My channel is dedicated to coaching and running the Double Wing and Shotgun Double Wing Offensive system. I have been coaching Youth Football since 2010 and adopted the DW/SGDW in 2012. This offense has given me many years of personal enjoyment as I have seen my own abilities to coach the system increase. Join me here for updates on coaching this great offense as well as chalk talk videos and highlights of teams that I have coached. My new DW/SGDW coaching guide will be available for purchase soon as I complete my entire playbook. Stay tuned for updates on this channel!!!!
If you want to see this system run at the highest level probably possible look up Bellville vs Gilmer Texas 4A D2 State Championship. They throw the ball 5 times a game maybe and let me tell you what they were super tuff.
For sure. There are some great high school programs that run it for sure. I am lucky enough to live near Concord where Coach Tim Murphy coaches the Clayton Valley Ugly Eagles. Shotgun DW team. That is crazy good.
I have coached tiny mites for 3 years. I have ran a scaled down version of DW. We’re moving up to 8 u this year I think backside pulling is capable at this age . We have had great success in our region( mid-south) pop Warner. Looking forward to expanding more of the playbook.
@nicksalzman5850 I appreciate that coach. I want all my coaches to be just as successful as I have been with this. And I think the BLOCKING and the application of these plays live will make the difference. Thanks again!!!!
Well technically yes. The Nose Tackle they had ended up playing at Oregon State as a center and he’s a beast. So I think they thought widening out their DTs would work against me. It didn’t work. As soon as I saw their wide DT alignment I knew power and wedge would go great. And it did. I stuck to mostly inside running. They gave me the look I actually wanted. They are in a 5-3 it’s just a very wide 5-3. Lmao
@@hunterschmidt560 yeah I used to coach as an assistant with the opposing head coach. I knew his weaknesses and how he’d align his DEs. His defensive ends had little speed so he’d align them wide to cover the discrepancy and funnel all runs to the inside where he had two future D1 college athletes playing. His NT and his MLB were studs.
I run Hugh Wyatt’s double wing but I have read Calande’s book because a friend was running his DW. I love how you explain things. It’s not what we know, it’s what we can teach the kids. I’m in Massachusetts, love your Brady shirt! I also run a few spread plays so I broke rule 5! lol
It is exactly what you can effectively teach. That’s our challenge as coaches. Wyatt does a lot of stuff I like. I’m originally from Rhode Island so I’m a lifetime pats fan. Some teams choose to have a few spread plays just to pass. But I find my play action passes from DTDW or gun worked just as well. They look like runs but bam….. over the top on them. Lol
Because if u pull G/T you have to cut the B-C gap with the TE. I was tired of getting called for high low blocks if the center blocks down. Also my TEs are much more athletic and mobile than my tackles. So the choice was easy.
I now primarily GATE pull for mostly all my power counter and sweep plays. And I have my backside Tackles get good at fast inside reach Blocks to seal the b gap solid. I tell my TEs to pull with authority. Cause they are last man distance wise to the POA.
That’s actually not a Trojan. That’s a laser out 15 counter. It’s a called keep. I send the wing flowing out with fast motion and belly ride him while he keeps his eyes on the called 5 man (LT). It’s almost always wide as a bus when the lbs flow too fast to the fake.
Coach on your 34 power instead of putting the wing on to move the end out do you ever just bring your backside end or tackle over? EGCGTTE or TGCGTEE I heard you say you don't worry about anything on the backside.
I do exactly that coach. In 2013 mostly when I was a single formation team I would use two TAGS of ANGRY/UGLY to use tackle over. Angry would be heavy right. UGLY was heavy left. If they didn’t shift to my heavy side it was over. And I would automatically call off the two pullers on one side. I would pull JUST the BSG only.
I've seen my kids team get run over by this offense. I've also seen this offense completely fail under the same coaches when the talent left. I'd be very interested how this works against real HS defenses. But what a hard offense to stop when you have some talent.
