The New School at Commonweal is a community of inquiry exploring topics in health, the arts and sciences, the environment, and the inner life. We present conversations, book readings, performances, art shows, and other events with thought and action leaders who are changing our world. The events, more than 300 since 2007, are recorded and then offered as podcasts and videos on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Spotify, RU-vid, Amazon Music, and our website. Most of our events are offered free of charge as gifts to the Commonweal community-and you are part of it-giving forward into a circle of generosity.
I rewatched those panels so many times. It is such a precious tool to study the types. For this panel of 2s, it's so interesting to see this many people with a lot of innerwork behind them. As Beatrice mentioned, a good group of healthy 2s! Thank you all for sharing. And thank you for your humility/vulnerability. I have learned a lot today. Again.
"...as crazy and batsh!t upside down, topsy turvy as things get, it's helpful to have people who are calm and clear and fearless who can call things out for what they are." ~Peter Coyote @41:12 Word! Thanks for being one of them, Peter. Marvelous episode. I found the poem with the goldfinch poignant and moving. <3
From where do such loons liars and conmen get the asinine idea that the enneagram could possibly have anything to do with what they call” personality types”? It...... does...... *Not
We are to progress and liberate ourselves to consciously shed the physical (the elemental), and the causal, or the idea body. We are not destined to be embedded with A.I., no matter what the atheistic perspective is currently. We are to liberate ourselves from the influence of the planets to fully realize consciousness. We are to progress to be angelic, shedding our outer bodies and, if desired, melding ourselves with the whole which is Cosmic Consciousness. All nature looks to us as the apex to which it aspires, first to human embodiment, and eventually to freedom from all embodiments.
From where do the scoundrels and conmen that have the absurd idea that the enneagram has anything whatsoever to do with what they call" personality types" *get* that completely asinine idea? It is complete nonsense, and a contemporary version of tealeaf reading- superstitious mumbo jumbo. The Enneagram is simply a symbol of the law governing he-line-of-the-flow-of-forces-constantly-deflectingaccording-to-law-and-uniting-again-at-its-endswhich has*Absolutely_Nothing*to do with what sundry dealers in monkey businesses(let us just call them charlatans) call " personality types" How one wonders could even the most dedicated maker of butter from extract from the law governing he-line-of-the-flow-of-forces-constantly-deflectingaccording-to-law-and-uniting-again-at-its-ends anything whatsover to do with whatever nonsense so-called " personality types" may be? One can only suppose that the criminal desire to separate the credulous and gullible from their gelt earned by the sweat of their brows can be a source of considerable criminal ingenuity, which beats earning on'e bread by means of what Giorgivanic would call honourable sweat labour by a country mile. Enneagram personality types my arse! Trickery and monkey business more like.
From where do these loons get the queer idea that the enneagram had anything wheresoever to do with what they call" personality types? It doesn't, but some how or other various scoundrels and charlatans have managed to invent some monkey business out of it to line their pockets, and exploit t the credulous and gullible that fall for that sort of criminal invention
Had to chuckle at Jacob's initial difficulty understanding Lord Pentland. I had jumped at the chance of getting a copy of Exchanges Within, consisting of questions and and answers over several decades from the West Coast groups and LP. Imagine my dismay at finding the same puzzling barrier. After some time and much personal reorientation, a small breakthrough appeared and has continued to progress and even broaden. But it also becomes clearer that even when the "how" is known, that only means the work is just beginning. Thanks for the company!
Wow I am so happy to have heard dr. Turners near death experience. I now want to think back into the childhood traumatic events and dreams of my own. Thankyou so much.
Order, connection, creativity, change is a good way to structure getting to know a new class as a teacher. Teachers are leaders. Thank you for that reinforcement. Sometimes I forget to provide order and I jump right to connection. Creating order is difficult to do in a way that is consensual and relevant. However, if change to the order is part of the model, that makes it more just I would say
It is humbling, encouraging and motivating to listen to this conversation, I mean the whole of it. I am certain Living Ancestor doesn't know how much impact his life, sacrifice and work have had on humanity. His poetry workshop was a wake up call for me and because of him, my pen found purpose. Living Ancestor is the person who taught me how to use poetry to heal and recover from my trauma. How to use poetry to build resilience and thrive on hope. Living Ancestor is the one who taught me how to use poetry as a tool to drive change. His work touches every facet of life.
Thank you both so much. I related to every sentence, & the divine sacred earth- rooted, love infused poems. This quiet, cosmos-huge hero is what God made humans to be. We forgot. Aristotle's ethics, Black Elk's sacred tree, Jesus's sermon on the mt plus life example, the Hebrew prophets, all conveyed what he lives. May i amend my life to be more like his. Amen.
