whats these companies don't understand is whistleblowers exist because of them not taking employee concerns seriously. If this did they wouldnt exist

It seems that *EVERYTHING* is getting more expensive … including aviation. At least with the airlines and airliner manufacturers, you can solve _many_ of the problems by throwing money at them. Alas, *_general aviation_* *CAN’T!* Speaking as a *former* GA pilot, as a hobby, it’s just too darn *EXPEN$IVE!* Small planes have a lot of things in common with automobiles, *EXCEPT* … you can take the price of any common auto part, try to buy the equivalent (FAA approved) part for a small plane, and you can usually just *add a zero* onto the right side of the price. Add to that the increasing burden of new regulations (as desirable as they might *SEEM)* and it’s too much for many of us to keep up with. Just the alphabet soup of airspace identifiers is something I’d need to relearn to re-enter the hobby. Back in the 1980s, we had Terminal Control Areas, Airport Traffic Areas, and that was pretty much it. Let alone trying to fly *single pilot* IFR! Then add the cost of GA flying, and it gets increasingly expensive to just to stay current, which is probably a major safety concern.

The issue with the Greek company reminded me of my own start as a software engineer. Company offered just a 1 year contract, with a negotiable unlimited contract once the year was up. Pay was meh. So I just worked that initial year. Got the experience and know how I needed. And when I was offered an extension of the contract, I told them to go F themselves and got a much better pay elsewhere. So the solution is simple. Instead of having the non-productive leeches in management lining their pockets, pay an attractive salary to your productive workers and do not give them just 1 year contracts. Or do not be surprised when they leave once the year is over.

Boeing is going to need to do something because Airbus is eating them alive. The 737 is a very old airframe and doesn't sit up high enough for modern engines. Composite airplanes don't seem to be the way of the future eather. My guess is they really need that NMA project.

A few observations about Stonecipher's tenure: 1. He defunded Boeing Recreation, leaving more than 100 clubs to fend for themselves 2. He closed Boeing Surplus, a much loved trove of old furniture and overstock consumables (I still have miles of wire & Velcro) 3. He got rid of the Travel department, leaving employees to buy their own tickets and lodging using a (yes!) GE credit card Not well liked by anyone as I recall

Boeing's 2000 engineering strike, largest white collar walkout in history, was brought on by Boeing's new VP of personnel--a former railroad guy who cut his teeth on striking RR workers. When it was determined that most DERs (Designated Engineering Representatives to the FAA) were on strike, Boeing couldn't deliver airplanes without their okay to minor production changes. The aftermath of the strike was an important change in how Boeing could certify changes--now management could also decide. And that had a significant change to how Boeing did business going forward.

Petter, Aviation is not the only field where expertise is being lost. Watch the political scene: Trump is an utter tyro in statesmanship; thinks he knows it all after a four-year apprenticeship. Mathematics: I have a niece who graduated Magna cum Laude in math; she won't even talk to me about math, though I coached her in it through Junior and Senior years. Auto mechanics: my mechanic is in his 50's, now, without any prospect of a replacement. Software design: old-time systems engineers have dropped out, retired, without replacements. Machining: almost nobody now remembers the ingenuity required to operate a lathe or mill the way the old-timers used to do; instead, it's training on CNC machinery. We have an explosion of data, with no corresponding increase in training. I went to work for Data General as a field engineer in 1976. They trained me for ten weeks on their equipment, with yearly increments of two weeks or more. Nobody gets training on the new equipment like that; instead it's just thrown out, and new stuff bought. The training industry has lost its middle. To learn a new software package takes months; but the training is not there. I got a private pilot's license in 1968; a little slow, with eleven hours to solo, 45 to cert. Pilot training, a life-and-death endeavor, is still thorough. What's not is passing mechanical knowledge and smarts on to following generations. People die without it, and business doesn't get properly done. I don't know what the hell we can do about it. I just hope somebody twigs to the fact that expertise is being lost, and must be maintained. Hope also that you will keep hammering on this subject.

Well, it seems like Boeing's top priority is to give a record 33 Billion pay package to Calhoun, trying to restore his trust in the company. Because Calhoun's trust will be very important up to the point he retires. Talk about a good investment.

1. I’m usually dubious about conspiracy theories, but 2 dead whistleblowers in 3 months? Something is afoot. 2. Who’s going to disassemble entire jet liners to remove the left behind tools, rags, and trash? Do we have to wait until the jets disassemble themselves mid flight for this problem to be addressed? This is why I hate flying.

