Do tv stations even have these anymore? Does anyone go off the air at night these days? Living in the NYC area, it’s not like I can tune in and find out. 😂😂
It's my voice, but I sure don't remember it. Yeah, I'm old..... I don't think it was produced for the final week of WNBC Radio. We weren't sure when the final week was going to happen and had only a couple of days notice after the transfer to Emmis was approved by the FCC. It may have been recorded in 1987 to promote the debut of the Weekend Time Machine. It sounds like one of the promos Jim Collins produced for the Time Machine using the pre-records from PAMS Series 33.
Thanks for this upload! Even though this was a tragic day, the broadcast gives those of us who grew up with radio, especially AM radio, as a source of information and entertainment for the mind, that “radio feeling” that newer generations will never experience or understand. I was 17 on this day, and walked into Biology II class hoping to catch some of the launch, only to see my teacher crying. Once I found out what had happened, I called my Mom at home, and she agreed to come take me out of school so I could watch the coverage at home, as she knew how I loved the Shuttle program…good ol’ Mom. We all end up longing for the simpler times of our youth, but we’ve become so detached and depersonalized by technology and the Internet that I wonder if we can ever recover our humanity, our lost empathy, and our ability to communicate face to face. Radio wasn’t face to face, but it was as close as one could come to that feeling. The mind filled in the details. Rest In Peace, Challenger crew (and US manned space program).
I was in a Pasadena theater when it happened and I didn't know about it until I got home and saw my mom watching it on TV. I heard that it was felt in los angeles too, but I didn't feel anything; the movie I had gone to see was shown late, but I never found out why. Maybe the staff at the theater felt it. The next day, my los angeles newspaper's headline was the exact quote from the newscaster covering the world series before the TV signal was lost; "We're having an earth...."
Thanx for Uploading this. I recall it, as I taped an episode on Reel to Reel audio only, so I don't have the Picture. It was the episode, with Hinge & Bracket in it. Thankfully, for those two geniuses, the Picture wasn't really essential. There aren't many copies of this series on the Net & a lot of Folk think it wasn't very good, which is a pity, as the Writers included ones who penned 'One Foot In The Grave' & M&W !! I actually found it very funny. It had an all-star cast too - including a couple of the Script-Writers, Cryer & Junkin !!! 👍🏻
So, this was an interesting program. I recorded this one night in 1982 from WOR-TV Channel 9 in New York City. It aired as a part of something called "Thames On 9" which ch9 basically became Thames Television. All prime-time programming (even all adverts) were brittish. What's On Next appeared in the TV Guide as something called "After Benny, Thames Presents..." (just as in the beginning of the program) so I thought it was more Benny Hill programming, since he was HUGE on ch9 at that time. As a 14 year old kid from the Bronx, I had never heard of any of the performers (with the exception of Bob Todd, who appeared on the Hill show regularly) but I found them all to be extremely funny. I watch this episode from time to time and still laugh till this day. I wish there were more of them available to watch.
I'm pleased that people from overseas are able to receive these shows & that despite the British-type humour, they still find it funny. I also wish that this sort of humour was around today. 🙂
@@antonyconnolly2738 Agreed, Most British television comedy didn't become popular until the late 80s - mid 90s or so, when programming began airing on PBS stations here in the US. Monty Python had an early lead in that regard, and it became very popular with students. I forgot to mention earlier, that 2 of my now favorite programs were also part of the "Thames on 9" format on WOR-TV. Bless This House with Sid James and a cut up syndicated version of the Morecambe & Wise specials. Also, living in an area that was not wired for cable, and MTV becomming extremely popular, we were able to watch music videos on The Kenny Everett Video Show, which aired on WNBC -TV right after Saturday Night Live. You may notice an ident card for this show briefly in the first second of this video. I used to record everything. :) Although it's easier now to watch these classics by buying the DVD box sets and getting a region free player LOL!
If they thought FEMAs response was horrible during hurricane Hugo....just waiting till hurricane Katrina....😢 Sylmar (Los Angeles) 1971, Whittier Narrows (Los Angeles) 1987, Loma Prieta (SF) 1989, Big Bear & Landers, 1992 Northridge (Los Angeles), 1994....
Thank you for posting this. I live in Pennsylvania and remember watching footage of the earthquake most of the night and the next day. Hard to believe it has been 33 years since then.
R.I.P. Jay Barbree. He covered every U.S. manned space launch for NBC, either on radio or TV, from Alan Shepard's suborbital flight in 1961 through the end of the space shuttle program.
There was some radio coverage. That was one way it spread quickly. I read a story recently of a weather forecaster who did radio plugs for their stations weather. An announcer was doing a live spot in the Knoxville, TN radio market when the man walked in the room and told the announcer and it was broadcast over the air.
What a case study in how warped and untrustworthy the controlled, mainstream corporate media is. Lie after liie after cover up after cover up after omission after omission. The daily bombardment of fake and distorted news has reached a climax with events in Ukraine. But the opening remarks from one of the leading media whores makes special mention of Christa McCauliff, like as though she was the only casualty that matteted. NASA, being an arm of the government and as such so predictably full of corruption and waste, that the masses should have realized that this was a massive colossal waste of money better needed right here on planet earth for healthcare and health and human services, used this woman as a propaganda stooge to try to dupe a tax paying public to continue to support this wasteful, bloated, and totally stupid and unnecessary and costly shuttle program . That was the first thing that proved how biased and full of shit the controlled, mainstream media truly is. THE second thing I heard out of this media mouthpiece's big mouth fly trap is how NASA had no clue as to how the explosion happened. It has since been revealed and proven beyond a doubt that NASA was warned by chief engineers that the O rings were not designed and would fail under tempetratures below like 50 degrees (forget actual temp, probably higher) but NASA wanted a savagely beaten tax paying public to keep forking out the money to fund this horse crap so went ahead and launched in those frigid cold temperatures anyways. That entire 're-usable' shuttle program was riddled with problems and not as cheap as the US military contractors lead us to believe, so that whole shuttle fiasco has been retired. So much for the myth of superior military engineering. Like the latest fighter jet, it is fraught with never ending problems and untold trillions of dollars later, still full of problems and defects, etc. Such a shame our government and the entire corporate mainstream media that they have taken great lengths to control continue to act like child molestors. Offering a naive US public candy, a ride in their car, etc (our weapons are the best, we still need to fund NASA or the latest fiasco/waste of hard earned tax money) on junk or crap that we don't need. And the US public buys it time and time again. How much longer will it take us to tell Uncle Sam, the child molestor, that we don't want his candy or to take a ride in his car!!??? Just say NO to their never ending oil wars and latest wealth draining defense budgets and the junk that has been raping the public purse. Wake up, people
