Our Outback can do that too, but we snow throw our driveway. Last January (2022), it met its match. We got 3 feet in 10 hours and had 2 feet on the ground before the storm came. Needless to say, we had to use the snow thrower to get out of our driveway. Then we had to plow our private road to the county road.
Then onceon paved icy roads any standard FWD will be much safer if equipped with proper winter tires like X-Ice or Blizzak. I took my 2008 Sienna with Blizzak WS90 out with my friend in his brand new at the time 2019 I think Subaru Accent. We tested side by side acceleration, braking. The AWD of course is great but my FWD standard family van with those tires were only a hair slower on the get up. Braking my van destroyed the Accent. I wanted to test my bias with winter tires vs AWD on stocks. I confirmed winter tires even on FWD is a far better winter driving solution if you are staying on paved roads. Off road of course I would take something like the Subaru with stocks in muddy/snowy offroad. But proper tires turns regular vehicles into winter road worthy machines that can out brake everyone without similar tires.
Having owned two Subaru's in Alaska, both with high miles. I can state they, at least the older ones pre-CVT were beats, especially with manual transmissions. Those two Subaru's went places larger and heavier vehicles couldn't fit or muster due to weight. Fantastic vehicles! I have always wanted a Honda Element and that is what I am looking for now, one with AWD and manual, but recently have thought about just buying a new Crosstrek with manual, maybe even a CVT since my wife can no longer drive manual due to her medical. Though, she likely wont be driving much more than a few years anyways, sadly.
I have a 2022 crosstrek limited automatic ,i need it living in north Dakota. I love it !! Honestly the best vehicle a person can have ,it can go almost anywhere and its sporty, easy to handle, has all the gadgets, safety, and gets good gas mileage. I highly recommend it ,they dont make a manual in the limited option though
You know you can do this with every model of Subaru with standard street tires. I love my Forester and it's fun when you can take off from a ski resort anytime you want while others are checking road conditions. Best cars I've ever had .
They don't stop or corner any better then any other similar vehicle with the same tires. The great AWD system on the Subaru only helps you go which is why I see so many of them in the ditch. Over confidence on a overly marketed AWD system. My past Subaru Outback once paired with Blizzaks was a well rounded winter tool.
The Outback was my last car. Had to downsize for financial reasons, although the Impreza hatchback I now have is great to drive. Just not off road though ! I miss that car. Extremely capable.
Shit even the legacy with it's absolute semetrical design plows thru unimaginable amounts of snow for any mid size sedan. It's almost unanticipated success; you expect to get stuck, but u have power that only a Subaru can offer lololol
