Welcome! If you want to hear sound demos of different synths, this is the place!

I started doing sound demo videos on YT in 2022, since I felt it was the main thing that interested me, when I'm looking around for some old synth to test. I did not care so much for fancy videos, I only wanted to hear what it sounded like in stereo sound. Started with demoing the Roland Jupiter-Xm, when the new OS version 3 was released in April 2022, and at the same time that helped me discover that synth, which ended up being part of my live rig set. Here we are 2 years later, still posting sound demo videos of different synths and modules. And still occasionally trying to figure out where I'm going with this channel. :-)

Thanks for watching and following!

Hi, thank you for the demo. Maybe mic it better next time or run it into a DAW. I can tell it’s a great sounding synth, but between YT compression and what I pointed out, it’s very hard to know the true extent of what it can do.. 👍🏻👍🏻 Have you played an Oberheim OB-X8? If so, how do you think that it compares?
@patsonmusic
@patsonmusic 2 дня назад
Thanks for watching! No, I haven't played the OB-X8, but it would be nice to try that out! I'm actually not that interested in how a synth compares to the one it is based on, I'm more interested in how it sounds, what I can do with it, if it triggers my inspiration and makes me wanna play it more. My first impressions of UB-Xa are good and it is a beast I still have to learn to tame. I'm not using mics, only for the occasional talk. I'm running the synths through a mixer and to a Roland Go Mixer Pro-X connected to my mobile phone, keeping it simple by only using the mobile phone camera, one, not many. In this way I can easily start recording and later cut out the video down to smaller pieces with minimal editing. Again the reason for this is to just play and not waste time on making it look fancy, since there are many other channels for that. I also so far played synth I've acquired myself 🙂

its like the sound design team got together and thought.. what are the WORST sounding patches we can make for this synth? ...it has a great sound but factory patches are designed by absolute orangutans. The worst ive ever heard. not knocking ur video at all.. just a observation on the actual factory sounds this thing comes with
@patsonmusic
@patsonmusic День назад
Yes, I can't disagree with your statement. Many factory sounds are just over the top and I feel I have to adjust filters, LFO and modulation for every sound I play. Many sounds are very alike, too. Bank B with patches by the Synth King is better than Bank A. Anyway, I think Behringer could have provided one bank of great sounds and left the other banks empty for the user. Thanks for watching! ☺

@@patsonmusic yeah , honestly .. .Behringer always do this, their patches are always terrible. @patsonmusic

@@Pieces_Of_History2 I take it that you didn't like the first half of Bank B either then? I think there were some great sounds there, but also a lot of repetitive sounds with only minor adjustments. I also have to Pro-800 and I think the idea of the first bank there was to recreate the original sounds from the Prophet-600. For nostalgic reasons maybe nice, but I would have appreciated more new sounds. On the other hand the Pro-800 is very straightforward and nice to make your own sounds.

hey dude im curious, I have a Roland JU-06A right now and want to sell it and get the pro 800. do they over lap enough in terms of sound to not need both?
@patsonmusic
@patsonmusic 6 дней назад
Somewhat overlapping, but the Pro-800 with it's two oscillators and two envelopes is more flexible. JU-06A is hard to beat for nice pads, but the drawback is 4-voice polyphony so you really have to think how you play it to avoid cut notes. As you know 800 is 8-voice. 800 has a rawer sound. I think I would choose the 800 if I had to choose only one of them, but I like them both a lot. Good to keep in mind that the 800 has no effects at all, where the JU has delay and chorus. I will keep both mine.

Well, the UB-Xa has a very good basic sound, I think. I don't see the lack of onboard FXs as too bad, of course it would have been nice, but it is so easy to add an external effects pedal or pedalboard and suddenly you have a lot more (and better options than any build-in FXs) to work with. @infestedalien
@infestedalien Месяц назад
@@patsonmusic I realize that everyone looks at different key-features or what to call it. I am an owner of an OB-6 and that was just a lucky timing that I bought it in early years before the inflation else It would have been very unlikely that I chosen it for what it cost today. I think for me I look for the following features first of all and that is a clean interface and if possible an advanced modulation matrix. The OB6 is more of a pure tone with some modulation but at cost of limitations but that is not a problem since it's impossible to get more complex modulation without affecting the "raw tone" of the analogue signal path since it would require some work-arounds when we cannot lay down too many CV routes in a "pure analogue" way. However when it comes to analogue it's not always as easy as to think of it to be black or white there are some greyzones as well. Ok so here is my conclusion. I want to have a TEO-5 also for the reason to have a oberheim machine that offers a complex mod matrix but this do affect it to be less "raw" but that is what I actually look for to add up more colors to the palette. What I love with the OB6 is that it's very clean and easy to work with and it's not over engineered. Have a nice day!