Yessir. It’s not as In vogue anymore for most high schools because the nature of the pro game has changed and that has filtered down to college. Youth football you are sometimes still ridiculed for running this because it’s so run heavy kids don’t learn how to be receivers. QBs run and block versus being pocket passers. However if you run this at the HS level it can and IS very potent. Tim Murphy at Clayton valley in Concord CA has run this for about 6-8 years. And they play De La Salle every year. One of the top HS programs in California. And they always hold their own with tons of running yards. You won’t be popular from the parents of receivers. But you will be successful as it’s hard to stop when run correctly.
Yessir that is correct. My formations go from true UC DW to single wing shotgun variations. I find the wildcat approach at times makes your running offense very potent at this age level.
Good stuff, Coach! Question for you. If you had 43 trap called, and D is in a 5-3 with DTs lined up in 4is, how does that shake out? Rules would dictate that the OT blocks that 4i and you just end up trapping the end?
Yessir. The AT Man is ur 3 man now (LG) cuz the play is being run AT HIM so his blocking rule is GOOD. nobody in his gap. Nobody on him. But since the 4 tech is inside shade the guard would consider him as an “outside gap” defender and it would become his assignment. The LT is now gap, down, backer and since his man is inside shade he’d be considered in the gap and there would be a double team on him. When you are zero line splits the shades don’t matter as much bc if he even moves an inch over he’s technically in the gap. So yes the free runner would be the defensive end and he’d be kicked out by the pulling BSG.
Great stuff, Coach! One question I have is when you run counter, and you have the BSG kick out the free runner and the FB wrap around and get the guard (opposite assignments from what they do on power), what motivates that switch (instead of FB still kicking out and BSG wrapping around to get the backer). Would be tempted to play that the same on both power and counter from a simplicity standpoint. Do you do that bc you just want the FB taking a step away to help sell the counter?
Usually on counter my FB is offset on the opposite side of the counter. My guard takes NO counter step and pulls to KO the DE. the FB takes a slight counter step to sell power and then steps into the flow of pullers. So everyone gives each other space. Not a lot of space but enough so nobody crashing into each other. The order of flow towards the counter will be BSG-FB-BSTE-RUNNER. nice and orderly line. @ajhawkeye
Also on any counter cutback or XX criss cross counter I have my QB handle the KO. Then the flow becomes QB-BSG-FB-BSTE. QB goes to kickout and the other three flow into the called hole. The QB tosses to the runner then immediately attacks the DE on playside
@@ajwhawkeye of course Coach. It’s a great question. Making this offense run right requires as much space as you can gobble up going UPFIELD as the pullers pull into the lane. So to avoid crashing into each other I took a look at spacing and timing. And this setup flowed the best.
Really good question. One I found as my kids got older my TE’s were far more athletic than my tackles. And they could pull way faster than any tackle on my team. Also the “cut block” that lots of DW teams use to seal the b-c gap to cover for two pullers pulling I found I was occasionally getting high low penalties if my center had to block down. The ref can barely see but they were throwing flags for it consistently. The only plays I use crab blocking for now (making a coffee table in the hole) is my Trojan sweeps. I stress fast pulling and getting to the POA more than anything. My runners don’t slow down. I DEMAND the pullers get there prior to the runner. Also fwiw you will see a few different pulling techniques in this intro video bc it’s a mix of different seasons footage. Now I am 100% GATE pulling. The Gun 34 Power in the end is a good representation of how fast my BSTE pulls in front of the runner.
Yeah I corrected it in the video description. Undisciplined defenses abound in youth. But admittedly it’s hard to align to what I do. Even disciplined defenses have a hard time stopping this.
There aren’t many youth coaches with enough time to teach techniques on the D line. We’re talking about kids that are as young as 10 at times. Teaching them where to actually line up can be a challenge. DW teams setup counter by repetition of power/motion. They’re not chasing air. They are chasing what they “think they see”. Cause I’ve shown them power/motion one direction, then hit them with counter in the opposite direction.
@@coachb7373 you are correct, but I believe for a different reason than I believe. There are too many youth coaches who are focused on winning vs development. I've seen young people who get to high school "fundamentally sound!" However, you are correct in that most coaches won't take the time to teach.
