Welcome to Land Rover Steve. I'm Steve, this is my channel about Land Rovery things if you hadn't guessed. Everything I do, I will try and record and upload here to help others.
I bought mine from eBay. Thats where I would look first. There are repair kits available if I remember correctly, but I opted for this as it was far easier.
My 2002 Freelander stopped moving forward today. It’s only going in reverse. Waiting for the tow truck to arrive. Later I’ll test the atf and fill if it needs to.
I would say, you have a bad injector....especially if it has been lying around for any length of time. I have a Kalahari also, had to remove drive-line and setup as 2 wheel drive. have to fit drop links and front brake pads ...but, underneath is in damn good nick for a 22 year old vehicle.
Good luck with it👍, I had to sell mine, 2005 facelift. It was the car that made me lose my sense of humour. It just never stayed fixed for a period of time. I was very kind to it, it just hated me.
Hi Steve, could you please share a link to this manual you're holding in your hand? I searched through all the internet and couldn;t find anything looking like that. Thanks - it's a great video.
Great video really enjoyed it another important one for me is to add tyres if all four are not the same ( tread depth and pattern ) budget for new ones and the spare if it is affordable as this will help the VCU last along with some of the other major components and always test each buttons on the dash etc and wait for such things as heated seats and heated windscreens (sometimes just part of them work) to warm up inc the spare fob to open and lock the doors see they all work inc the rear window in the rear door handle
This is quite an important video in my opinion. The hole serves three purposes , one to stop water coming in from underneath ,two to allow water to drain and most importantly, I think , it stops hot air from the engine being sucked in .Rather than the cooler outside air which will help keep the engine running at a moderate temperature. The IAT (Internal Air Temp) can climb to over 100 (f) degrees making the car think it's in the Sahara if you don't have that diaphragm in place. Personally i've just taped it up with duct tape and have NOT left a drain hole because I believe having water at the bottom of the airbox reproduces a rainy day when the engine always seems to run better. A sort of poor mans AdBlue . But I will monitor just to be sure.
Hi Steve, nice video & Kv6. When I had a KV6 when I did this, I used to attempt to ensure the auto gearbox fluid temperature was between 35 and 45 by the following ways. I once tried placing one of this thermometers with a skinny line wire and tip (it’s designed to measure temperature in food and liquids I think). I used to feed that line down in to the fluid pan until the small plastic tip makes contact with the fluid then precisely tells you the temperature - though once I was trying to pull it out and was pretty difficult due to coming in contact with solenoids and other components. Another way I tried was with a laser handheld temperature thermometer. I’d simply shoot a beam in through the level filler plug hole, if you look straight above from the top you can try aim the beam as close as possible to where the fluid is. These methods aren’t endorsed by anyone nor are they mentioned in RAVe, just a creative attempt at getting the temperature right. Btw I have a spare working Jatco gearbox and KV6 engine if anyone’s interested. Cheers from Australia
You've still got the rear muffler on- ditch it. The central resonator alone, with a straight pipe out to the rear isn't so loud to draw police notice, and if you really feel the need, add a 'Supertrapp' style diffuser on the end. I had what is supposed to be the best sounding V6 (Alfa), and the ol' Rover isn't too far off. Not Zakspeed Capri level, but worth the daily rip. : )
@@LandRoverSteve - the double tube front pipe and resonator sell together as a replacement part for reasonable money when they go, then it's just either bend a rear exit- or side exit for almost free.
Yes my 2004 HSE has an awfal sound system in, sub barely trys to work and all sound is the tweeters, I thought it may of had a wiring issue but after you saying about this issue I think all 4 of mine are blown.....
Hi Steve, my Freelander auto will occasionally drive in the Drive, 4, and 2 gears but is fine in gear 1 and reverse. Is this a clutch drum problem as you mentioned or do I need a simple oil change? The car has done 105,000 miles. 2004 registered.
Hey Benjamin That's a strange one. Have you got a friendly mechanic who could plug this in for you? It may be a solenoid or something that's failed. Not necessarily the end of the gearbox, gearbox oil changes can solve some issues, but I'm not sure if that's going to help you with your issue.
Shift solenoids; whole replacement sets are available and easy to install. If you can't find LR specific info, look for VW. The Jatco in Freelanders is almost the same as VW 09a autoboxes.
