My parents and I had just moved to Houston, Texas in early 1972 from the NE. I still remember this story on the news in ‘73 and my parents being shocked their were still whorehouses in Texas! And of course everyone knew and watched Marvin Zindler, EYEWItness news for years and years until he retired! Look up ‘Slime in the Ice Machine!’ He coined that term. Much later as an adult, I worked with for years a secretary, good ole SouthernTexas Gal, who lived right next door to Marvin. The stories she would tell! I should have wrote them down! Thanks for the story! Well done!

In no way would $12,000 be equivalent to 17 million in today's currency. my inflation calculation values it at just over $185,000

No such thing as texas exists, the stolen land is called Teja's.

If by 'stolen,' you mean, after a revolution and a war, it was lawfully ceded to the United States by Treaty AND subsequently recognized by Mexico as a territory of the United States, then what you say only makes partial sense because the people breathed life into it when they started calling it 'Texas'
