FLOORS, FLOORS, FLOORS

Getting down and dirty into the best and worst of the flooring industry from a unique South African / Africa / Global context and having some fun along the way.

Quirky | Informative | Industry Focused

I, Barry Doveston (the main dude in the vlogs) have been in the flooring industry for over 15 years and started installing floors with no experience at all. Now its time to give back to the very industry that has supported me for so long.

I am trying to create a educational mobile phone learning platform specifically for the flooring industry and those wanting to enter it. Upliftment starts with knowledge.

This RU-vid channel is part and parcel to gain exposure for that cause and to share knowledge.

HELP ME PLEASE !

Good vlog, I remember in the 80’s my dad had this on his boat and I also remember the advert where a motorbike rode into the kitchen spilling oil which was easy to clean up, excellent quality product, kind regards to you chaps and everyone out there, Mark from Billericay in the U.K. 🇬🇧

What about removing dried in fat will this system work? Our flotex is old but still ok apart from where fat has been spilled.
@readrothbard153

Use a solvent based detergent on the spot or area. Combined with water around 140°F it will break down the fats and allow it to be easily removed. Rinse really well and extract to ensure detetgents aren't left behind, detergents attrct dirt by design so removing it is important.

Hey guys, very informative thanks. I'm wondering if there is any advice for me out there, I bought enough self adhesive vinyl planks to do my whole home here in New Zealand, our houses have chip/strand board wooden floors sealed with varnish or similar (1970's home), now that it comes time to install this product the installation instructions (only seen on their web site) says that it has to be installed on top of masonite/hard board underlay only otherwise the glue will likely fail... sadly I bought the product a year ago so no real option to return it (I would never have bought it if I knew this). The supplier doesn't even allow installation over existing wooden laminate as they say the glue will likely leach chemicals out of the old wood laminate floor & cause the glue to fail, same story if I were to go directly onto the original varnished strand/chip board floor. This sounds crazy to me that the glue is so sensitive & I wonder if they have another agenda here... (sell expensive underlay). Product is Gerflor Senso - www.bunnings.co.nz/senso-914-x-152-x-2mm-2-2m-rustic-white-pecan-self-adhesive-vinyl-plank-16-pack_p6610226 I would love to get your opinion on my risk if I don't afix it to the Masonite/hardboard & just use the existing floors?

Great video. I'd like to see the machine tackle a few plank flooring jobs. Some good old oregon pine flooring with some old Plascon Purecoat for example. I think that would really open up what this machine can do for the every day floor sander that is still going to be sanding non engineered floors 99 percent of the time. It will take a good few years for the norm to become sanding engineered wood even 50 percent of the time. So lets see some videos of sanding parquet and SA pine and Oregon and meranti and beech wood etc etc. To see the 40 grit and wire attachments tackle those sorts of jobs will be important for the large industry majority to see.

Great Video. A recommendation: when discussing the aspect of time/money… insert the word “Value” as often as you can. It’s not that bad patterns or installs are cheap… the value is less than desired, or what was paid for, or what was agreed upon. Businesses run on resources (time, money, effort) and value. Savings are derived from reputation where trust is the currency.

I just had 1,100 sf of vinyl plank floor laid in 50 or half offset and it looks awful! All I can see is H patterns with the floor print so busy and mis aligned on top of it… I absolutely hate it. Hired someone new to literally rip out a 2 week old brand new floor to replace with quality new one in a random pattern. 3 bedrooms and hallway done so far, 2 living rooms to go…. Biggest stress and $9k down the drain. Do your research. Don’t stagger waterfall, third offset, half offset. Random is a way to go.

I can so relate to this. Just had a new floor put down, and it's laid down real nicely plank-wise (in terms of the overlaps), but it is borderline impossible to avoid repeated patterns in the decor - there are like 3 maybe 4 max. different printed surfaces, and them some of them rotated 180 degrees. I need 3 planks per row and approx 30 rows, and a lot of the floor will not be covered when furniture has been installed, so the pattern repeats real easily, even if the installer tries to randomize it. The floor isn't cheap, mostly because of its acoustic abilities and resilience to wear and tear. But I simply can't wrap my head around why they don't have a couple of more unique prints, because as you say, it really cheapens the look of the floor. If the installer tries to make sure the same print of the planks are further apart, they just risk making a larger scale repeated pattern across the entire floor. Do you have any tips on this? Or should the number of unique prints just be a more highlighted part of the product specifications, along acoustic dampening, weight, material, thickness, etc.?

I’m looking for a slip resistant scratch resistant floor for the bathing area in my dog grooming parlor. I saw a video of the SPC’s anti slip capability. The floor is currently tile and we have to put several rubber mats down which means putting them down and picking them up every day. Would SPC that be the product solution?
