Life isn't measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away.

Welcome to the Pipes Hikes channel, mainly featuring hikes done by me, Anthony Pipes. The majority of my hikes are done in the Peak District, often with my mum.

There's a link in the description of all my videos to a map, on the OS Maps website should you want to try the route out for yourself. You can also find my routes on my Facebook page called Peak District Routes, search on Facebook for @PDRoutes

You can also now follow me on Instagram, search for pipes.hikes and/or on Strava, search for Anthony Pipes.

Videos of my walks are available for all to view, though they were initially meant for mum and I to remember our outings. If you have tuned in I guess you are likely a walker yourself, so hopefully you will enjoy and maybe be inspired to tempt some of the routes.

Happy hiking!

Hi, just a quick question, Id like to try the route where you walked along the a57, did you turn right after crossing the bridge and joining the road? or turn left? as the video seems as though you turned left before you found the hill that leads up to crook hill, cheers

There is an even better gulley scramble along this route. Approx 1.5km beyond Golden Clough at the junction of Grinds Brook with a small tributary on the right, follow this tributary upwards which leads you through boulders, across a small pool and a short scramble at the head of the pool. It is possible to bypass this on either side of the gulley. Great fun though after rain. It is also unspoiled ie”improved” and much quieter, in 27yrs I have yet to meet anyone else on this section.

@@mintymilkk Ah glad to hear the fridge is back. It came on very handy on my first crossing on a hot draining day. I guess not so necessary after Church Holme opened up their tuck shop a few miles prior but still nice to know it’s back. Lovely to see this. We did it in 2023 but the other way round. We ascended High Wheeldon the same side as yourself but descended on the Western side , which turned out to be ridiculously steep and required semi sliding down a section near the base as my 6 feet 2 inch height produces too high a centre of gravity to do otherwise. It was pretty hard on the knees! Great walk though, and fantastic views. I love the contrast between the landscapes of the White Peak and the Dark Peak. I wonder if Wolfscote Hill is accessible now? I thought the views from that were particularly beautiful and wouldn’t mind a revisit - Wolfscote Dale is one of my favourite dales!
@pipes-hikes
@pipes-hikes 5 месяцев назад
I did this walk in 2019 (same way round as this time) and I climbed up the western side that time so trust me, I know just how steep it is 🤣It about broke me... hence me going around it this time haha. But yes I agree, the views are awesome. Not sure on Wolfscote Hill I'm afraid, I think I read it was still shut until a path is sorted but not 100% on that. I don't think I've ever actually been to that trig. I have been through Wolfscote Dale but not for a good few years so I too am probably due a revisit.

@pipes-hikes
@pipes-hikes 6 месяцев назад
Hi Sarra, it was 17th June last year. I saw nobody else on the CMD arête. If you are confident in navigating, have done plenty of hill/mountain walks and don’t have a fear of heights/ridge walking, then no reason why you couldn’t undertake it in my opinion. Certainly more peaceful than the tourist path will be. Obviously I have no idea of your experience in the mountains. I had great weather in the week I was in Scotland, it’s not all that often that the weather is that kind up there, more often than not there is cloud and wind (or worse) to contend with. Plan wisely x

@pipes-hikes
@pipes-hikes 7 месяцев назад
I used to use a GPS device but now have a Garmin Fenix 6 Pro watch on which you can add maps (using a GPX file just like a GPS does). So I plot the route on OS Maps, then export the GPX file from their app, to the Garmin Explore app, which then syncs it to my watch. I do always carry a map and compass too just in case the watch fails though it hasn’t yet.
