes your complaint hard to understand. Stay cool mate and have fun 👍
The background music is more of a distraction, than an enhancement. The vocoder voice is also irritating and difficult to understand. Some valid points but not much help for me, as a novice.
Just goes to prove I can’t please everybody. Thank you for the feedback, if I ever do an updated version I’ll try a bit harder. Thanks for watching and commenting. Have fun and good luck 👍
Also, what about pinstriping is it you need more instruction about, is there one particular thing you’re struggling with? If you would like something explained or demonstrated all you have to do is ask.
@sll-tt6bj in this video it’s probably an xcaliber brush in a size OOO or OOOO, I use them a lot for design stuff. There’s a chance it could be a Mack series 10 in a size OOO as I use them a lot as well. Either of these brushes a great for this kind of design work. People seem to think the brush is the most important thing but paint consistency, palleting and practice are the most important things. Have fun, thanks for watching and never ever give up 👍
Hello, I’ve never tried it so couldn’t really say a definite yes or no. I wouldn’t even know if it would damage the brushes. Enamel paint is the most common paint used in pinstriping, urethane paint is sometimes used and I’ve heard some people are now using acrylic paints. You would have to research which brushes are compatible with other paints. Let me know if you try it and tell me how it goes. Good luck and have fun 👍
It’s more so that my fingers slide on the panel without sticking or squeaking. I don’t always wear one, it just depends on how sticky my fingers are on the day. Thank you for watching and commenting 👍
if house is a tooth... you didnt do my houses. you did a perfectly formed, short, right side fang as large as a house. my mouth is watering. thank you.
The more you practice, the easier it gets (spoiler alert, it can still be really tricky sometimes). Thanks for watching and commenting. Keep trying and keep it fun.
Welcome to the channel mate. Sometimes I'll let the paint dry a few hours before the second colour but most of the time I'll work straight over the wet paint. As long as you remember to lift your fingers over the lines then it doesn't seem to be a problem. Thank you for watching. Have fun.
