First-generation Somali immigrants have more issues to deal with than most. They have to be the keepers of the flame as far as passing on Somali traditions to the next generation. They have to be preservers of the culture of a land that has been destroyed. Also, they are living on a land they have no generational ties to and are a part of the culture that occupies both worlds. How do you navigate both worlds when you have no frame of reference? Why wouldn't someone want to escape this daily tightrope between worlds? The objective is not only to speak on addition but maybe even to navigate the road of pre-addiction and acknowledge the recognition of signs.

I'll be honest, I have so much respect for you guys to talk about this and to be so open about it. Its inspiration ofc for those who have been through it as its clear relatable and they can inshaAllah inspire to be like you guys, both look so fit & health Allahumabarik. Its also inspiring for those who have never been down that road because it shows the ups & downs of life, how much health and smaller issues we take for granted when people are facing an uphill battle of literally life or death. But to be honest, it makes me reflect on how much I respect us Somali diaspora or at least the 90's first gen of kids who were born/brought up in the West because honestly, with all the trials & indignities we went through, its literally a dark road where we didn't know where to go, at least now the younger generation can learn from our pitfalls, but we sincerely didn't know any better. Anyways, much respect to you guys wallahi. Minnesota Somalis may you continue to prosper and support one another and not be beguiled, but lead in all different ways. I'm saying this as a diaspora now residing in the motherland, but wishing all the best for my brothers & sisters in the West (btw that part about Maryam being recorded by two Somali goons was so jarring, and how ajnabis stepped in subhanallah it made me think dadkeena Somalinimo way illowayaan mar dhow, but inshaAllah khayr).

Thank you for creating Sobriety Sunday and showing people there is nothing to be ashamed and this is what we need to do so we can heal and overcome our addiction. I found your podcast and it guided me to Lamps of light project. I participated yesterday their online support group to overcome addiction. I have been using many drugs since I was a 12 years old. Now I am 37 years old and still addicted to opiate pain medication and I wanna quit using it or at least be able to take the medication way it has been prescribed to me. Now I use bigger doses everyday and if I stop using it I will get sick. Shukran for your effort and you are very brave talking about this issue showing your faces.

Thank you for this podcast. I have adhd, autism and ptsd. Not diagnosed officially but through long study of my own found out what is the reason or reasons why I am different I became muslim 2 years ago. I have had long struggle with addiction over 20 years. I used to love writing and language and was talented writer. I lost that skill after my last overdose. It did some damage to my brain. I have been reading writings of Said and first time I feel like I am not alone. Like someone describing my thoughts through words. Could relate so much writings of Said. Thank you for this podcast. I have been beating myself up for not being able to perfom like other people and there is a lot of expectations but on me these days and I have been in autistic burnout very long time. When I manage to get out of burnout I soon fall there again and that is why I still struggle with addiction. Not in the level that I was struggling before but it's still there. Self medicating . I tried to get diagnosis but I would have to go to private clinic and that will cost a lot of money. I live in Finland and our healthcare system is collapsing so it's impossible to get help as an adult. Even children don't get help or if they get that is because their parents fought for them many years. Now I have hope that I can overcome this challenge. It has been difficult to see that my disabilities are actually a blessing and not a curse but now I can see that. Allah created me this way Alhamdullilah

As salaamu alaikum. This information wouldn't have existed years ago. I'm totally impressed with the youth coming forward and taking about this important topic. I had 6 children of which two had drug addiction. One son, one daughter. It is very hard to navigate this problem inside of the Deen. There is little help, so much stigma and shame surrounding this, and hardly any help. Allah bless those Muslim Counselors who are coming forward with their services. Please keep talking about this and sharing where others can get HELP to stop. I'm totally impressed that Hawa was able to get out with her health in tact and didn't have to suffer other consequences. Alhumdullilah she went back to practicing and praying. This is the help of Allah. I am happy for you!
