Journey with Orchids and Fynbos to discover the extraordinary Fynbos and orchid species of South Africa.
Why Orchids & Fynbos? With close to 9000 flowering species of Fynbos, and almost 500 species of wild orchids, South Africa is rich and diverse in its floral beauty.
The Fynbos biome of the Western Cape hosts an array of evergreen and deciduous orchids including species of Bonatea, Bartholina, Holothrix, Ceratandra, Corycium, Pterygodium, Disperis, Satyrium and Disa.
As the series unfolds together we explore the Fynbos floral kingdom of the Western Cape and many wild orchids that South Africa has to offer. So stay tuned for orchid road trips and expeditions, and visits to botanical gardens and orchid shows in the Western Cape and around South Africa. From time to time we will also spotlight some of tropical orchids we have in our collection as well as a few DIY projects.
This is probably a long shot but I have a ceratostylis heterophylla and i can’t find any info about them. Do the care tips apply? And do you know any additional information
I got the Hibiki a couple of months ago, repotted it, removed two keikis, and now it's in bloom. There are two sets of blooms on two canes and half have roots. I'll be posting a video soon.
Ooo thanks for this. I just got my first Zygo! I’ve heard they are difficult. So I’m a bit worried. I live in Miami, Florida. I’m going to keep her indoors.
Hey Dave, just discovered your Channel, are you still active? I live in London and it made my day to see my homeland Kwazulu-Natal. Didnt realise that there are so many indigenous Orchis, but should have guessed.
how often does it flower? I also bought a true seedling size of this vanda and the seller says it can bloom at a small size probably a year if properly cared. I wonder if that’s true?
Hahaha thanks Yoshi 😊🙏. Now you made me stop and think and look back at the old CareCollabs lol. Yep I realised I did a Den. usitae with blooms but that was I small one just with Lynn and I. All the other CareCollabs were with previous blooms. So I mark this as the official first one with blooms heehee 🪴🌟☺️
Your orchid is sooo gorgeous, I'm so jealous of those lovely blooms and the fragrance (since I know how wonderfully beautiful is that fragrance)! Glad they have kept this year! Thanks for sharing your experience with this lovely orchid with us and happy growing.
Bloooooommmmzzzzz 😍😍😍 gosh, that is a great spectacle! Your roots really are those that create root envy 😅 i am so glad that thos year you have the full long term experience 👍🏼 9⁰C, huh? My leaves objected last year to being outside in temps lower than 12. I did better this year by bringing mine inside. Super interesting to hear that your's can go so low, because I would have thought so too, seeing as it has the Neo. Anything stylis, confuses me 😅 thank you so much for giving me a great heads up to get this carecollab coordinated so that we can see.... Blooooommmmmzzzzz 😍
Blooooommmmmmzzzzzz!!! 😍 hahaha… yip I was so excited about this CareCollab thanks for the nudge 😜. Yeah I was saying with those roots the orchid literally takes care of itself lol. I’ll do a root envy video when your Northerner Lou Snearys are in bloom 😅😂. Yeah they can handle the 9 degrees but you’ll notice all the black spots on my leaves that the downside of the cold exposure. I don’t mine the natural look but I’m sure they would have a strong word with me if I take the orchid to my local society for judging 😱. Check my comment on your video about the wild Rhynchos they are crazy troopers. You’d fall off your chair if you see the state of my one Rhyncho, bare root, neglected, shrivelled leaves, cuts, bruises, scrapes. It was pretty much the “oh well” orchid because I have 2 Rhynchos. The other one is super healthy, potted in a hanging basket, no shrivelled leaves, and guess which one flowered last??
Thank you Michelle 😊🙏. You won’t believe how I was running around the house looking for something to display the orchid in/on. Usually I just put the pot on the table but this one is not potted 😂. Then my eye caught that vase 🏺… Do you have a Lou Sneary?
Thanks Fernanda 😊🙏 Paph delenatii and malipoense are the two species I’m waiting for super patiently to bloom. I really hope it is fragrant, will just need to wait and see, maybe late this year 🤞🏻
You and me both... mine has not bloomed for me either, but for 3 years I have managed to get it grow from a tiny seedling into what it is now. I wonder if it we will have our first blooms together in 2023 🤗🤞🏼
That Stenoglottis is so cute! Which Laelia/Cattleya is this that you said you'd run into the fire for? I would love to have some more Laelia species. Autumnalis is on the list. So are speciosa, grandis, rubescens, praestans, ... Bulbophyllum macranthum? Now that's a demon face! Love it - I've been looking for one for a while now. Fungal infections are definitely the thing I'm most worried about... You have lots of plants that I don't have on my radar! Love that!
Hi Matt 🙋♂️ The Cattleya I’d run into a fire for is Cattleya Coronet. I did a #short on it in September last year. Actually received first prize in its group at our local orchid show. Get all the Laelias!!! I love them too, just ordered a new Laelia last week Laelia angereri really excited for it, looks similar to the Coronet… I’ll do an unboxing hehe. The Bulbophyllum macranthum I have had on my wish list for about 2 years. I had one like 3 years back but when we moved it didn’t like the new place and pegged 🙈. Was going to do an international order for it but then I found it at a local grower. It’s also supposed to have a sweet and spicy fragrance, one of the more pleasant smells. But the flowers are so alien looking that’s why I like it. Hopefully I get blooms soon 😊. Yeah I’m dealing with treatments at the moment for bacterial/fungal meh 🙈 but I’ll see where it goes… lol.
@@OrchidsFynbos congratulations on the price! That makes it even more precious, huh? I looked it up - Coronet is harpophylla x cinnabaria, yes? I have a flask of harpophylla in my online shopping cart haha Laelia angereri is on my list as well. And so many others… once I move to a bigger place my collection is going to expand for sure! Sometimes we just get lucky with great finds locally. One of my favorite nurseries in Germany has imports regularly and now they had a Cattleya dowiana rosita which I had been looking for forever. I’ve seen it for several hundred euros but this one was only €25 or so. Granted, it’s a baby but that’s half of the fun!
Thank you Fernanda 😊🙏 so glad you enjoyed the video. You can’t believe how lucky I was to see that spider orchid, they are quite elusive. We had planned to go to a specific area where they were sighted the previous year but there was nothing there. Yet, this guy just popped up on the side of the road in the middle of no where. It gave me so much joy to see this one.
Thank you Michelle 😊🙏. I agree there is nothing more pleasing than seeing so many orchid species in the wild. Especially when so many orchids are becoming threatened.
We are so grateful to you Dave, because once again we get a birds eye of such extraordinary landscapes with orchids and plants growing in the wild. Take care my friend and thank you.
Thank you for such an encouraging comment Margaret, I really appreciate it 😊🙏. I’m always happy to share our local flora and I’m glad you are enjoying it.