To make sure the pedal works and to hear it clearly I would first try the following chain: SE-02 -> Onward -> mixer. Then you would hear the full effect of the pedal. I've sometimes struggled with the sends & returns to set it up correctly, cause they tend to mix the dry (uneffected signal) with the wet (effected) signal and instead of hearing the pedal 100% you only hear it 50% or similar, depending how you much you send out of the channel to the aux return. To make it more confusing some mixers also have direct inserts and then you may use the same plug for both out and in (but this I haven't used myself and I think your mixer does not support inserts, so you don't need to think about that). @@patsonmusic today the D50 would surely be very expensive in the 1990s having the D20 and in addition a Yamaha was already a lot at 20 years old, we took used ones, new ones were rare and expensive have you seen the price of a Jupiter today?
@patsonmusic
@patsonmusic 3 месяца назад
@@studiodw12 Neither D-50 nor DX-7 are very expensive today, you can get them for 400-600€ even in pretty good shape. The Jupiters are very expensive and also expensive to maintain so I'm personally pretty happy with the newer versions, the Boutiques like JU-06a or JP-08, or Jupiter-X myself. I've had my D-50 since I bought it new in 1989. I also had a Juno-2 but sold it to get the D-50. I regretted selling it and bought a Juno-1 a few years ago, which is a great sounding synth!

We still have an old D-20 lying around. It does sound "crusty" compared to the D-50. That said, it had an 8 track built in sequencer and was handy for live gigging and programming keyboard parts if you were short a keyboard player.

Yes, they sound very different. The 8 track sequencer was a great feature. Sometimes I wounder why they didn't build it with the D-50 engine.

Can you not hear octaves or something?
@patsonmusic
@patsonmusic 4 месяца назад
Yes, can you? You probably noticed that many of the sounds are actually tuned an octave higher on the D-20 compared to the D-50. Why that's the case I don't know. I just played sounds with same or similar names on the synths, factory presets.
@RobertWrightOneManCovers
@RobertWrightOneManCovers 4 месяца назад
@@patsonmusic I ask because comparing sounds is pointless when you play them set to different octaves per synth, which you do here. I figured you must simply not hear the distinction.
@patsonmusic
@patsonmusic 4 месяца назад
@@RobertWrightOneManCovers I get your point, but I'm also dumping octaves all the time as you can see. But still factory sounds with similar names on D-20 and D-50 are not in the same octave as you can see from my fingers usually starting from the same place on the keybeds - and this was a little bit strange I have to admit. Anyway, factory sounds were not too great on the D-20, but I've heard people program some nice stuff on the D-20/10/110.

@@patsonmusic I'd just like to ask Roland why the D-70 was an overgrown D-20 instead of a fully featured flagship D-50. That seemed like a real wasted opportunity.
@patsonmusic
@patsonmusic 4 месяца назад
@@RobertWrightOneManCovers That's a good question, which I'm also curious about. To my knowledge, and I have no experience of the D-70, it was actually a U-series synth. Roland put out the U-110 (which I had and back then sounded pretty great, taking the PCM samples a step further, nowadays it sounds very dated). Then they put out the U-20 and U-220 and was apparently working on a U-50, but probably for marketing reasons renamed it to D-70, maybe the U-series were no hits. I heard it was a little buggy and very slow user interface, but I haven't played it myself. I have a U-220 I will try out at some point. Then thinking about the competition, both Korg and Yamaha started making multi-timbral synths like the D-20, so it seems they put all their efforts on the JV-stuff with the JV-80, 90, 1000, 1080, 2080 for multi-timbral synths and JD-800 for performance synth. Some say the JD-800 is the real follower of the D-50. I haven't played a JD-800 nor JD-990 , so I can't really say. JD-800 offered hands-on control which the D-50 lacked (but you could always get the PG-1000 programmer, if you had extra the money back in the day). Adding to this, Roland's naming policy is sometimes very fuzzy.

