Ruatoka Materua, a missionary from the Cook Islands accompanied English missionaries to Papua New Guinea (PNG) in 1872. The English missionaries depended on him for advise and interpretation of some of the local dialects which he had quickly learnt. Ruatoka also taught the locals christian songs and dances. These songs and the genre of singing is called "peroveta" in PNG and to this day, is largely practiced by members of the United Church (which originated from LMS) in almost all the coastal villages in the Central Province of PNG.
