Honestly, I think Zuko and Azula were poorly written in this season. For Zuko, the anime always depicted him full of absolute, raw, uncontrollable rage. The amount of times he said "I need to restore my honor" and said it with anger is why he is originally depicted as a villain and only as a villain. We didn't really start seeing a more compassionate Zuko until book 2, and the rage started turning into humility. So I'm disappointed that Netflix tried to make him so likable and timid, because that's not what book 1 Zuko was, he should've been more angry, more spiteful. It ultimately was Iroh that would hold him back from his uncontrollable rage and I feel like we didn't get to see that. As for Azula, we only get glimpses into her character this season but the one thing I couldn't get over is that she was also very timid. In the anime, she had the most devilish smile, a witty personality. But in the live action she didn't once devilishly grin. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but the reason why Azula was such a likable villain was because she was and insane witty psychopath. I feel like we didn't get to see even a hint of that this season.
I’m just genuinely so happy you created this video. It put all of my own shared criticisms with the show in one spot so I can now link it to anyone who is glazing the live action like it’s a cinnamon roll
I know he wont do this but I wish Drew would go over the netflix One Piece live-action adaptation. I assume he doesn't watch One Piece so that why. However I would have loved his commentary on how that live-action adaptation stood out among the rest and in my opinion did what most people hope for with a live-action adaptation
sokka grew up in a hunter gather tribe where men were expected to protect the women and children. Sokka only acted that way because their mom was killed and their dad left for the war. So he’s desperately trying to be the man his father is but he’s insecure and knows he’s can’t be. And he shouldn’t. He’s a child. Also water bending was forbidden in his tribe due to the fear it could result in the fire nation raiding them. So his flippant attitude towards Katara at the start of the story actually makes sense. Finally, Sokka literally crawls back on his knees and begs the Kyoshi warriors to train him. That’s actual humility and growth. Sokka was never a “sexist” in the way modern activist writers believe. He’s a child who is being forced into an adult role and literally doesn’t know any better. Also when reality proves him wrong he takes his Ls and learns from them. The fact they don’t understand this shows they are blinded with activism brain rot.
am I the only one that just watched it without thinking so much about it?? and I actually really liked it, ofc no remake can top the original, but this was good also...
Never watched the original because I was 15 when it came out I think, so action cartoons or shonen animes were not my thing anymore. But we got to understand that they don't have as much time (in terms of lenght of the show) as the original run of the cartoon had. That said, and having watched half of the Netflix show and now your video, I agree that some things could have been handled better. Aang dialogues are pretty bad in general.
I’m sorry, but the scene of Azula watching Zuko get beat in the original Agni Kai is pretty on-brand for siblings. I know for a fact that I’m always a bit too happy whenever my dad is yelling at my older sister for whatever stupid/mean thing she’s done/said; I know Zuko had a different outcome, but still.
Let me get this straight; Netflix decided to take away Sokka's sexism which he overcomes by meeting a badass woman By treating the badass woman as a sexual character 😂 as if its not sexist to reduce a woman to her sexuality
The writers of Netflix thought that the content of a show made for CHILDREN was too difficult for ADULTS to comprehend.... At this point I am seriously questioning the IQ of the people working at Netflix and hollywood as a whole. They should all go back to highschool, because they don't understand most of the basic stuff that a 12 year old should know and understand. I understand why the original creators left. There's no point talking to stupid people.
Saw this quote somewhere about the original show and I think it's great: "The hero's journey begins with an act of selfishness and the villian's journey begins with an act of selflessness"
Netflix loves long shows with a ton of seasons so I’m genuinely surprised they didn’t milk it way more and explore topics that the animated version couldn’t
I think for me this brings up a conversation of why cartoons need a live action version to be considered a "valid" or "real" piece of art rather than than the cartoon standing up on its own merits and flaws. If there needed to be a "newer" version I feel then that it should have been a remaster or re-imagining with better animation technology, some reworked/expanded plotlines/character arcs for a more effective story, and new high definition voice acting. Not to bring up the cursed Nostalogical Reviewer after everything that went down with him and that company, but he did have an actual good take that there was a perfect adaptation of the Last Airbender story and it was the cartoon itself.
18:39 Netflix ruined Katara the EXACT same way Disney ruined Mulan. I will always be mad about this. These are my childhood heroes. Their stories are inspiring BECAUSE they taught me that you don’t have to be a superhero to overcome. You can BECOME a hero by using your wits, your empathy, hard work, team work, and never giving up, even in the darkest moments. Now their entire arc is “just accept that you are already better than everyone. That is what unlocks your true power.” ARE YOU KIDDING MEEE??? 🤬
You definitely nailed this one. One small thing though: I really don’t think they’re doing a good job with Zuko’s character. I’ll admit I only watched the first two episodes and there seems to be a lot of inconsistency, so maybe they fixed it in later episodes. The big problem I saw was Zuko’s fixation on “the throne” rather than “regaining his honor.” It’s a subtle change, but Zuko’s honor is a stand-in for the love and approval he wants from his father in the absence of his mother. And it’s important for Book 3 specifically because Zuko has to get what he wanted in order for him to realize it’s not actually what he wants. If his arc is suppose to narrow down to “I want the throne” then his redemption will come across hollow because we know that he ultimately becomes Firelord anyways. I know Zuko’s honor became such a meme (and that’s probably why the writers changed it), but the subtext of Zuko’s honor is the most important part of his character.
I watched the whole first season of the live action. Realized everything that was said in this video and just started the animated series over again. Lol I really did not like the live action because of the lack of story and character development as well as the disjointed storyline. The only reason I had any idea of what was going on sometimes was because I have already watched the animated version probably 10 times through. 🤷♂️
The Netflix adaptation can only be described as forgettable. Wasn't good enough to rewatch or care about, wasn't bad enough to hate on for 10+ years like TLA. Watched it once and that's enough, might catch the other seasons but I'm not looking forward to them.
You know what sucks too? Is that actors/actresses from what I've seen are literal incarnations of the OG cartoon. Like they're so alike from the original characters it's a treat to see but were screwed over because of the writing.
This video sounds a lot like someone just trying to capitalize on all the troglodyte rage that adaptations always produce.. 30min of "this isn't the show, I hate this!" with no thought given to how screenwriter are supposed to adapt super lengthy animated series into a digestible show that's meant for both the OG fans but also new audiences aka children. Like .. bro. I thought you were above regurgitating boring interpretations of Reddit/Twitter complaining, but you've enshrined it instead. Totally missed how this is basically a PG-13 show, again, meant for kids AND adults. You really trying to convince me that a show that shows skeletons, wont show immolation, won't show gore, and won't show someone being straight up killed is somehow a show for adults? And oh no, the story beats were changed, the *gall* of these screenwriters making an *adaptation*. Surface level analysis dressed up in 30min of rage bait with an add for a browser that is basically spyware. Unfortunate.
The poison would have made sense to be thallium. A serial killer was putting it in his fams food and they all came down ill before his step-mum died off it.
what if they're pulling a cokacola and releasing shit so they can later release what they wanted to and say "see, we listen. we can improve!" in order to get real life growth brownie points?
