crazy how the japanese version probably sounds more elegant or something to the people who can’t speak japanese, since so many people are saying the haikyuu dub is just “bad.” they’re crazy high schoolers. i was bored to hell with the subbed first season but was immediately drawn back in with the dub because they’re crazy high schoolers!! voiced by people who sound like crazy high schoolers!! “ew why did they say such a stupid thing” come on. as if high schoolers don’t call each other stupid insults. sure, there are a lot of va’s that stand above the others (namely bokuto, kageyama, akaashi, kenma, etc) but they’re not harvard graduates. they’re crazy teenagers and the dub is frankly one of the best dubs out there. and does wonders for my mental health and others. “I DIDN’T RUN AWAY! I DODGED IT!! GRACEFULLY!! BIG. DIFFERENCE!”
YYH is a classic! Yusuke and Aomine could be twins. They’re both bad boys who are good on the inside, extremely passionate about their talent, have a childhood lady friend who tries to keep them in check, say the most interesting things, and have an obnoxious rivalry with someone.
hearing dub for the first time did critical dmg on me 😭😭😭😭😭 not against VAs personally but after original jp, english dub is 'westernised' and it is literally missing the life of the characters in animes and games too (not just in hq). (and i say this as i am from a western country and i speak max a1 lvl jp)
I would argue that the haikyuu dub actually does wonders for the series. it’s about highschool volleyball. it’s not fair to make wide generalizations to all anime dubs, especially because the haikyuu dub actually makes them sound like the chaotic teenagers that they are! i get that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea to uh… watch things in a language they understand? but to say they destroyed the characters or something couldn’t be farther from the truth. especially with va’s like fukorodani where bokuto is absolutely chaotic vs akaashi’s quiet observant sarcasm. sure, there are moments that were hard to translate (namely the date tech chant and the oya oya from bokuto and kuroo) but really out of all of the animes i’ve watched, haikyuu definitely has one of the best dubs out there. TLDR: it’s okay if you don’t like it, but to say they did anything about the characterization, in my opinion, is the furthest from the truth and shows you only watched clips 😅
Couldn't have said it better myself. I watched it both subbed and dubbed, and I honestly like both. While the sub obviously fits more naturally, the dub really helps highlight that at the end of the day these are just dumb teen boys doing dumb teen things. With how serious the anime genre can be with all those internal monologues every five seconds, I think the dub improved that aspect and brought a more realistic side out of the characters. It's more lighthearted. @@veritsas
