Rest in peace: Stephen Jay Gould (1941-2002) Stephen Toulmin (1922-2009) Oliver Sacks (1933-2015) Freeman Dyson (1923-2020) Daniel Dennett (1942-2024) Only Rupert Sheldrake is still kicking out of this wonderful group of minds <3
I wrote the following to one of the commenters here on this video: Hi, thanks for your well-thought-out comment. How are you doing these last five years? I too have found him fascinating and although his name was familiar (along with a few of his books), he never was on my radar these last twenty years. I just discovered him two weeks ago. You might recheck some of the RU-vid channels as other great interviews have been posted. Oh, and there's a new documentary out on him (from the last two or so years). One host of the great NPR Radio Lab program interviewed him many times in his home and got to know him very well. You could tell how much he thoroughly loved him. That's what got me aware of him and his work. Anyway, there are also audio files of these interviews (that have never been put on RU-vid) on the Radio Lab website. I know you will enjoy them as much as I did. I was brought to tears trying to explain my fascination with him. In these newer, more recent videos, he explains more about his love life (and lack thereof and also how his patients became a sort of extended family). Anyway, I couldn't understand why I got so choked up... I think it was because I had wished I had relatives, a father, or even an uncle, or even a friend like him. His voice is everlastingly soothing and his gentle soul is palpable. I share your appreciation of him as a lovely person and as a great thinker.
Picture Freeman Dyson, bombing Dresdan while Kurt Vonnegut is in an underground shelter Contingencies. People who may never meet, yet intersect in sometimes strange ways
LA MONTAÑA NO DEVORA HOMBRE ES EL HOMBRE EL QUE DESTROZA LA MONTAÑA Y NO RESPETA NADA ASÍ COBRA LA MONTAÑA EL PAGO POR IGNORANTES NO SABEN CON QUIE SE METEN .....
Yes exactly.. What did they say of Voltaire..? Notice how the novice drops the name and leaves very quickly with a chuckle.. nice.. I for one..would love to interview that!! As for Sheldrake.. well that man is one of the greats!! Can you ever.. EVER.. tire of listening to Rupert??! Schopenhauer adored Voltaire…Now.. in there lies my point…why listen to plebs and deny a Master his opinion???
His memory for events is incredible. Not only does he remember the year, but also the month and sometimes even the day. Don't underestimate the power of trees.
Gould is a great mind in his own specific field but such a repulsive, cynically aggressive and ignorant man when talking about anything outside it. He's character is simply immature and under-developed in contrast to all the others.
The point of other animals having "fun", birds seem to have fun by my observations, and recently, i watched a video about bumblebees having play time with little balls that the researchers add in the path to their nest. I personally think that all mammals share the consciousness of the spectrum of consciousness with all living things, we are all mearley avatars of consciousness. If consciousness was electricity, it would fit an interesting analogy that the same electricity can power many unique devices all at the same time, though, we have not yet, to my knowledge, found a way to measure "consciousness", perhaps ne day we will, or maybe, it isn't possible at all, except only, by a living being - if they are self-aware!
I got to 11.40 but im sorry I've had enough of this fool. "Your questions are too deep, too direct, its boring, wah wah wah". Why bother turning up if you dont want to answer the interviewers questions? He seems entitled, with no manners and for 11 minutes, insufferably boring.
Clearly, Dennett misunderstood Nietzsche since, contra Dennett, the idea of the 'eternal recurrence' was put forward by Nietzsche in order to affirm life despite its horrors!
What gives you the idea that he, or any other reputable scientist tries to use Darwinism to explain away "everything"? And please define everything while you're at it.
@@popvinnik He was a 'reductive materialist' - clearly you don' t really understand what that means! 'Reputable scientist' within the current (soon-to-be superseded) paradigm.
@@timothytannerandtheamazing5054 On the contrary, I know exactly what a reductive materialist is as I happen to be one myself. And nice job avoiding my question.
@@popvinnik It's was obvious to me that you are a reductive materialist yourself. Otherwise, you wouldn't be so zealous in defending someone like Gould. Ultimately, there is absolutely no point in attempting to convince you and those like you that the materialist/mechanistic paradigm has had its day, for like, e.g., Steven Pinker, you don't see the need to even read the many contributions to peer reviewed journals that clearly contradict your paradigm which you erroneously regard as fact. Now, in common with all those of your ilk, you dismiss any experimental evidence that does not fit in with your model/paradigm. So, far from avoiding your question, I suggest that you first admit that materialism is simply an assumption. For instance, that the mind is merely an epiphenomenon of brain function is just that - an assumption. And an unwarranted assumption at that.
@@timothytannerandtheamazing5054 You seem to be chastising me for assuming things but you're the one guilty of it, not I. You assume that I haven't read any materials challenging/supporting materialism because if I had, I'd change my mind? That is utterly absurd. You mention experimental evidence. Care to share?
Interesting that Gould remarks that he's 'not at all inclined to write large-scale philosophical books'. Just as well since he was not qualified to do so, for he was not a philosopher!
You seriously think a man of his intellect would waste his time on philosophy? His justification is that it would be a pompous waste of time was spot on.
Clearly, although Gould was good with the details of his own sub-discipline, he lacked any capacity for holistic thinking or looking at the big picture - almost autistic! Moreover, he doesn't seem to have been a pleasant chap to interview! Stephen, may you RIP 🙏
Although certain interlocutors were clearly reductive, mechanistic, closed-minded blockheads, this was nonetheless a fascinating dialogue thanks to the intellectual fortitude displayed by Rupert Sheldrake.
