Honestly if you manage to vacuum all the eggs fast enough, you will never really know because you would have solved the problem before they become a problem.
A group of us were camping 2 years ago off the 39 in asuza cyn and a crazy man was lurking and screaming at us all night. He actually walked into our camp after midnight. Things got a bit crazy but we were able to get him to leave us alone. We could hear him all night. Sheriff dept came next morning and informed us he's a mentally ill homeless man who bounces around campgrounds. Can pretty much guarantee that's who you unfortunately had a run in with.
The funny thing about socks is that the fleas seem to stay in them, so the one time I had fleas on the carpet in my room, I only had visible flea bites on my ankles, where the socks were.