I keep remembering this poem by e. e. cummings: now does our world descend now does our world descend the path to nothingness (cruel now cancels kind; friends turn to enemies) therefore lament,my dream and don a doer's doom create is now contrive; imagined, merely know (freedom:what makes a slave) therefore,my life, lie down and more by most endure all that you never were hide, poor dishonoured mind who thought yourself so wise; and much could understand concerning no and yes: if they've become the same it's time you unbecame where climbing was and bright is darkness and to fall (now wrong's the only right since brave are cowards all) therefore despair,my heart and die into the dirt but from this endless end of briefer each our bliss- where seeing eyes go blind (where lips forget to kiss) where everything's nothing -arise,my soul;and sing
Creeping on 9 content because I love 9’s IRL ❤☺️ I also love 7’s. As a 4w5 it’s like a 10,000 page Dostoevsky novel with a funeral dirge for background music in my head 🤣 plus I’m an SP. So I like to soak up the sunshine from these types 🌞 😂
1:18:13 - self-pres- more perfectionistic (warmth/annoyance/frustration/anger- most self-critical), social one is perfect (both), sexual one is perfecting others (heat/ annoyance/frustration/anger- least self-critical, interested in correcting others.)
Can I ask, what do you all look for in therapy/ in a therapist? I relate most with social, I think, and I’ve had some therapists so strongly mirror and reinforce my complaining that I’ve ended relationships,..now I’m learning to stop the therapy. The last one was even trained in the enneagram. Just curious, how do you go about explaining your patterns, or are there certain therapy modalities or philosophies you look for that help them understand how to help, without getting bogged deeper in moody moodiness?
I agree 100% with her view on death and ending life before its natural course. But most people are driven by fear. I think it’s a very spiritually strong person that rides the active death process. Death is like childbirth. It may be painful but once it’s over the pain is gone… and only love is present. I want to feel and communicate with my God all through the dying process. I was at my father’s death bed and it was the most incredible moment of my life… only thing that compares was birthing my son.
I live in NYC and the Chinese medicinal doctors are too expensive. I was quoted $2k a month for a liquid that I would have to drink daily. Would love to add this to my protocol but too much. This is a big problem for patients who would like to add CTM. Affordability needs to be discussed.
11:32: "the scapegoating parent was seen by the child in a way that the parent knew he was finally seen, and he would do everything to make sure the child suffered to the same degree that being seen affected him."
Woman talks more like 6w5 than 5. She constantly talks about her feelings and doesnt focus on data when she’s speaking. Doesn’t talk in depth and detail about ideas. The push pull she describes is typical 6 behavior. Pushing and pulling is too energy draining for a 5. We don’t push people away hoping to be found. That’s irrational. We push people away hoping they don’t find us. There is a lot of incongruence in her speaking. However, I don’t deny there is a 5 element to her. Valuing competence doesn’t mean you’re in the Enneagram competency group. Our society values competence. She didn’t express an endless curiosity fundamental to being a type 5. Competence is used as a means to security for loyalists and many others.
I love that the guy on the far left embraces his sexual instinct. He talks to the group as if he’s talking one on one. He shares most intimately. He speaks as if we know him already and he knows us. That’s how I am as well. I also need special one on one time with partner to recharge. He’s a 9. And we both enjoy being alone together. Glad you were present sir. You are a wonderful human being.
K sorry to be a pain, but i don't see the 2nd man as SP 2. Beatrice herself says in her book that SP 2's are child-like and try to be cute to get help instead of actually helping. I don't see any attempt in him to come across as cute or helpless, or to attract help. My mom is a sp 2 and she can't wait to be in a nursing home so she can have people dote on her. She talks with a child-like voice and loves it when people call her cute.
I just wrote in my journal this morning "who am I?" Now surprised about what I'd just discovered Here. I've been in practice with the Enneagram for 25 years....and just now at 78, I really don't know who I am????This is a gut OH NO! It is so confusing at this moment to see this AND I know that it is also a new awakening. It is overwhelming to think of walking into a room and actually KNOW BEFORE MEETING ANYONE. I don't even know where to start??? REALLY. Maybe the reason I'm always a little nervouswhen I meet new people. YIKES I am so grateful that I have a strong spiritual practice so this "I" doesn't fall apart...It is like one of those Russian dolls you open up and find a smaller doll inside the bigger one and on down to a tiny core doll. As I write I'm needing to express this, even though no one will read it because this is a 4 year old video. I'm using this space in LIVE SELF-discovery. Below is Anna Sanders saying she wasn't going to cry. I didn't get past the first man's sharing. But I've finally learned that my tears are actually tears of joy when I hear or see the truth. Below is Dan Dee, No I do not realize my strength or my being a comfort to others. Then as I continue to write, it is as if something is unraveling. It explains what I wrote to Kristin Fries below. I met a Navajo painter/healer and my "habit" didn't work, because the subconscious had to admit he didn't need anything!!! HOLY COW! I am surprised by this unraveling, like pealing off my skin is not painful. Instead, it is exciting to realize there is no self....this is what the Buddha taught. On the other hand, what is life like knowing who you are? In deepest gratetude to this space which greated so much space in the confusion. LOVE is all there is! 🙏❤