An analog synth will always sound pretty harsh itout a little time and or space added to them with delay or reverb, this will really add to any raw analog synth's potential. And of course you can go waaaay further with all knids of fx; phasor or roto/leslie style are a must in my opinion. I got a prophet 08 this year, so cool ! I used to have an evolver from those years i got brand new, i regret selling it sometimes, ireally like the DSI synths of that era, not ponly for they're sound and quality (kb on those are much better that the ones we have on these nowadays imo), but for that period in dave smith's profgessional history; one day i'de love to get a tempest...

Yes, the Prophet 08 is a wonderful instrument. It wasn't love at first sight for me, but now when I did the demo videos and started messing around with building sounds, it has really grown on me. I was on the fence, should I keep it or not, but not anymore - I will keep this! The Evolver seems like a very nice DSI synth, but I've never had the opportunity to play one.

What do you recommend as a rompler that one can use to build layers and tweak here and there to hit a sweet spot? I am torn between the jupiter xm, sh4d and a controller, or the fantom 06. I really enjoyed playing my JDXI because the sounds and patterns inspire song ideas that I can fully flesh out into songs. I mostly enjoy composing on the sofa or carpet. I think I can handle the fantom 06 or even fa06 on my lap since it is only about 12 lbs. I really enjoy melodic atmospheric and ambient patterns.
@patsonmusic
@patsonmusic 6 месяцев назад
Hi Mariano, if you want a really hands on tweaking synth with easily accessible layers, then I say Jupiter-Xm. It is light, small, portable, but is the full Jupiter-X. You have the different expansions (XV, JP-8, Juno-106, SH, RD, JX-8P and Jupiter-X's own engine), you have 4 layers + drums, which you can easily turn on or off when needed. And it has a built in speaker, which is ok for jamming in the sofa. The drawback, only 3 octaves and mini-keys, is something at least I can live with, since the mini-keys are pretty good (100 times better than the awful attachable keybed to the Roland boutique series). Now I haven't played the JD-Xi so I can't compare that keybed to the J-Xm. But for performance you can hook up an external controller to the J-Xm and play some or one of the four layers from the controller while having pads or lead from the J-Xm itself. For hands-on control, the Xm is more versatile than the FA-06/07 since on the latter you only have direct access to a few settings. No speakers in the FA. The FA contains partly the same sounds so there is some overlap with the Xm, but I feel soundwise the Xm is superior. Fantom-06 fixes the limited hands-on controls, since it has much more on the surface. I haven't tried the Fantom-06 so can't say much about the experience. I've looked at the SH-4D, but haven't tried it. I have the FA-07, Jupiter-Xm, MC-101, some boutiques, some older Rolands so I'm pretty covered when it comes to the Roland sounds. If I did not have any of those the SH-4d would be more interesting, now I feel it is not for me. Finally for playing in the lap, I think the Xm is the best because it is small. It is not too easy playing a 61-key synth in your lap, because it easily starts to wiggle, if you play high or low notes. Hopefully this helps!
@patsonmusic
@patsonmusic 6 месяцев назад
Adding to that, the FA has a pretty good basic sequencer for testing and laying out songs, the Xm and the Fantom-06 have only pattern sequencer and limited rhythm, TR-style sequences - if that is something for you to take into consideration.

@@MarianoPerez No problem, happy to share my view on these synths. Maybe my comment on the SH-4d was a little bit left up in the air. I actually went to check the specifications on that synth, and I would say that although the layout and setup resembles the Jupiter-Xm a lot (4+1 layers, effects), it is not as versatile as the Xm. It seems based on comments on reddit that SH does not offer the full models i.e. Juno-106, so if you want a better synth and all the 5-6 different models/engines go for the Xm in this case. I actually thought the SH-4d would have a similar models setup as the Xm, but since it doesn't I would not consider it for my use cases.

Sweet vid. But for real. It’s lame how many people wanna dog on the D-20. We get it, you love your synth. D-50’s are getting expensive. They both sound awesome. There are people who can play on micro key Casio’s and make them sound good. They can all sound good if you know how to play them and/or combine them with other gear. It’s fun to hear two synths of a similar technological era. Thank you for sharing