I've had my 2003 V6 for 15 years, driving it mostly during winter in one of the snowiest, saltiest places in the U.S.- it now has 112k miles. The paint/trim/interior/body quality and longevity are exceptionally good compared to it's Ford/Chevy/Toyota/Honda competitors. The chassis/suspension/steering are also excellent, although not so far above Toyota/Honda. The transmission is a Jatco J506, also used in VW/Jag/Mazda, etc.- it's perfectly serviceable for what it is; a light SUV/Van/Car transmission. Abuse it at your own risk and expense. The engine is problematic for many, but then again, not much worse than many other overtuned/overstressed/emissions abused late 90's designs. The cooling system is critical, but the Siemans EMS is excellent. Baby it, and drive it gently and knowledgeably and 150k is a reasonable lifespan, just as for the trans. The rest of the drivetrain is similar; sturdy and reliable enough for the light duty suburban SUV the Freelander really is, when cared for. It's NOT a miniature Disco or Landy- it's a more capable Honda CRV/VW Tiguan. We've used ours mostly for ski trips/daily winter driving in snow country/light duty trailer hauling, and the occasional heavier pull of hay/stock/vehicles in the summer months and it's been excellent to use and reliable in daily use. That being said, it was purchased with a 6 year gold plated warranty during which time Land Rover repaired/replaced all the damage and misuse it had suffered during its first three years as a dealer loaner/lease vehicle. A badly maintained or repaired Freelander is several disasters waiting to happen, and a misused one is as well, but the same must also be said for any of its competitors. One of its real and major advantages going forward is its relative simplicity of design and repair compared to what has come along in this category since. Even the engine itself is an easier rebuild than what has come after, and it seemed like a throwaway at the time. Back around 2010, when used dealer lots wouldn't touch them and their reputation was at low ebb, I bought another- an excellent running, completely rust free 2002 with 101k miles and a front wing crease. It's parked in the barn, waiting for #1 to reach critical rust through, but who knows how long that might take?
I'm glad you're enjoying what is a simple and brilliant 4x4. If you're looking after it as you say you are, and not doing anything extreme, she'll keep going and hopefully, keep you smiling behind the wheel!
There is a diaphragm you can buy and put in its place. I haven't yet done this as I've not had the time spare, and I want to make a video on it when I do.
Goodnight my bro right now I am working on one with no spark no injector pulse change crank sensor and Cam sensor still no spark or injector pulse so am asking for help don't if ecu or immobilizer thanks much
Good morning I'd highly recommend you jump into the KV6 owners group on Facebook. There is a wealth of knowledge there and some genuine Rover / MG enthusiasts who'll be able to help you with your issue. Sadly, I don't have the answer. Regards, Steve
www.mg-rover.org/forums/ I'd highly suggest this then - they seem very active still, with many forum sections which I'm sure you'll find the answer in.
Hello, thanks for the information. I have a TD4 sport, 110,000 miles and It has been suggested the Drive Solenoid may be faulty as the car does not pull in that gear. The car is in the Caribbean and I have also been told that it may need an oil change or a heavier oil to cope with the tropical temperatures. Any thoughts or ideas?
I'd suggest against the recommended oil. LR test all their vehicles in various environments. At most, a more frequent oil change may be the solution long term. But definitely have that fault looked into by a professional.
Hi I have 2007 lr freelander 2 up until last couple days everything was working perfect, now I start car drive few miles radio turns off then strate back in also the sound and big nav screen goes off and on same time l, any help would be greatful I haven’t changed any discs etc always had same one in
Hey Chris - Whilst its difficult to diagnose something like that without being around the vehicle, there are three things that might help resolve these problems. 1: Earth strap mod. Jump onto the FL2OG on Facebook. There's plenty of info on this, it involves running a new, seperate earth cable from the battery to the gearbox. 2: Check the condition of your original eath leading from your battery to your bulkhead. These can go corroded and cause all kinds of electrical issues. 3: Battery - probably the easiest to test if you have a friendly garage. I had mine tested at my local garage free of charge. This can cause all kinds of issues with eletricals, and also cause "transmission fault" symptoms too! If you're not the technically minded, a decent LR indi will be able to see you right with these issues. Good luck! Regards, Steve
Hey Mate, this exact things seem to me happening to my 2007 freelander 2 and I was just wondering if you managed to solve the problem? I've scoured the internet and this is the closest ive come to finding someone else experiencing the same issue. Thanks!
Hello; I have a rover 75 CDTI 2 liters, year 2005 and I want to drain the automatic gearbox which is the same as the Land Rover Freelander JATCO JF 506 E ... I bought the Oil from Rimmers Bross in England Can you give me the procedure of this emptying if you have it please I am in France thank you very much
Two things to add; 1. To simplify the process of getting the 'full' level right, I pulled the drain plug while cold and carefully measured what came out, then started the engine, adding (measured) fluid until the sump just began to drip. Go through all the gears, let it get full warm, then top up again. Do the math and you've got a cold sump/shortcut method of changing/level testing your ATF. 113,000 miles on my original box so far, even though a dealer filled it with plain Dexron III at 50k- I caught it within 500 miles thankfully. 2. Many of these will develop a buzzing, even when at proper level. I'm told this is due to a chronic fault with the fluid pickup/filter developing a crack, allowing it to starve. Somewhere between 1 and 2 extra pints of fluid eliminates the noise, and improves operation- again without problems in my experience. Cheers!
Interesting Floyd. I checked my level and I got like 2 liters. I take the Freelander for s short ride and I started listening a noise coming from the transmission. So I take back the extra oil into the Transmission and the noise stopped. This may sound familiar with what you mentioned above.?