Boeing’s culture problem is one exemplar of the moral bankruptcy in America’s corporations. It is less expensive to purchase protection from politicians than it is to do the right thing. It’s not that corporations have ever been high achievers in the fields of ethics, integrity, and morality. Corporations promote the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance). Scratch the surface and most of it is carefully crafted BS. Carbon offsets? Dozens of corporations paying a pittance each to protect Saharan rainforests. Governance? Any insider that logs into quarterly earnings calls knows that CEO’s tell all kinds of lies that aren’t explicitly prohibited by legislation such as Sarbanes-Oxley. Social? This may be only one that works somewhat. Turns out that diverse workforces are more productive and have better retention than monochromatic ones. If it were the opposite, corporations would hire lobbyists to bring back Jim Crow, repeal Women’s Suffrage, and such.

IMHO, *truth* is the glue that makes our civilization possible. The issue is whether suppression of truth should ever be allowed when the truth reveals a crime or a danger. Our conditioning into acceptance of corruption, be it through "do not snitch" contracts, implicit threats, loyalty to the "crime boss", etc., undermine our morality and prosperity. Thank you for standing up for the moral heroes who help make our lives safe and our endeavors flourish!

There are jobs that can be done in a "mid to mediocre way" and that has very little consequences. Funnily, there are more jobs like that than jobs where excellence is required. The issue with excellence, is that it has a cost (salary), it has a learning cost (training), and it has to invole pride and dedication from workers, and a very good communication line and trust from a competent top management... Do you start to see what's wrong with our current society & excellence ? Kids needs instant gratification, manual jobs that needs excellence tends to be looked down "oh a manual worker... how dare you... not a shiny job, a job where you may get your hands dirty..." You climb companies ladders by how well you lick asses, and not by how well you do your job anymore, that's the sad reality check of today's mentality. If you do your job too well compared to one of your "just above" superior, you may be stepped over and pressured to not do it as well as that, etc, etc. Just pick any of today's issues, and you'll start to realise that today it's Boing, tomorrow will be that next big chemical company with a terrible accident on a manufacturing plant, and lethal thread to nearby population and flora / fauna. Honnestly, I'm not overly positive for our upcoming future... As far as job goes, fortunately I have a job that doesn't require top excellence (and yet I do it at the best quality I can do) and have a good management line. Very rare, and funnilly on a very frownd upon job, that I'm very glad and very happy to have.

Business managers should have *zero authority* over designers, builders, and inspectors of aircraft. Business managers who lack the know-how to design and build aircraft are the bosses of technical experts? Corporate officials', the MBAs and corporate officers' jobs are to maximize profitability of their business, but profitability and safety almost always contradict in aviation. At the business end, the worst undesirable result is loss of profit, reduction in year end bonuses, and at the very worst, filing for bankruptcy, basically a setback in their career. In the 'real world" of aviation, unsuccessful endeavors result in death. The MBAs lack a grounding in physical reality, consequences, and so do the shareholders. Investigative reporters have highlighted the effect of business consulting groups, such as McKinsey that have recommended many business practices leading to poverty of workers, layoffs, denial of healthcare, etc. I wonder if Boeing was advised by such consultants to cut various corners in the name of short term profit?

Ignoring Comac, although fitting in with Western hate-mongering, is making a serious mistake just as ignoring Chinese car manufacturing, especially by Japan , has been a serious mistake. After the genocide supporting NATO countries hate-mongering against Russia fades away Russia's Sukhoi aircarft will inevitably become a major player in a world that is already moving away from the collapsing American Empire and its NATO vassals.

I worked for Air Force pilots who fly the KC-135 refuelers, which is based off the 707 airframe. They swear by it, even today (05/2024), and wish the government would just upgrade the plane instead of building a new one. Most them do not look forward to the KC-46, which of course Boeing is building. Too many defects and design flaws. They are even finding tools and debris left in the walls of the airframe. Of course, we have John McCain to blame for that fiasco. If he hadn't gotten involved, negated the legally negotiated award contract to AirBus, and got it switched to Boeing instead, I and many pilots doubt there would be much concern about the next generation tanker. Now they do, and many will retire before flying that plane.

In my life time I've seen the value of the dollar drop to half what it was when I was a kid in the 90s. Back then, round trip airfare from Entebbe to Seattle was around $2000 per person. In 2016, I had the same itinerary for $1800, with the value of the dollar being half what it was then. This means that between 1993 and 2016, airline ticket prices were cut in half. It's a wonder that airlines can stay in business.