@@ENDofREGULATION30 I agree with you. I stay on the offensive side of the ball so my role is teaching blocking assignments regardless of how the defense is aligned. But I see more and more unsound defensive alignments than probably anyone. However sometimes the defenses inability to do what they’re “supposed to do” comes back and bites me. Specifically on trap plays a defender isn’t where he is supposed to be bc he hasn’t been coached to be there in the backfield if he gets a free pass. Instead he just sits in the hole where I want to run. Had he done what he is supposed to do he’d be “trap-able”. 🤣
I don’t pull both guards except for on Trojan. And if u slant to strength and I run a counter it’s gonna be over. Reading the guards will help vs a DW team but at youth that’s a tough teach in all the scrum. I try to keep my wings, fb, and line low as possible to make it harder to read flow.
Yessir. Sometimes the THREAT of wedge. Is better than the actual wedge itself. I do the same thing with passing in a way. In warmups I make my kids line up in DTDW and I throw bombs. While the other team is watching. 🤣🤣🤣 not because I intend to throw deep. Just so THEY think I may. Lol
Exactly. You can simple it down to ur QBs ability and age. A designed keep is great. U see how my QB mostly keeps it too. Cuz the fake is what opens up the edge
Change your pitch relationship to be in front of the QB and use a basketball chest pass. Tell the Refs beforehand...because then it is a forward pass not a pitch.
Yeah my runners made a few decisions to take these outside usually bc of creeping blitzers. We worked on realizing where the hole ends up being. But at any rate all of these counters went for big yardage, so usually I’d let them decide where to target. If the C gap is clogged they have no choice but to bounce it outside.
I appreciate that sir!!! I’ll Be doing a lot more content to market my manual and playbook that I’ve been selling for a few years now. Email me for details if u haven’t already. And I appreciate the love!!!! DW FOR LIFE
Here it is!! My favorite block in Patriots history, given what the win meant (1 seed), who it was against (Dolphins), where it was located (Miami), the year it happened (2017 Champions [3 - 28]) AND who the player was that got absolutely floored; Tony Lippett. For some context Lippet was getting away with a LOT of calls that game and talking trash to Edelman about his lack of yards, so when Floyd came in with what I call THE HUMBLE I never felt more proud to be a Patriot.
Actually no. Normally my TE is responsible to reach block the DE. so he wouldn’t be doubled on the T and it would be a single cut. The wing on that side helps pin the DE inside. This example has the DE crashing inside so he makes the reach easy for the wing. Generally I try to keep my cut blocks one on one
And additionally Dave Cisars guide on defending the double wing talked about telling their kids if you get doubled die in the hole. Like make a pile but don’t get driven back. So if he does that on this play and the end crashes. It’s over.
The 6-2 is a more challenging defense to face but depending on alignment I STILL like power vs the 6-2. Wedge also does well bc there is no nose tackle. If the fb breaks the single layer of defense he can easily be off to the races. Another favorite of mine is counter trap versus the 6-2. Trap allows some penetration and with only 2 lbs the LB is effectively blocked when ur O linemen avoids the trapped DT and goes straight to the backer
Coach on your 25 counter wouldn't the PSTE Double with the PST (GDB rule.) You have him going backer and he has a down inside of him. Need that Double at point of attack!
In my playbook or on this video? Cause I didn’t draw out the 25 counter here but yes on 25 counter the PSTE would be GDB since he’s one man outside the At man. Depending on the alignment of the defense yes he’d be most likely doubling with the Tackle. The GDB rule just ensures he never blocks the DE. the DE MUST BE a free KO block by FB.
I guess more of my question is which 25 counter was I off on? I prolly misdrew it. But u are correct his blocking rule is GDB by rule. So if the first rule of gap doesn’t apply and his neighbor has a man ON they will combo block him. I like to have my double teams driving DTs into scraping lbs.
I wish I lived near you coach. The reason I don’t go to High school is cuz all the local schools here in Cali went spread. Even Tim Murphy switched. 🤦♂️
