I was in Dublin during 2008 and had a fleeting glance of these statues by Liffey River while traveling by bus. In their eyes, it's a mix of helplessness and horror of impending death. The dog following this procession is in a pathetic pose of begging. Near Natchez is an antebellum home, Springfield Plantation, where Andrew Jackson got married to (I think her name was) Rachael Donnelson and a duel was called over that. Seems Judge Donnelson withheld the divorce paperwork until after Rachael and Andrew were married and sullied her name as a Bigamist. This infuriated Andrew. I don't know if the duel ever took place since Andrew Jackson was running for political office at the time. So If you want to see how it was done in the South, Natchez is a library of touchable history. When the Union army "laid siege" to Vicksburg, that means they bombed the city for 47 days straight. The civilians of Vicksburg had to flee to caves under the embankment of the Mississippi River and many died of starvation. That's why Vicksburg finally surrendered. Grant's own men called him "The Butcher" and they didn't mean how he butchered civilians. They meant how he butchered his own men, sending them in to get slaughtered by the Confederates. Neither he nor Lincoln cared how many Union soldiers died. Lincoln wanted a general who could "do the arithmetic" and he found him in Grant. In contrast, General Lee surrendered his men because he knew they would starve otherwise. The men wanted to keep fighting.

As a southern black person I have never understood why ppl choose these homes for a wedding. A WEDDING, something so beautiful and pure in a place that caused much pain and suffering. Can someone explain please.
Gone with the wind got popular, and people wanted a wedding that resembles that film, at least that’s why most people that have antebellum weddings do it
Here's how I see it. After my divorce, my son didn't want to stay in my house because it brought back bad memories. I told him that the way to change that was to make new, good memories. And it worked! By having weddings and events, we're making new, positive memories. We're showing the slave owners that they didn't win. Americans came together and are making new, beautiful memories together. A place only has power if you allow it to have power over you. We're taking control and making it our own thing. As a black couple, I would absolutely want to get married here. What a pole in the eye it would be to the culture that enslaved my ancestors! Also, thank you for asking the question and not just attacking people you might not agree with. We need a lot more civil, rational people like you and me in this country.
